Deliberate overload of a tower crane

Ғылым және технология

What will happen when a 22.6 meters high tower crane with the torque switch deactivated is deliberately overloaded? Here is the answer! Presented by g-ACK AB in collaboration with Lyft & Byggmaskiner AB, Vätterbygdens Kran AB and Sven Jinert AB.

metal construction did manage the overload fine, even on an old crane like this , nice to se test like theese, it shows the redundancy built in.

First time I have seen a deliberate collapse of tower crane. It was worth time and expense by experts to see collapse. Load limits are there for a good reason... to prevent collapse. Had that happen with operator, he would have a scary 'ride' to bottom and then died. What is remarkable is how much over loaded it had to be before collapse. There is a large safety factor built in.

A apprentice at a firm i know was allowed to take the walkie talkie and give the crane driver the commands from a roof. The older guys said "Tell him to say (swedish fäll bomen) (Direct translation topple over but in normal translation lower the boom". The crane did infact topple over and the apprentice did not want to give the crane driver instructions for a few years after that :D

Pretty impressive, if that front leg hadn’t buckled, it might have stood back up after the block disconnected...

Lesson: Don’t try to lift twice as much as the load chart allows or disaster will ensue.

"Torque switch" is not a term that I'm familiar with but basically one of the limiting devices in a crane is a "trolley moment limit switch" which is what should stop the trolley from moving out carrying a load that is too heavy for the crane. The weight limit at the base of a crane will be higher than at the tip, so if you lift your max weight and trolley out and there isn't a trolley limit, then this happens. This is why limit tests must be performed by operators at the start of every shift, to ensure they are working properly. Thought this could be interesting for some.

Very sturdy crane. Add some more counterweights and youre good to go... (No, don't do that) But it was a really good crane anyway.

At the beginning it says the crane was manufactured in 1980, which would make it 40 years old at the time this video was taken. While I've seen cranes this old being operated, I believe manufacturers will usually say 25-35 years is the life expectancy of a tower crane. Also the older your crane gets, the more expensive it becomes for maintenance, and your overall capacity goes down, so it's kind of at that point where you'd want to retire it - in this case, in a dramatic (but entertaining) fashion.

Too many crane failures on youtube feature people setting the crane up on the side of the load and trying to lift it when the counter weights are also at the side of the load. Another thing I see alot of is 2 different cranes trying to lift a load off center of their gravity. And many showing this exact issue. Do crane operators not have say in what the cranes capabilities and limits? Because it sure seems like that.
