Demonstrating the Hollowing Tool STABILIZER: wyomingwoodturner

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sam shows how he uses the STABILIZER designed and made byTrent Bosch. This hollowing assistant makes the chore of hollowing much more enjoyable. Used in conjunction with either Trent's 5/8" or 3/4" hollowing tools this device holds the bar securely at the correct angle and eliminates the need to use "excessive force" when hollowing.

    Excellent review Sam! The Trent Bosch hollowing stabilizer is an excellent tool. I haven't used any other hollowing setup, but I have to agree with you 100%. This tool will never leave my shop. ;-) Thanks for sharing!

    Great tool & review Sam, it's so like an extension of the human arm & I like how close to the piece you can stand......... No trailing framework hanging out over the length of the lathe getting in the way. Winner, winner !!! Regards ....... Geof (UK)

    That looks like a great setup. From what I see Trent has some great tools. The only one I own is his cheapest. The thin parting tool. LOL Best one I've ever had.

    It looks like one could turn the hollowing tool a little to achieve a negative rake for fine finishing cuts. Perhaps readjust the tool height as well to stay on the center line.I made my own hollowing tool using Lyle Jamison's design for inspiration. I adapted it to work on my Shopsmith. Mine is not as shiny as yours, but mine cost me less than $20 to build. Where there's a will, (and a very small budget), there's a way. I use my extension table to hold the tool while blowing out the shavings. I agree this is a very handy feature.

    Yes it is a life saver. I added it myself. You can buy an after market switch sold by powermatic that you must wire in. I also had to wire this in, which wasn't hard, but I just have a regular house switch with a toggle plate that fits over the switch box. Sam

    Sam ... This tool looks like it would be a good fit with Ron Brown's laser system. I like the simplicity of it ... I have used other hollowing systems that have base-plates, backrests, etc. Too much to fiddle with to hollow a piece the size of the one you were working on.

    I do sharpen them on my grinder. These cutters last a look time and are fairly inexpensive. But you could certainly hone them with a diamond hone. Sam

    Hello, do you know how much stability difference there is between the 3/4" vs the 5/8" system? I think I heard you say yours is 3/4".

  • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER

    @WYOMINGWOODTURNER

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes mine is the 3/4" I am not sure if I can answer your question since I don't have both systems. But it really all depends on the size of your lathe and the size of the hollow form. Sam

    Hello Sam. Im thinking of buying the trent bosch hollowing tool to make vases in green wood. One of the deciding factors is that given that the wall thickness is very finely controlled (with stabiliser or laser) and hence much more even, there is much less tendency to crack. Coulld you give me any thoughts on that if you have any experience.

    I have had the Trent Bosch stabilizer for years. It is excellent and I highly recommend it. However, using a laser is a deal changer. The only time I’ve gotten into trouble going through the wall is not using my laser. Anyway, I would not hesitate to get Trent stabilizer overall he makes excellent tools at a good price thanks, Sam.

    Looks like a really good tool...I'm looking at this compared to the "deep,hollowing tool" by Vermec....how do you finish the inside with tool?. Vermeer tool has accessories that fit on the tool that enables sanding in the tight vessel. How much is your tool?

  • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER

    @WYOMINGWOODTURNER

    7 жыл бұрын

    This tool costs $350 (US) I do not sand inside these vessels. Life is too short and no one can see inside or even touch past an inch. These openings are usually 3/4 inch once I get the insert into them. Sam

    Aloha Sam, I've been thinking of investing in one of these deep hollowing systems. Have you ever incurred a bad catch and if so was it catastrophic? Jeff

  • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER

    @WYOMINGWOODTURNER

    7 жыл бұрын

    No, nothing lose to catastrophic. I have had small catches that aren't bad. The tool prevents that from happening. I have found that you must raise up on the end of the tool handle which makes better contact where the tool rests on the stabilizer. That make it work really well. I love this tool. Sam

  • 7 жыл бұрын

    Mahalo Sam. I've been turning for about 18 years and I'd like to turn some deeper vessels. For me that's anything deeper than about 5". I live in Hawaii so it's kind of a black hole for artists and makes it difficult for me to attend any of the great seminars and symposiums held in the mainland. So you're my go to guy when I need a new idea or I have a problem that needs a solution. Thank you again for all you're hard work and excellent quality teaching videos. Jeff
