The Deltics Napier engine: A triangle shaped internal combustion engine with pistons that fired and compressed into eachother as a triangle formation. All firing three seperate crankshafts around the outside of the engine. This was the most craziest most mind boggling most insane piece of two-stroke diesel engineering in the whole of diesel history.

That oil down the bodyside does not auger well for engine number 2 ! Good job they have two of them. 😮

You would probably have been better to stand further away. Just because you stand closer doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the best sound, as the auto sound gain on your device would lower the noise entering the microphone.

The better sound is when they are revving hard under load. I'm not such a fan of the booming noise they make when not loaded.

Very smooth startup. Not bad, I prefer an EMD 567 or 645. The 710’s aren’t bad either.

The best place to hear it was when they had been standing shut down on the buffers at the Cross, and they sent a plume of clag up to the roof.

Those Napier powerhouses...nothing like the copy-paste diesels we have here in America, to me here we have the same exact 5 or so diesel classes repainted in like 70 liveries, but that's just me

It’s similar here with the class 66 locos we imported from North America also - They dominate most freight/goods workings. 👍

Honestly this makes me sad! Its from a time when Britain had good engineering and produced such great machines! Like class 37svstill in active service nearly 70 years later. All this has gone

I agree with that one. I was never a fan of the deep two-stroke 'Warbling' sound on these. I couldn't say it was a nice noise. They sounded more like an air compressor for a bus or a coach than an engine. However I was fascinated by the way the whole Deltic engine was made and how it combusted as a triangle with three crankshafts around the edges of the engine. Completely round the bend with the whole physics of an internal combustion engine. I have no idea how terrible it was on burning oil and diesel. Or what common problems or wear and tear a 'Triangle' engine threw up.

What do you expect with an engine that fires as a Two Stroke Triangle?
