My parents used to see Del Shannon at the Hi-Lo Club in Battle Creek. They were all the same age. My Mom said everyone knew he was going to make something of himself because of his music.

Thanks, Jordan. I didn't know that Del Shannon was from Michigan and that he lived in Southfield. I grew up in Oak Park, which is next door to Southfield. He lived between 5 to 15 minutes from me, depending upon what part of Southfield he lived in.

I grew up in this era of music but did not know much about Del Shannon, other than his hit "Runaway". Your video has piqued my interest in him, thanks for sharing part of his story, and thank you, James, for the invaluable information you provided. Great job on this one, Jordan, look forward to more!

I need to clarify two points I think I messed up on, 1. Chuck (Del) and Shirley (Nash-1st wife), DID go to that movie theater in Coopersville as Del said in a few interviews, however I believe their actual 1st date was with his friends Sonny & Lee Marshall to the grand opening of the Fruitport Pavilion to see Frank Yankovic the famous accordion player as Shirley told me personally. Correction 2 is that I transferred “I’ll Be Lonley Tomorrow” from the acetate recording. I believe Steve Monohan had the original acetate records from the Bob Seger demos. I have a copy of the songs they co-wrote together, but I didn’t personally transfer those records to digital recording. Steve Monohan was the source for all the Del/Bob Seger details. My apologies, I just want to make sure I do my best to make sure everything is correct. I was pretty tired from the concert and from the weekend the day we shot the Michigan locations. That’s all I have, I loved Del and am grateful for all he did help inspire me, and my brothers to get into music. Also for all the early stories he told us of he and grandpa Bob Popenhagen’s days playing the honky tonks around Michigan in the late 1950’s and 1960. Thank you Jordan for all you do to keep the entertainment industry alive and remembered. Rock On.

my dad loved del shannon gene pitney and tommy roe, he'd play it on the 8track in the 65 Chevy impala convertible and say you know, he's from Coopersville don't you? he is a local legend 💖 so many don't realize how many truly great musicians came out of west Michigan while later on so many other places lay claim to them.

I remember, in the late 1980s, Del had a little of a comeback, when “Runaway” became a popular song used in TV and movies. I was (and still am) a fan of the old TV show “Crime Story” which used a revised version of the song that he sang (but I don’t know if he did the changes in the song?) as an opening theme. In my mind, the two songs “Runaway” and “I Fought the Law”, although recorded by two different artist who both passed in the saddest of circumstances , stand out in a class of their own!

Few people know that Del was the first American singer to record a Beatles song before the Beatles hit it big in America. I still have my 45 of Del singing "From Me to You>" It was a perfect song for Del to cover. Also, I think that "Runaway" is one of the iconic songs of rock and roll history.

I’d say come up to Flint Mi. Mark Farner of Grand Funk. Said it best” Michigan people do two things extremely well. Build cars and play guitars” Even now Greta Van Fleet is on one side of me,About 35 miles, west is Billy Strings and Detroit is 60 miles south.Alice Cooper,Iggy Pop,Ted Nugent,Bob Seger,MC 5, Brownsville Station in Ann Arbor.Oh I almost forgot. The whole Motown thing. Yet R&R Hall Of Fame is in Cleveland.😂😂
