I think the true brilliance of this scene is because you know the chandelier's going to break, you just assume it's because their plan for catching it can't possibly work. Then it turns out to an even more spectacular failure than you thought.

A German here. There other week, I took an excursion through the Houses of Parliament, and the guide led us to the great chandelier, where she told us a funny story of how a five year-old boy once ran up to her and yelled, "Oh no, this is just like in Only Fools And Horses!" Finally, I understand what he meant.

you know, the director of this episode threaten Nicholas Lyndhurst with a sacking if he laughed during this scene, as they could only do it once as it cost £6,000 to build the chandelier that falls. when it did fall, all the cast and crew struggled to keep their mouth shut, the director had to stuff a hankiecheif in his mouth and leave the room cause he couldn't contain his laughter.

The thing I love about Only Fools is that it takes it's time. I feel like most comedy shows have a premise, and it's littered with various little jokes. Only Fools, the premise IS the joke, or it at least leads up to a dramatic punchline. It spends the entire 30 minutes building up to the joke, and as a result, the payoffs like nothing else in comedy.

Genuinely nice guy as well. My old next door neighbour used to work for YTV on the Frost series. Every year he used to have a BBQ/Party in his garden. All the street used to turn up with assorted YTV people. David Jason used to turn up, totally down to earth and a pleasure to talk to, utterly unaffected by his massive stardom. Just like you'd hope he would be.

During the whole episode, you only see one Chandelier. They are talking about it as though there are more than one, but we do not know how many. The first time that you see the second Chandelier, is when it drops, and they are expecting the first one to come down. Cleaning the Chandeliers with Windolene, and Super Glue indeed, until they can afford the proper equipment.

They had one take to get this scene and only one prop chandelier which cost production a lot of money. You can tell by their faces that they were trying desperately not to laugh, and then ruin the scene...British humour at its bests, and a comedic piece that will live forever as one of the greats!!!

+Rory Mckernan They were told by the director (I think it was Ray Butt), that if they laughed, they would be fired. Laughing would mean losing the end scene, which would lose the episode, and subsequently, the series. The BBC would only transmit six episodes a series at the time. Also, the prop chandelier which was broken ended up costing more than the original chandelier, so they had something like five cameras recording the shatter from all angles.

+RoswelliVideos Ha ha wow. When Uncle Albert is gasping at Rodney in Rodney come home, David Jason nearly laughs but manages to hold it in. Also the Wendy House joke made David Jason laugh i mean he actually burst out laughing and then they stopped recording because everyone was in stitches even the camera crew and John Sullivan and Ray Butt were laughing because Lennard Pearce made it up, it wasnt even in the script.

+RoswelliVideos I saw that interview and I've heard that claim repeated several times. But I don't get it. Surely it's only important they do not laugh for the couple of seconds imminently before and as the chandelier is falling. As soon as it hits the ground and settles, it cuts to a close-up of the chandelier. If they messed up the dialogue at any time after the chandelier hit the floor, they could simply climb up the ladders and re-take as many times as they liked.

  • @spencerbrooks5311

+Karl Peart Yes, I get that you can only smash the chandelier once. But if they messed up after it hit the ground, you could just retake the dialogue and join it up with the footage of the chandelier falling later. The shot would be ruined IF and ONLY IF they laughed AS the chandelier actually fell. they didn't have to do the entire scene without mistakes, that's what I'm getting at.
