DeMar DeRozan NBA’s clutch player on mental health: Being rich doesn’t mean you’re happy | The Pivot

With May being Mental Health Awareness month, The Pivot has had several guests focus on emotional wellbeing from Michael Beasley to Ryan Mundy to Solomon Thomas and more as Mental health remains stigmatized in sports today, but more and more athletes are beginning to break the silence surrounding it and change cultural perception.
In 2018, one NBA star released an emotion-filled tweet that created waves throughout the league, generating awareness of vulnerability while garnering support as the message and impact was felt far beyond the game. Ryan, Channing and Fred sit down with six-time NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan to talk about his mental health advocacy as well as his journey to the league. The 15-year veteran shares stories from his upbringing in Compton, California and reflects on defining moments from his career.
DeMar mentions the influence of figures like Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle in his life and talks about how he is driven to inspire the next generation as well and what kept him from giving up during the darkest times. The guys ask about his trade from the Raptors to the Spurs and he reflects on the difficulty of the move, his legacy after spending 9 years in Toronto and how he handled his father's passing while the NBA pressures continued to build. Many people consider him an NBA star and an all-time clutch player, but DeMar talks about the importance of sharing real stories and being seen as a human being, which he hopes to spotlight in his upcoming book Above the Noise.
DeMar touches on how a difficult environment growing up eventually caught up to him many years later by never coping with loss and how people always tend to believe ultimate highs don't come with ultimate lows. He speaks the truth about the place he comes from, and opens up to Ryan, Channing and Fred on mistruths and misconceptions sharing how Money and fame don't measure happiness but it's through experiences that strength is built and understanding is developed. Never giving up and always wanting to be a light of hope for his family, especially his children, DeMar continues to prove people wrong with his efforts off the court and teaching through conversation.
Only 4 teams left in the NBA postseason as the Eastern and Western Conference Finals jump off today. And our partners at Fanatics Sportsbook are giving away a VIP Experience for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Download the Fanatics Sportsbook app and opt-in, that's it. Entry 5/21/24-5/22/24. I appreciate his perspective on mental wellness. People may think that he's only targeting young black athletes what they don't realize he resonates with a 42 year old single mom of three adults as well. He's not only reaching young black men, he's reaching a middle-aged mother that is white. Thank you all for this podcast, to me 'The Pivot' is one of the best podcasts out there period. You have something for everyone whether it be sports, comedy, mental health, serious topics, hilarious conversations and banter, etc. so a great big thank you goes out to eat and every one of you from Ryan, Freddy and Chan to your crew who helps you put our all together. Prayers are going up for each of you to be Blessed and continue to be Blessed by the GOD HIMSELF. As I always say for myself and it goes for you guys as well, y'all are Blessed and highly favored by The And Only GOD ABOVE!!! GOD Bless each of you gentlemen in your continued success in this lifetime.

Amazing!!!! Thank you to the Pivot team and DeMar for breaking the stigma of mental health in the black community. Our parents didn’t have these conversations with us, not because they didn’t want to but because they didn’t know how. We all experience moments of crisis, it’s normal. It helps to know that others are experiencing circumstances similar to what you’re going thru. Another awesome episode!!!

It wasn’t til last year that I realized that i hid allot of my pain and I would run from my past and abuse certain thing to cope with pain. I was so afraid to just be myself and hide my story to the point where I hid my gifts. The pain that we experienced can be turned into joy. I didn’t realized it because I never spoke about it. It’s still pain there but there are solutions to. It. Man bro I respect you for your glory bro. It’s not a struggle Olympics, it’s a healing Olympics. Our pain can be some ones joy. Great interview, very deep conversation about mental health. Everyone is different some kids need more than the other, but if your parents never had that love or the hugs or kiss or the I love you then they don’t know how to forward that to their children, but when we know better we do better. Growing up we didn’t get any kisses, hugs or I love you, but I’m from a different era so it didn’t affect me because we were taken care of. Fed, clothed, taught etc… Mother & father were married & in the household. Father worked my Mother stayed home and raised five children. I broke the cycle for my daughter. She gets the I love you & the kisses & hugs even at the age of twenty-nine. It makes a difference to say those words to your children. Keep doing what you’re doing brother. But in reality I guess it did affect me because with my siblings we only hug during holidays or loss etc.. & even then it feels awkward.

WAAAY back in the day (maybe 2010?) Demar Derozan posted on Twitter Kendrick Lamar's Monster freestyle saying that he's next up. After that, Kendrick became my favorite artist. To think..I could've been an OV-HO if it wasn't for Derozan.
