@DIETRICHART I would highly recommend Liquin Fine Detail. It will remain open for enough hours to do a Bill Alexander kind of session, but will help your painting dry faster than normal. If you want the session to remain open longer, add a little walnut or poppy oil to the mix, maybe about one eighth or so by volume vis-a-vis the medium. Poppy and walnut oils add their properties quite well, even in small proportions. Keep it a la prima if you use a lot of poppy oil Experiment! And enjoy!.

An excellent demonstration of the various Liquins' properties. While Liquins are not the only mediums I use, I would recommend them highly. .

@islandann The Liquins can be used for wet-on-wet techniques, but I won't argue about that. I'm interested in your medium-what kind of varnish and what kind of stand oil? There are a few different varnishes I'm familiar with, and there are three stand oils I've heard about-linseed, poppy, and walnut. I've heard heat bodied walnut oil can gel paint. Is that what you use? I'd be interested in making a gelling medium of my own. I like experimenting.

@islandann Why not trying combining the mediums, in different experiments? My main technique requires a good amount of open time, but I want the painting to dry a lot sooner than would be normal without alkyds. I like fine detailing and excellent blending. Liquin Fine Detail works great for that. I've worked out a number of mediums I can make that work fine too, in the same way, but LFD works great that way ready mixed. Impastos? I'm not greatly in favor of impasto painting for myself in oils.

I notice in the liquin original demo you use a brush but liquin light a pallette knife for scraping. Woudn't the oriiginal also be more translucent when scraped on rather than brushed on? Just curious. I've not used it (haven't even tried oil colors yet!)

If you use too much liquin the paint seems to be transparent , making it look more like a water color painting. Liquin is great though. Speeds the drying time dramatically.

@islandann AH! We are thinking of different techniques then.Yes, your medium would work excellently for alla prima painting. Personally, I find no problems with layers sticking when using Liquin, but I always modify my paints before applying them, as in mixing them with my medium before application. I know many authorities recommend little to no medium in oil painting, but I disagree. I think pigments differ too widely in their properties to expect them to work well with nothing added.

What are the drying gloss level differences between Liquin and Galkyd. Is Galkyd glossier ? Can layers of liquid and layers of retouch varnish be used ?

More importantly what is Liquin made from? Is it carcinogenic ?

i am still new so excuse my ignorance, but is he using too much medium or am i using FAR too little? do you need to use more liquin than something like linseed oil? i have only done 1 painting & i used linseed oil but it seemed like alot less than what he used.. but its been like 4-5days and its still wet, that's why im kinda looking for other mediums

Paul Flurry with linseed oil your paintings will be wet for years. Go 1x5 ratio. 1 ounce linseed oil 5ounce turps in a jar. Dries within hours

This guy has it wrong. Do not use so much liquin. Instead mix paint with linseed oil and small amount of liquin.

I so agree with you. I look at Dianne’s liquin tips and she uses at least 90% less liquin.
