“The chorus to this song is actually something I’m accustomed to saying in interviews and conversations. It’s a bit of a motto for me. What it means is that I generally see people existing at a deficit. Neutral territory may sound more civil on paper, but is dangerous. People will ALWAYS fail. Some people fail small, and some big, but everyone fails. Depending on how much faith you allow yourself to freely give to others, even minor failures have the potential to give way to hardened cynicism. Meeting people with a sense of expected disappointment actually makes forgiveness easier. It turns Run-of-the-mill reliability into a surprisingly positive event. And it renders all means of dissappointment somewhat forgettable.
For me, thinking this way is a default. I don’t have to work on it. it’s just in my blood. Despite how bleak it sounds on the outside, I honestly believe it’s one of the ways by which I’ve survived many of life’s little disappointments without so much as a scratch. If you don’t think this way already, do yourself a favor: Expect very little from others. Learn to not be so affected.
