The Dell PowerEdge T420 is a tower server, which can be used as a desktop or rackmount server. Powered by dual Intel E5-2400 V1 & V2 series CPUs, this 12th Generation Dell server utilizes two LGA1356 sockets. The T420 is the next-gen to the Dell PowerEdge T410 workstation. This system has 12 DIMM slots running on DDR3 memory architecture. You can use two types of memory for your T420 server: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). The max installation is 384GB via (12 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz for ECC Registered Server Memory. With LRDIMMs, the max capacity is the exact same -384GB via (12 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800L 1600MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. One common question we hear a lot. Does 64GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory exist? No. It does not exist so 32GB DIMMs will be the max for ECC Reg. 64GB DDR3 LRDIMMs do exist. However, they will not work with the T420. As discussed, there are 2 CPUs. Each CPU supports three Memory Channels. There are two DIMM slots per memory channel. This is important for loading the system properly. The RAM channels are color-coded with white being the start of the channel. The best configuration for 2 CPUs would be 6 or 12 DIMMs for an even balance across the channels.
