advice given to me by carb engineers was the alfa romeo Dellorto DHLA carbs (with a letter next to the 40) as compared to the generic dellorto 40 dhla (with no letter near the 40), were specifically designed for particular engines and are not really transferable between alfa engines of difference capacity because of the way the carburettors were setup internally for perfromance and emmissions let alone different makes. The generic ones are the ones that can be tuned for any car.

I found this info too, but I did my reserch after I bought this carbs... Im doing everything hard way :( Delortos with letter after 40 are emmision carbs designed to work in combination with vacum advance on specific engine. They are harder to tune but people are using them so it can be done. I will try to tune them now when I have them and if I fail i will sell them and go with regular dellortos or webers.

@@rustyavenger1058 I am glad you did your research also and as you said those carburettors *(with letter) are specifically setup for a paticular capacity Alfa engine, so will not work well with another Alfa engine not designed for them of different capacity; the choke and progession hole system are specifically altered on these models. Which letter do you have after the 40 on your set? My fathers car is an old Alfa with twin cam 1800 cc engine and the original Dellortos on this engine are DHLA 40F. I have the same problem in that they are emission carbs and i am hesitant that if i port and polish the head and fit hotter cams and matching manifold then the current carburettors will not be suitable.

@@cbca6567 Mine carburetors are DHLA40H. I found few links when I was trying to find info about mine carbs. I think you will not have a problem in keeping your current carb setup. Maybe a little tweaking or in worst case some other jets. Difference between pre emission carbs and carbs with letter is in idle jet holder (air corrector). There is only one size of air corrector and you can't play with it as on pre emission carb. I don't have jets for my carb because ebay seller scamed me but I will order them and try to tune them for my car. People are using them for all kinds of applications and engines so it can be done. This is jet holder for emission carbs (with letters): www.dellorto.co.uk/shop/dellorto-car-carburettors-parts/parts/drla-parts/10738-dellorto-dhladrla-idle-jet-holder/ This is jet holder for pre- emission variation DHLAs (without letters): www.dellorto.co.uk/shop/dellorto-car-carburettors-parts/parts/jets-and-calibrated-parts/7850-dellorto-dhla-idle-jet-holder-emulsion-tube/ Few links which helped me: www.alfabb.com/threads/dellorto-dhla-40h-help.706050/ www.alfabb.com/threads/jetting-dellorto-dhla-40h-vs-dhla-40.671646/

@@rustyavenger1058 Thanks for the information. Your type H carbs are early to late 1980s fitted to the Alfetta and Alfa 75 cars. I have the Alfa inspection specs for those carbs fitted to those models as also shown in one of the alfabb articles you attached. However the early cars also differed in that the number of progression holes pre emission on Alfa Carbs was 2 or 3, whereas on the DHLA 40 F and G And H the progression holes are 5. I just saw after i wrote this your alfabb article stating the same. Yeah Dellorto carbs and Webers also are being used on all sorts of applications. pity the diaphram under the DHLA is plastic but they can get jets going up in tenths whereas webers can only get jets going up bt by 0.5 Anyhow best of luck with your Hillman Avenger. I also recommend the speedpro book by Des Hammill called "how to power tune weber and dellorto dcoe and dhla carburettors
