Del McCoury Band's "Vincent Black Lightning" from BLUEGRASS UNDERGROUND
Музыка
Taped 333-feet below ground, deep inside Tennessee's Cumberland Caverns, this 12-part "musical adventure" series features both well-established and top emerging artists within the broad spectrum of Bluegrass, Jamgrass, Roots & Americana genres.
Band patriarch Del McCoury has impeccable traditional credentials, including an early-'60s stint with Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass, a 2010 National Heritage Fellowship, and 2011 induction into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. But the Grammy-winning singer/guitarist who personifies the "High Lonesome" sound also takes it to new frontiers playing with everyone from jam band Phish to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. As opry.com put it, McCoury has, "proven not to be a relic of bluegrass music's past, but an architect of its future."

Absolute legend and hands down one of the greatest smiles ever. I cannot hear Dels voice without seeing his smile and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

He's one of the most cheerful guys on the planet in my opinion.
They took a great song and knocked it out of the park. Bluegrass is all about talent and music and here it is 110%
Dells just such a gentlemen you have to love him. Always dressed to the nines. His high harmonies are top 3 in my book.
I'm a huge Richard Thompson fan - and this song is one of my favs - but Del McCoury puts his heart into it, and how can you not like that? I like it!
I think it's very cool that Del and his boys decided to cover this. Del just owns it.

Saw the band perform the same song last Saturday in Dallas. What a treasure indeed. I am so very glad Del McCoury is still with us. He is gracious, humble and incredibly talented. Just a good ole’ country lad.

Yes! Saw him at n Chicago a few weeks ago and at 84 YO was fantastic!
Billy Strings brought me here.
Hearing this song..I will never forget being with my dear old Dad and seeing Del McCoury play this song, and the many times we were together here in Ol Kentucky.....I love you, and miss you Dad, see you across the River ..We'll rest under the shade of a hickory tree together again..❤
These musicians, in my humble opinion, are the best bluegrass ensemble that we have presently. The perfect combination of rebel spirit and bluegrass - this is as fine as it gets!
Just shy of sacred, is this ballad. Thank you Del and crew!
Del isn't afraid to take songs from other genres and give them the Bluegrass treatment. That's why he's the trendsetter in the field. Absolutely inspiring.
10 years later and I watched these boys rip this song just as good as then, 84 YO and sharp as a tack.
Happy Easter Monday 2024. 🆘.

I’m a gigantic fan of Richard Thompson. I play his music on my own guitar. This may be my favorite version of this classic. I’m just blown away.
It gets no better than this. As David Grisman said Del McCoury is an American treasure !!!
Nothing in this world like a 52 Vincent and Del
Great song! Reminds me of a dear friend of mine who was a banjo player and a motorcycle rider too! RIP R.L. Johnson!
I can't stop listening to this. Perfect bluegrass.
vincents were wicked, 125 mph right out of the box way back in the late 40s and early 50s. i met dell in blue hill maine and i told him his music went to my soul, well he shuffled and move his feet and his wife said thanks, just a good down to earth man, i love him , humble as can be, what a wondreful preson
Love it when Dales son leans over to give him words to the next verse he forgot.Good Son lol
Del McCoury is my favorite bluegrass Sanger of all time. His voice is world class. Love his hair do too.

William Liese ~ That's CLUELESS. The song "needs" to be whatever the creator and original artist of this song decides it needs to be. OR didn't you know that person was Richard Thompson? His was not a "version" of the song. His "version" was the song as it was ORIGINALLY written and intended.

Weirdly, there's a gazillion covers of this song by US artists, and I've not yet found one cover by a British artist, even though it's an English song about an English motorbike in England. Also check out Sean Rowe's superb version on KZread. There are so many good versions, but Sean Rowe's is my current favourite. Love this one too. Love that violin.

Jarred Stancil sorry in the name of Marybeth Bowman, I apologize
Woooowwwww! One of my favorite songs, sung by one of my favorite bands. Had no idea they covered this Richard Thompson gem. That last verse is worth the price of admission, "Angels on Ariels, leather and chrome." Speaking of the price of admission, Del was in a generous mood tonight--he gave them four verses for the price of three;-)
Seen this N person yrs ago. Don't care for the music, however, like history. Thank U Again 4 sharing. As Always.
Richard Thompson sure got a chunk of change from these boys. And they made a big hit out of it as well. It's a great story about a fine motor bike (" a girl would feel special on any such like"). Knoxville is the right place to go on a '52 Vincent, I might add. Just an awesome song, fellows. My hat's off to you.
Del and the boys are a national treasure.
Great tribute to Richard Thompson's classic ballad. A little bit on the rough side but a heartfelt and genuine performance by Del and the band.

I would have loved to have seen Richard Thompson's reaction upon hearing this. He's as deep a scholar of American traditional as he is of Celtic traditional styles and I'd imagine that Del covering him must have put a smile on his face.

I just listened to a podcast that interviews songwriters (songcraft) and he was featured and he did mention this version of the song. That is what brought me to this video. He also did mention the change of lyrics/towns. Not in a negative way.

Great version, applause well deserved. I did wonder how he was going to manage that 'Box Hill' line - did it well. South of London, there's a long chalk escarpment, of which Box Hill is one of the highest points. If you wanted to get out of the smoke and grime for a while, it made a pretty nice day out, a few hours in the country and still back home in good time. A popular run for bikers, especially if you started early for breakfast at the Ace of Spades café.

Del knows a good song when he hears it
Yes, have followed Richard Thompson for years, the best of Brit singer/songwriting guitarists. He owns the song with emotion but have to say it suits the bluegrass treatment that Del gives it, fronting great musicians.

Box Hill was part of the cycle-racing route for the 2012 London Olympics, and you might find some footage from that. There have been times when I have thought other aspects of the song are a bit too American, but it works, either placename.

Yep, Del sings "Knoxville" instead of "Box Hill" - that's a VERY different place, and not a town in England, as Del says - Box Hill is just that - a hill, in Surrey, U.K -but it's the home of the famous biker's cafe, "Rykas". And Del.... it's "Beezers" (as in B.S.A motorcycles) NOT "Breezers"!!!!
