Cliff, yes I have plenty of broken samples. I think it boils down to balancing strength vs toughness. I may be wrong about the 5160 but I have found lower carbon steel have been stronger(holding weight) than higher carbon steels. It is a fact that the exact same steel and blade tang shape will hold more weigh at 55rc than 60rc by a good bit. The more important benefit in impact resistance (spine whacking and over striking).

Andrew, have you been able to catch the failure before it is complete? You may want to check and try to take one of the high HRC blades almost to the point of failure and then check for micro-cracks at any high stress point (anything with multi-plane sharp intersection, corners, pivot holes, etc.). You can easily do this with penetrating fluids. This may be the cause of the premature failure.

That is the interesting thing, the strength of 5160 at 55 HRC is significantly lower than CPM-M2 at 60+ HRC, there is metallurgical data you can simply look up on that, plus the hardness test itself is a direct measure of strength in compression. If the blades are actually failing under a slow load with a lower break point yet the metallurgical data says they are stronger then something is fairly odd. Are the pictures available for viewing?
@CliffStamp12 жыл бұрын
Andrew, I appreciate the response. As you are doing a slow load, I can't see the mechanism for 5160 to test higher than M4, especially with a 5 HRC difference. Do you have pictures of the broken/damaged faces I would be curious to see the exact mechanism of the failure.
@KinfeTests112 жыл бұрын
I don't think I have any steel types other than 400c, elmax cpm 154, and cpmm4. I don't disagree with the books I think the stress or strain or whatever happens in a weight hang test is not directly related to the "strength" of a material.

That is the curious thing, it is a slow load so it has to be slow load failure. The only thing I can see happening is if you are pushing beyond the plastic region, i.e., the onset of damage, and stopping at a pure fracture point. Depending on the exact nature of the breaks it could be higher but the onset should not be. I would appreciate seeing the pictures if possible. Have you done a pure bend test on HT samples just to check the actual yield/uts points?
