Dennis DeYoung (Formerly of Styx) - Talks About "Jesus Christ Superstar" and Live Performance -1993

Музыка

Hey kids !
Recently I was sent this very old VHS copy of a video where I performed the role of Pontus Pilate in Andy Webers’s Jesus Christ Superstar. It’s just my three songs. The quality isn’t great but it’s the only video that exists as far as I know. Didn’t know this existed. Wish you could see my facial expressions. I gave good Pilot. Still. Hope you dig it.
Cheers PP

I saw you as Pilate on tour, and being a huge fan of Styx, I was thrilled to see you. I later lived in NYC for several years and now consider myself a huge fan of Broadway. You, Irene, Ted, and Carl brought these characters down to earth and humanized them for me. I was so excited to find this video of you playing Pilate. It brought back wonderful memories. Thank you for bringing back such a dear memory for me.

Dennis, love you bro! You know what bothers me about the name of your page? That goofy thing in parentheses (formerly of Styx). I know. You know. We know. They stole your band from you and they keep up their ridiculous, ever changing narratives. Tommy is a very talented guy and JY is ok. But, we all know who walked away from the band. And we all know who was gracious enough to bring him back. Thank you for being who you are. You made that band and you’ve proven that by what you do and what they do. It sucks their arrogant attitudes prevent what could be a great reunion. But, I love this as I love everything you do.

Wife and I saw Dennis in this musical at The Alladin hotel in Las Vegas. He was, as you could expect, REALLY good. Only one Styx reference at the very end when the cast was taking a bow, they played few chords from "Come Sail Away" LOL, was GREAT!! His voice was unmistakable!

I love this Dennis! I would love if you did these for some of your other songs! Both from Styx, and your solo career! I always wanted to hangout with the musicians from back then (i was born in the 90's), and this almost fills the gap. Stay safe, and your loved ones as well! Keep sailing on 👊🏻

I was born in ‘72 and - apart from the Beatles - Styx and JC Superstar were two of my biggest influences. Kilroy Was Here expanded my vision for what a rock band could be, to the point that when I had my own band in the ‘90s we would hear countless comparisons to Paradise Theater and Styx (oddly, I hadn’t heard Paradise Theater yet). I was introduced to JC Superstar thru performing in a high school production, so was determined to see you perform in it years later at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. Agree that you redefined the role of PP. I hope you keep being true to your heart and your art, and if you get back out to LA after all this, I look forward to seeing & hearing you play again! Thank you for bringing your passion to all you do.

Saw Superstar back in the day at the Fox Theatre in St Louis only because of DDY -- a great show. Styx was my favorite band from the moment I discovered them as a kid in '82-'83 or so... too young to go see the Kilroy tour but I later saw Tommy with Damn Yankees, and JY with his band in some no-account bar... all great and significant to me... and finally got to see the complete and true Styx live at the opening date of the reunion tour in Cedar Rapids in what, '97? If only we could see the real Styx reunite again! I do love Tommy and JY, but there is no Styx without DDY. Thanks to Dennis for these videos, he seems so genuine. Hope to see you on tour at some date in the not so distant future...

I worked this event as wardrobe crew in El Paso, Tx - 1993. 4 days in the theater with the MOST AMAZING CAST EVER. Ted, Carl, and Dennis were all the most down to earth, kind, decent people to be around. I was in constant awe, being a long-time Styx fan, but you blew me away with this perfirmance. Ted took a ton of pictures of all of us together, took my address and promised to send copies when he got them developed (back in the stone age) but sadly, I never received them. I prayed they would at least make a soundtrack available of this cast, so I am so thankful to be able to hear the versions of these songs that have stayed in my head all these many years. Thank you so much for posting this, sir!! No one has, or will ever, sing it better. ❤

I saw the show at the Orpheum in San Francisco. One of the most memorable nights of my entire life. You probably don't remember the incident, but after the show, I was showing my date around the theater, which she had never been in before that night. Some fans were on stage, waiting to give you flowers. I saw you on stage and I called out to compliment you on your performance. You replied something like, "Thanks. Did you see me? I played Mary Magdalene..." Everybody cracked up. Thank you so much for the memory, and for this post. Rock on!!

Holy crap man. You’re a genius music and theater wise. Very few people have that richness in their voice that you have-a richness that I think is a strict musical theater style. I think theater in particular demands a certain richness, purity and emotion in a male voice especially, and you have that. It’s that richness and acting that makes performances such as Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd or Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables so powerful. I’m a sucker for theater so seeing you do it just touches a very special place in my heart. And it totally works with rock music! A Facebook group I’m part of I think voted Sgt. Peppers as the best Beatles album. This had me on the edge of my seat. Thank you so much for sharing!

Styx Paradise Theatre was set to be my first live concert. However, Tommy hurt his hand, if I remember correctly, and your show in Vancouver had to be cancelled. I was so heartbroken at the time, as a 12 year old kid. (Turned out my first live concert ended up being Elton John instead …. Not bad!!! lol But I still wanted it it be Styx.) When JC Superstar came to Vancouver and I heard you were Pilate, I was so excited. But you didn’t come to Vancouver with the show. It returned a few months later, I attended again, but you didn’t come that time either. (It was still a brilliant show, I loved it so much, but I wish you had come there with it.) I finally saw Styx live in the summer of 2019, and I am a longtime fan of Gowan as well, so I really enjoyed it too. But, I have still never seen a live performance by Dennis De Young to this day!

Yellow Submarine hat AND the EVIL FLYING GLOVES!!! EEK! Very cool to finally see/hear this- have always been curious about this period. Did they ask you to sing any differently for this production than what you'd been doing in your own career? Your voice changed during this time, it definitely got even more 'operatic' than it had been 'til that time. I think the other song you're trying to think of was "Sky Pilate". ;)

Was at this NY show at Paramount. LOVED your performance and was looking for a vid of the full show. Where is the rest beyond your 3 scenes?! Thanks, DD!

We listened to the album, sang into hairbrushes and performed in the basement to no one but our siblings! Would love to see you on the stage in JCSS

Saw the show at the Paramount n NYC but I think it was right after you took a header off the stage or something because we saw the understudy. He really worked that cape. We were pretty bummed though.
