Delineating the Intersection Between Two Civil 3D Surfaces

In today’s session we’ll explore a tool in Civil 3D called “Minimum Distance Between Surfaces”. This tool makes it easy to identify and delineate the intersection between two surfaces. (It does this by tracing the intersection as a 3D polyline.) In the recording I demonstrate how the tool can be used to help identify potential flood areas within a property boundary.
The inspiration for this session comes from Simon Noyola Rivero who posts a ton of valuable content on his KZread channel. You can find it here… / @simonnoyolarivero

I owe my C3D Knowledge to you JEFF! I slept, eat and woke up to your videos during those early days. Now when I am working and I run into issues I ask, "What would Jeff do?" I always find answers. I know the journey has only began but thank you Jeff!

Is it possible to create an assembly daylight that fills to existing grade where the filled in area drains to the road? Alternatively could this be done with grading groups? I tried entering a negative fill slope but no go.

I keep coming back to this video every now and then. And it's the same client that gets me coming back here to answer the age old question: how was that done again?

I just want to say thank you so very much for this information. I had to find a way to show on a Wetland Impact Map a line representing the OHW , Ordinary High Water Level of a 2 year event for a small creek adjacent to my design service road. This worked perfectly for that application to show the limit of this HEC-RAS data. I can't thank you enough and Autodesk for making Civil 3D powerful enough to make this all work. Best Regards, B-man

...this is so much simpler than what I do! I would run a volume surface between the two tin surfaces, then extract out the 0 elevation, and that would be my delineation. This will save me a few steps!

I would always use a user defined contour but would have to use more than one contour since the flood elevation changed from upstream a culvert to downstream. Great tip!

Thanks for the Video Jeff, Very informative as always. I first found Simon's Video and I got the idea but my Spanish is a bit rusty and Google suggested yours that was great. But the reason I was looking at "Intersecting Surfaces is I'd like to create a "Result" surface kind of like Paste one on top of each other but when Paste the Top surface takes predominance within the extends of it. I'd like the result surface to show only terrain with lower comparison levels(I am not sure if this make any sense ) If I use Paste command the surface that's on top tier take predominance, but my aim is at that Polyline of Intersection the next surface that has lower elevation points to show. Kind of like solids Intersect command ? Is it possible, or there is workaround way to do it? I have a design pad, that have Cut and Fill sections, The Civil Engineer design states that within the Cut area extra 1m would be excavated and replaced by EngFill, but in the Fill Area of the pad 2m Below NGL to be replaces by Engineering fill. I have Copy of FL surface lowered by1m, and NGL surface lowered by 2m. I want to combine them along that "Intersection Line" I created watching your video. The result surface will produce an Excavation Horizon that I will use to calculate EngFill volume. Thank to anyone that might help me? Thanks Nick

From Ribbon- Modify tab-Edit Geometry and select Stepped Offset or just type OFFSETFEATURE in command line.

ok. stepped offset, I guess I've only tried the regular offset in modify because it always errors that this object cannot be offset unless its 2D. Thank you. Since I've got ya, if I may ask you to educate me on one more thing..... Is there a way to select a point and inquire what point group it is in? It doesn't seem to be displayed anywhere in the properties, which surprises me. Thanks again for your time. Much appreciated.

You welcome! For more information about point (and any other object) you can use LIST command. If you select point and start LIST command you will see "Primary point group" of selected point.

Your awesome! I remember that command from way back in Map 2000 now, I guess I just had forgot about it. I model in TBC, so I don't use AutoCAD as much as I used to, mainly just to extract and export now. Very much appreciate your time good sir.

+Deyan Last one I promise! Would you happen to know how to show the GPS height of a point, not the elev. It shows the Lat and Long but not Height.... Been wondering this for a while and could really use it today. I have searched online a couple times, but haven't had any luck.... Kinda more of a survey question, but thought I've give it shot. Thanks again D!
