Democracy in the Muslim World | Moeed Pirzada | TEDxPIEAS
In his candid, no-holds-barred way, Dr. Moeed Pirzada brings to attention the fact that there are no proper democracies in the Muslim world, and speculates on why this is so; discussing freedom of speech, and lack of military intervention in state affairs, as fundamental tenets of a truly democratic state. He discusses how the golden ages of Islam have, not surprisingly, been ages in which Muslims were most democratic; the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (four of the most revered leaders of Islam), and 8th to 11th century, when Muslims were formulating new ideas and were at the cutting edge of science and modernity. He says that it is necessary for people to understand that religions are ideas that cannot be fossilized, and that the solution to the democratic disparity in Muslim countries lies within this realization.
Moeed Pirzada is a prominent political commentator, TV Anchor, columnist and influential blogger in Pakistan. He advises government and key public sector organizations on communication strategies and has worked with international organizations as consultant on issues related to policy and governance. He is currently Director of Governance & Policy Advisers (GAPA) and is Editor Strategic Affairs and lead Anchor for Dunya News, where he hosts his popular show:Tonight with Moeed Pirzada.

Which didn't happen till now
Once upon a time, The future of democracy in Pakistan'', was a topic of one of my exams, and i flunked this essay miserably. A few months later, I discovered error in the topic, which had misled me to think as if Pakistan were a democratic country already. Presumably, the Examiner had deliberately posed the question to the student; or he might have no idea about the political history or regimes in Pakistan etc., but one thing became crystal clear after that exam, democracy in Pakistan has always been engineered and controlled by the Army+political turncoats in real time, and the people tend to focus on future of democratic system in the country that wish has yet to become realize.

It is interesting history - A *Cabinet Mission came to India in 1946 in order to discuss the transfer of power from the British government to the Indian political leadership, with the aim of preserving India's unity* and granting its independence - it was a *joint India proposal* of Britain (although before 1947, India was already divided into multiple independent princely states as each state had its own currency, military and independent governmental system) joint India proposal that was offered when Nehru on behalf of Gandhi Jee rejected the prime offer proposed to Indian leadership. *That Mr. Jinnah accepted with exception to ensure minority rights in specific state i.e. in Muslim Majority State and Hindu Majority State rights of minorities in both ends should be ensured* As Nehru jee wanted to eat the whole pie, Cabinet Mission prime offer was rejected along with the lame excuses. -- Question is who refused that prime offer of Joint India initially that Britain offered ?? -- Picture is very much clear now Nehru ruled India just like a communist dictator for 17 years straight 1- Pakistan still part of Communist China and ready to give access to them so called "warm water" theory 2- The fact is till 1947 India was not "Joint India" in true sense -- already divided into multiple independent princely states -- India was not one nation before 1947 3- btw, *now the idea of socialist or leftist India of Nehru is in the hands of Capitalist, not Socialist - It is ready to fight on behalf of Capitalist and Imperialist US and UK against the interest of Socialist Communist Russia and China

@@appleoranges9772 true socialism never got implemented in any part of the world. It was always manipulated and had always been a toy in hands of Dictatorship. China started as a Communist but current China is a capitalist. Even India's economic condition improved after LPG reforms in 1990-91.

As a matter of fact capitalism is not fully implemented anywhere in the world either. Mecca of capitalism us has already adopted and borrowed socialist Norms such as their social security system itself. Without adopting socialist Norm us cannot move forward an inch

You are confused. People can make choice through democracy within a framework. International policy, economic policy e.t.c have very little to do with religion.

India is democracy. pak is not. Not a single pm has completed their full term in pak. govt is also controlled by army and isi.

Both scientific attitude and democracy require a unfettered right to question any reigning proposition or hypothesis. In fact , scientific method requires one to state propositions and hypotheses in a falsifiable manner. But Islam on the other hand requires unquestioned belief in its prophet and the book. There are countless essays, plays and even movies questioning Bible, the Jewish scriptures, the Hindu gods and epics, and the Buddhist monks. Take a look at the number of countries where apostasy is punishable by death. Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates and Yemen are the relevant countries. All of these countries, except Pakistan, allow for capital punishment against apostasy, while Pakistan imposes the death penalty for blasphemy - including a disbelief in God. The countries were assessed on the basis of the harshness of their penalties, the vagueness or precision of the offence, and the degree to which the blasphemy laws underpinned discrimination against some religious groups. In ranking by International Religious Freedom, top 10 spots were claimed by Islamic states. Pakistan and Egypt were among the countries found to be using blasphemy laws as a form of anti-minority oppression.

albania and malaysia are two decent examples. The issue is pretty much every muslim country has been subject to colonialism, thus it's hard to seperate the effects of the two.

I would rather start with "WHY", WHY do we need Western defined Democracy in Muslim World? Yes I am drawing boundaries between thoughts and philosophies of Western and Muslim world. Is Democracy the answer to every question and problem related to Poverty, Liberty , Modernization, Education, Freedom and other social issues? Answer this and then talk about Democracy in Muslim world. If None of the Muslim countries have better governance systems, that's because they are not implementing the Muslim governance system and not because Islam lacks a governance system. There is no real Democracy in most of the countries but a bunch of capitalists playing with the minds of people to achieve their capital. Stop being fooled and start thinking.

Identifying the problem of the Islamic Countries is only a starter... most of them have been stuck in the past glory of the religion since centuries. As a result most of the Islamic Countries are very underdeveloped on all counts as compared to the morden world. ( barring some exceptions who have achieved wealth and morden world amenities only due to natural resources accidently found with in their territory.😊) Escaping out of self imposed illusive religious Superiority Complex would not be easy for most of them. It would take decades if not centuries, if they start right now. I doubt they would be able to understand the problem in right perspective and try to improve rather realign their beliefs and thinking in near future. The other major problem with them is...they rely more on their religious preachers than their intellectual and intelligent people. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
