Delosperma Jewel of Desert 'Garnet' (Ice Plant) // Amazingly Bright, Drought Tolerant Perennials

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Come with us and look at these glowing Ice Plants (Delosperma) growing in one of the greenhouses here at Overdevest Nurseries. These succulents form low spreading mounds of bright, long blooming flowers. 'Garnet' is a wonderfully bright selection with yellow centers surrounded by white and reddish-purple petals. It is VERY IMPORTANT to plant them in well-drained soil, so if you have a rock garden, raised bed, gravel path, or rocky ledge, these plants will provide wonderful, easy care color that will flower and re-flower all season long.

    A child of mine showed up with a clump of this after school. Tried picking a flower and pulled some roots with it. Beautiful ground cover.

    Yes, absolutely stunning on a sunny day when all the flowers are open and showing off their glorious colors. And as you may have noticed here on our channel: studio.kzread.info/dron/gfi7rt7jLrh4Hg01wKScdw.htmlvideos or on our website: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Delosperma (where we list over 20 sorts) there's a tremendous selection - so it is very possible to achieve spreading carpets of dazzling color in gritty, very well-drained sunny sites. You might also be interested in viewing and sharing this video entitled: "As Fresh As A Daisy": kzread.info/dash/bejne/op2kz8WAo6qWlLw.html with your little one. In this video, David delves into the origin of the word "daisy" (days-eye) and talks about why (possibly) these flowers open in sun and close up at night or in the rain. Also, have you considered subscribing to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find out about the information as well. And, now that we have entered the main planting season (spring through late Fall) try to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, and that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, including many of these wonderful ice plants in all their amazing, dazzling colors. So be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there will be a steady stream of fresh shipments coming in weekly.

    What do you do after they stop flowering? Do you cut off the stems? Or just leave it alone to dry

    Most of us don't worry about the old flowers because usually they recede and the new ones push up through the carpet of foliage to take over and keep the color going. If they are in overly rich conditions the growth may be a bit too lush, and more open and sparse, and the old flowers might be a little unsightly for a brief period. So, perhaps they could be trimmed back with hedging shears, but most of the time there's no need to do any trimming! The main thing will be to make sure that the plants have REALLY SHARP DRAINAGE and LOTS OF SUN, and as you've probably noted above.... lean conditions, so there's no need for fertilizer! We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? Can I plant them indoor in a container by the window? I live in Chicago zone 5b. This is my first time buying them. I don’t have a lawn garden. I just love how colorful the flowers are. I just received mine in the mail.

    You could try. Make sure they get as much light as possible (they love the sun) and also be careful not to over water them. Might be a good idea to set the pot on a saucer or tray of pebbles to keep the base of the pot from getting too wet. Treat them almost like a cactus.

    So beautiful! I have red ones but their blooms are becoming less dense. How far apart are these supposed to be planted?

    Here's a link to our website with the details of this selection: grownbyoverdevest.com/plant/jewel-of-desert-garnet-ice-plant/. You will see that it has been bred to be nice and dense and compact with a spread of about 10" or so, so to get a carpet effect you would put them at about 12" centers.

    Most of our tags (that you see in the garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/) are preprinted by a tag manufacturer. The individual crops are marked in the nursery by a separate large white tag with the name and pertinent growing records written on with marker pens.

    How long does it take to spread if using as a ground cover?

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    @OverdevestNurseries

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not long at all! If you follow our instructions and plant them in a sharp draining, sunny site, they spread out quite quickly. So if you were to put them in at say 18" centers.... in about 2-3 growing seasons they will have made a carpet of foliage.

We prefer instead to make then available through a network of Garden Centers where you can see and pick them yourself…. and get on the spot guidance and LOCAL support from experienced experts. Most of these places are family owned outfits that know your area, know what does well, and are ready to help you with practical down to earth information that you could never get online. I really really wish you could define a gritty soil! Please!

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    3 жыл бұрын

    What I mean when I talk about a "gritty" soil is a soil that is predominantly made up of particles of stone, rock or larger grains of sand. Another way to describe it might be say that it is made up of smaller parts of gravel. The important part to mention is that when soils have very small or minute particles like a clay based soil, they have very little space for water to pass through between them and are therefore slow draining. Whereas a "gritty", sandy, rocky or gravel based soil will larger larger spaces between each particle and they therefore are free or fast draining and this is the type of soil that these types of Ice plants thrive in.
