Defying Gravity (Rachel Tucker performing on "Dancing on Ice')
Ойын-сауық
Rachel Tucker (current UK Elphaba) performing the showstopper, 'Defying Gravity', on ITV1's 'Dancing on Ice' 2011. Obviously, she is accompanied by ice skating which is obviously unusual (and slightly weird if you ask me!) but nether the less, a spectacular performance of a song rarely performed on TV.

I feel quite sorry for Elphaba because she got into costume and got the broom, singing her heart out but the main focus was on the dancers which was a bit annoying but she was brilliant

Its because the fucking show is literally Dancing on Ice
For me Rachel did an amazing job at playing Elphaba. I don't think she is given enough credit. That performance was wickedly amazing!
singing this song in front of people who are only interesting in the dance must be helping. "Listen to me people, I am defying gravity, and if you won't listen, it won't stop me, I will do the best performance of this song"
I am very nervous of going to the theatre due to autism, but so badly want to see this musical that I am learning step by step to cope! One KZread video at a time!

Amy Simmons I took my son to see this a few years ago he is on the autistic spectrum. He loved it but he does love loud music. Not so much loud noises though. Maybe if you contact the theatre they may have a visual story about the production to help you. We just got one for Matilda that helped.

It seems I have matured since I wrote that comment! I have since agreed to watching The Bodyguard and, if I cope, Wicked. The AV has a guide but this is only a generic 'what to expect at a theatre'. Before, I couldn't look at an image of Elphaba without a sense of dread but now I am much less afraid. I am not confident yet but my aim is December for my sojourn to Oz! Ironic, really, two Fridays time... I will be on stage, singing Defying Gravity in my second language (British Sign Language), possibly as Elphaba! So glad your lad enjoyed Wicked! If I can cope with feeling trapped, how I feel in theatres etc. I'm sure a Wicked shouldn't be much bother! I know there are loud sounds such as the wizard's voice, The line (sorry for the spelling) "Fiyaro" at the beginning of one song, but I feel these days like I am very much fighting a winning battle! Thank you for replying!

Paris Newsam Thank you! Coincidentally, tonight of all nights I will set foot in a theatre for the first time (to see The Bodyguard) since I became ill! Once there is a definite possibility to see Wicked (no longer in December, I will need to wait for the tour), I will ask you for your advice if you wouldn't mind, once I am sure what advice I need (for example, currently I am unsure quite what I will want to know in advance). Again, thank you, all support means so much. This is my journey (cliché word but it does feel like a journey) and no one else's, as I can't imagine anyone else would be in my position, for most people it is a simple matter of booking tickets, money willing, and visiting the AV, but it is good to know I have at least company :)

In NYC, the Broadway community now does a Broadway Autism friendly performance few times a year. they tone down lighting and sound cues to make it less scary.
she's amazing
Holy friggin crap! That was amazing!!! She's an amazing Elphaba obviously, but I was amazed by the ice skating (which I've never really watched and know pretty much nothing about) but it all flowed together beautifully and I actually thought the song and the skating complimented each other really well. Just my opinion of course lol. I also think it's great that they had her there at all since Musical Theatre artists don't get nearly as much of a spotlight as they should on tv.
Damn! she's good. now if we can only cut off those applause to the skaters it will be so awesome.
What starts out sounding a little shaky ends up being, before long, an absolutely stellar performance. Fantastic.

+JonSingsBway sadly no its not she was off key at the end and the powerfulness of the lyric "so if yo care to find me look to the western sky " was NOT there idina menzel and kerry ellis both do the song justice sorry but Rachel doesn't

MusicCrew41 I will kindly disagree with you, but what I mean was is that it's starts off shaky because Ephaba is afraid but as the song goes on she becomes more confident and passionate and embraces her power.
Rachel was Elphaba when I saw Wicked. I've got the OST with the American stars and I've heard others sing it but I still think she sings this song best of all of them and so will always be the best Elphaba to me.

Still remember watching this live & how mesmerised I was... Was determined to see Rachel & this show from then... Well 19 shows later, 7 different Elphabas, 5 times seeing/ meeting Rachel, she remains my most fav green girl, she was born to play this role! This performance also included three of my favourite things... Rachel Tucker, Wicked & Figure Skating! Still gives me goosebumps now, 4 & a bit years later! :)
Wicked was totally amazing and worth every penny that I spent on the tickets.
I really love her voice...so pure and not "nasal"

“Nasal” - that’s exactly what I dislike about IM’s version and why I feel this one feels just ... so much more lovely.
I remember watching this on tv when it was on and just was amazed!
Outstanding!! I missed this on TV but I saw Rachel Tucker performing at the Apollo Theatre a few years ago and was hooked after she sang Defying Gravity alongside Louise Dearman. Truly breathtaking. Plus she's the hottest Witch ever!!!
Two of my loves - Wicked and ice - skating
Omg figure skating and Wicked in one video, my life is complete now!!!
I was so confused on who the crowd was cheering for Rachel or the dancers.

Hard to tell. I would say both, because that flying ending was awesome. Perfect dance representation of the song's climax.
Wow! I was not expecting that finale!
You wander off watching other Elphabas, but every now and then you return and are reminded about the incredibleness of Rachel Tucker’s Elphaba of 2010-2011. That is the sort of singing + acting that is unmatched. In the theatre she was captivating, enthralling… just commanded the performance space like nobody else. The flying sequence was magical in a way that I haven’t quite seen it done. The way she ‘levitated’ while blowing this song out of the depths of her soul was breathtaking.
Never thought that I would ever really like anyone other than Idina singing this but this is nice. The skaters and Elphaba singing go well together. But wouldn't it have been great if the skaters could have also been in some kind of Elphaba and Fiyero costumes and makeup? That would have made this really great. However while Idina remains my favourite I do like this singer. She does this really well. Great voice. Great performance. Magic.

The best Elphaba ever❤️❤️
There’s something about the way she delivers the line “ to those who ground me take a message back from me” sends chills down my spine
I still can't stop watching this 2016 I so badly want to see wicked again in thetre
I was so happy to see her on Valentine's night 2016. Her voice was, is wow, amazing. She gave me goosebumps. Rachel Tucker best voice.
Favorite Elphaba of all time, saw her live in London and was seriously so impressed by her.
This is the performance I always come back to. She BECOMES Elphaba...
Nothing can beat her live defying gravity she lifted me off my seat, I was speechless!!

I can watch this video all day. Rachel is awesome and I've never seen a dance routine finale quite like that!
I love you elphaba so much
I'm seeing Rachel Tucker as Elphaba in less than a month, I'm so excited!!!! She's my favourite Elphaba ever with incredible, unbeatable talent :) Xx

are you seeing her final?
I was so ever lucky to have seen her live as Elphaba in London. What a blessing. 'Til there the musical didn't resonate with me and I didn't know quite why, I finally understood Defying Gravity when she sang it. I'll never forget it.
I literally just got super emotional over this!! Rachel Tucker has been my favourite to see!!
I’m so upsessed with Rachel Tucker love her so much one of my favorites Elfabas she is so so so so beautiful like e she has a great voice love her so so so so so so so much❤️💚
Forget the skaters....it's all about Rachel Tucker and doing exactly what she does best !!!
about two years since i watched Wicked and im still in owe by Rachel Tucker. Unforgettable/
she is truely breathtaking there will never be another one like her
when the ice skaters started flying i was like what? lol that's so weird. great performance by Rachel tho, as always haha.
One of the Dancing on Ice producers decided it would be a good idea to have some great lifts performed to the accompaniment of Defying Gravity in the background. They made the mistake of getting Rachel to perform the song, as of course she stole the show. In this performance she is totally convincing as the feisty, defiant independent Elphaba. Nobody in all of Oz, no wizard that there is or was, is ever going to bring Rachel Tucker down. This was just one of those performances that we should all be appreciate as truly epic.
she is amazing omg
I can't actually cope with how utterly breathtaking that was.
I saw her perform this back in April!! Brilliant!!
I literally cried seeing this live... this woman has the most incredible voice i've ever heard =O
wow! gave me goosebumps, she is such a talented performer and an outstanding singer! so proud because shes from NI and so i am x
This clips does not do this woman justice. She sounds amazing here but live she is spectacular and jaw dropping. I saw 'Wicked' on Tuesday and was blown away. I'll give credit to anyone who can sing this song because it's not an easy one to belt out.
im crying bc this is my mums bff and we got to go backstage after seeing this show in london, best experience ever
holy crap! how scary it must have been the first time the skaters flew up into the air
I love this musical. I've seen it once, definitely want to see it again.
This is two amazing things combined- Rachel Tucker singing defying gravity and a skating routine including loads of cool lifts and a bit of flight at the end. Normally on Dancing on Ice I feel disappointed that they show a lot of the singers rather than the skaters in these routines, but Rachel Tucker's worth it.
like how perfect is she seen her once id see her again
Rachel ur AMAZING!
Saw her last sat. She's AMAZING! she's really come on leaps and bounds
Freaking AWESOME Elphaba! WOW!
360p left for this masterpiece, f*ck KZread!
THIS. IS. PERFECTION.
Man, that girl can blow. I have only heard the originals, but I love her voice.
oh cool such a nice performance from rachel so nice OH MY GOD THEY'RE FLYING!!!11!11
people complaining about rachel 'not being noticed' or the audience were 'just clapping the skaters' at the end of the day this is an ice skating comp and thats what the audience went to see. It most likely most of the audience havent seen Wicked or heard who rachel tucker is (its only the fact im a wicked obsessive that brought me to this video). Having such a powerful west end song and star was probably only there to balance out and make the skating moves look and feel better for the audience
Omg, I'm in love with her accent! Where is she from? Plus, she makes an awesome Elphaba!!!

Goosebumps.
OMG! ... just... wow!
Love Rachel!!
Rachel is an amazing singer!
Saw Rachel last night in wicked she was amazing
I think that she performed wonderfully in this, as it is very hard to perform at your best, when you know that people aren't necessarily watching you, especially with such an intense song.
I think this is perfect! In a way, it goes together!
YES!
Omg.....Rachael was AMAZING.:)
When the skaters went flying that caught me off guard! And AMAZING VOICE!
awsome
wonderful prestation congratulations to the ice skaters and the fabulous singer =)
LOL I didn't understand what you meant by "flying around like nutters", until I watched the video, HAHAHAHA (I always read comments first before watching)
I did not see that ending coming!!!
Rachel Tucker
Rachel Tucker just might be my new favorite theatre girl

this music I really love it is the cute one
Where was she hiding that broom...
wow. i wish i could sing like that
this one does rock ok I do
@nicolelovesrice well this is an ice skating show... so it makes sense that they show the ice skaters...
I am assuming there are cords attached to them somewhere, but I can't see them which shows just how professional this is :)
I really want to fly around in a harness or something like that tho because lets be serious it looks pretty fun
The skating performance was nothing compared to the actual show, Rachel Tucker is the real star
I find it annoying how they got people skating, nobody is paying attention to the amazing Rachel!
Sadly the dancers don't serve justice to the song. This song is grand and powerful. If there's a dance made, it should at least be with a huge amazing choreography.
