Deftones Original Studio Multitracks - MINERVA (Listening Session & Analysis) Chino Moreno

One of their more soothing songs for sure... Minerva packs tons of instrumental and vocal subtleties that you can only hear by studying the multitrack recordings.
Join me as I pour through some of the unique musical arranging and then reverse engineer some of the vocal effects as I analyze and enjoy Chino's incredible isolated vocal performance!

Deftones copyright owners will allow this video to remain on youtube but there must be consistent use of frequent stops. No one part of the the song in part or in whole can be played without frequent interruptions. This is partially why I stop and comment and sing during and after key sections that I play. If I just play the files, the video will be taken down. Presenting the files in this format with this kind of flow cements the FAIR USE intent which is why it can remain up on KZread. Along these lines, I can not reveal where or link to the source files or I'll get a takedown notice as well. Giving away content that is not mine to give also falls outside of FAIR USE intent. Thanks for understanding and for enjoying the video! I'm excited for you to hear all the wonderful nuances!

Is there any way to get a screenshot (or the scale degrees used) for the earworm song in the free Quickly Train your ears with David Walliman training with "The song (ear worm) that changes everything"? I had started into it weeks or months ago and just got too busy... I've had the tab open on my browser for well over a month and just found out that the course is gone. I was really excited about it because I KNEW it was going to work, but I've just been too busy. :( Is there any chance you could type in (more or less) the scale degrees of the earworm song? I don't care if it is off a little... just whatever you can think of from memory is GREAT because I can adjust it however with my guitar and make my own song, BUT the one you guys made up I was CERTAIN would work for me. I didn't have time to finish the free Marc Martel warmup video either- which I'm still disappointed about. :( Oh well... life goes on! :D Thanks for your great channel! The Michael Jackson videos are SO GOOD! Great content!!! Last... I'm curious if you have ever heard the Queensryche songs "Scarborough Fair" (cover) or " I will Remember" or "Take Hold of the Flame"? (I forget which song you reacted to which was from the 2002 "Live Evolution" show I was at in Seattle, but, if you are interested, consider checking out one of those album versions because Geoff was a better singer pre-1998). I guess that is as long as I can make this comment! :)

I don't mind when you stop, I never understood why people get upset about it. Like, the whole point of making the video is to provide commentary and analyze the content you're using. Otherwise you might as well just go listen to the content itself.

Frank is the special sauce to Deftones. He hides in the mix but if you take him out it won’t be the same.
One of my favorite Deftones song. Chino’s voice always makes me think of crashing waves. Beautifully understated in its power and dynamics.

Man you killed me with that end scream. You’re so good at what you do and you deserve more recognition for how you were able to dissect this song and improvise

Some inspiration behind the style of Chinos vocals are my bloody valentine’s “Loveless” (for melodies and layering) as well as Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins (when he quivers/adds vibrato to his voice). Hopefully you know of those bands :)
This was the second Deftones song that I ever listened to. Was completely blown by the "wall of sound" that they created with this one.

Yay, another Deftones video
Me: can I become more of a Deftones fan at this point? *watches these videos* Yep. I can. Thank you so much for these!
Cool! Always wanted to hear Deftones multitracks 🤤
You’ve gave me new found love for Chino & taught me so much some of which I accidentally do anyway! I never knew. Thank you so much for all these amazing insights & lessons.! Really love watching these!
Very nice! Loving how you are coming from a production aspect, and still analyzing the vocal.
This song sounds like it was beamed to us directly from some other planet. Love it.
Your ability to put the music into words is incredible man. As for Chino hearing his solo vocals for this song totally blew me away. I have always loved this song but I have a way deeper appreciation for it. Thank you 🙏🏾
Yesssss, I absolutely love Minerva. I use it as a reference track for my productions. One of my favourite songs sonically as well as production. Stephen's wall of guitars hits so hard in the intro. Chino's vocal takes mixed with production is masterfully done.

This is so beautiful. It's amazing how every instrument and vocal tracks come together.
What a superb detailed in depth breakdown of a masterpiece. This is the way to listen to music. Thank you! I enjoyed this.
That was so awesome. Your signal chain lesson at the end was awesome. I loved the improved vocals. Thank you for the amazing content!
Excellent job mate! Your appreciation of this legendary band is great to see 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is amazing, I never would have expected the 'imprecision' in his delivery, but he nails what matters and more and the variation blends into the churn of the mix. Love it.
Wow Chris, you good man. Like gooooooooooooood. Salute. You've got new fan in me. Ive heard a lot in this song from binging this song throughout my life, but you bring another dimension to it. Thanks!
21:38 Goosebumps. You have to do this one with your own Liepe flavour brother🙋🙋🙋🙋
Awesoommee,..Deftones is one of my favorite bands,.especially minerva,.thanx for the great analysis of that piece of art,..regards and greetings from germany
Thank you. I haven't really heard much Deftones, but this sounds great. I like it when you include production in the analysis. I really enjoyed the flow of the video. I liked the spots where you unexpectedly talk with effects on your voice. It made the video really engaging for the listener and was a nice ear workout.
I had SOO much fun trying this with my vocals, one of my fav songs for sure! thanks for the amazing work, Chris 😁
One of my favorite Deftones tracks 🔥👊🏼. Excellent video.
This song gives me wonderful memories of being young and visiting Japan for the first time in 2002. It was playing at The Hardrock there and I loved it ever since. Love the breakdown!
Such a fantastic video, So well explained and even better that it is the absolutely timeless Deftones being picked apart. ❤❤❤❤
Always sick seeing Deftones stuff. As always, you kill it! Thanks for the cool stuff! 🤟✌
I love this channel so much ughh please keep making deftones voice analysis vids bc I definitely am interested in singing like chino and i think since i already have a clean singing voice but i havent gotten the raspy singing part right yet and its kinda messing up my voice so these vids really help me to see what it is i really should be doing thanks!!!

One of your best breakdowns yet! Thanks so much for putting light on the mysterious production methods used by Terry Date & associates. I've listened to this track a hundred times before, but now I can hear it with new ears. Chino is such a heavy influencer, and like you said no doubt from owning his unique voice. It gives me new confidence to hear he can let it hang out on the album, so why can't i embrace my own nuances etc. as you've expertly pointed out.
Holy shit I’ve listened to this song since it’s release and you’ve show me even more things to love about it.
*slow clap* Superb job, my friend. Hearing this deconstructed just made me rediscover the song all over again, some 19 years later!
This was absolutely dope as hell
Your highs in the improv at the very end are hauntingly good! Remind me of young Matt Bellamy 🔥
You went absolutely off at 21:39. So beautiful and heavy. Subbed 💀
Chino, Cornell, Serj, Vedder, Staley and Greg Barnett (of the Menzingers, check ‘em out they’re dope) helped me discover my voice. I’m a deep voiced tenor who thought he was a baritone before I found Deftones and found that my voice could do much more than I let myself do. Awesome band.
This just proves why Deftones are so amazing! Every single track is so well played and they all add something important to the sound. I knew there were lot of layers to what Minerva consists of but it's so cool to hear everything separated. Oh yeah and, that bass line is SUBLIME. I never noticed how freaking good it is in this song. Of course i knew Chi was a serious talent. R.I.P bass legend 🙏
You killed it man this is killer!
Now that is a wonderful analysis of a masterpiece

loved this analysis, and very nice impromptu singing at the end :D
The Cure, especially earlier goth era, was an influence on this band and I can hear Robert Smith's singing somewhat reflected on these vocals. Can you do an analysis on Robert Smith or the Cure, it can offer a different dimension?
This is such a great video, being able to hear a track’s multitracking. Also, this is another good example where Frank’s synths could use an increase in volume rather than sitting too far in the background.
Haha loved the end, must be so fun to have that all set up where you can riff over it with your own vocals
You nailed it! Such a powerful song in my opinion
YESYESYES! My favourite DEFTONES track!
Deftones are like my top favorite band and it is so wonderful to hear all the extra sounds that they use to make a song.
Wow great job man that's one of the best vocal analysis I've watched. Would love to see a vocal breakdown of a black keys song
Deftones for life. My band #2 after Depeche Mode. Cool breakdown of this 'tones classic and fun commentary as well. Congrats on one more subscriber.

This song is probably my favorite Deftones song... hurray for this video!!!
A lot of mixing work went into this album. Top notch product.
This is one of those songs that just swallows you as you listen to it. It’s such an intoxicating feeling everytime I hear it. One of the greatest songs ever written.
Learned about gypsy jazz the other week, syn gates had a lesson on yt and said if your gonna do something simple or with few position changes accent them, add as much color as you can. Cool ideas. Love your studio progression
Omg this song 🔥🔥🔥🔥thank you so much
That snare sound is a sample layered in. True story.
Chino is dope! The minor 7th and augmented sound is awesome
This has been my favorite song by deftones for decade’s It’s so good
So weird you mentioned that you didn't hear that specific synth as I myself was also surprised to hear it. Finally makes sense why it takes them so long to release their albums.
chino does so many unique things. he experiments on every record which is why it never gets boring listening to him
Incredible content as always Chris. More deftones please! Also, I always thought that Bert from The Used has the most incredible voice. Check the bridge from ‘Poetic Tragedy’ and 2nd chorus of ‘Noises and Kisses’ madness…

Awesome Chris 👏👏👏
I don't have anything to add to the video, just commenting to help out the creator, because this video is great, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Carry on.
Awesome video as always Chris, always a treat coming home from work, watching these analysis’ and getting lots of insight to certain techniques from you. A song that I’ve been recently fascinated by vocally is “Alpha Dog” by fall out boy, a great variety of range in Patrick stumps voice here aswell as some interesting contrasts between vocal style from him, love to see you cover that one day, maybe!
It’d be amazing to see you breakdown -1 by Mudvayne! The beautiful dynamic of cleans and screams in that song are incredible!!!
It's nice someone hearing deftones in tune. I just gave up after a couple of live recordings. Chino isn't near of natural hearing but I appreciate anyone creating unique sounds no matter how is appreciated.
Been following and learning from you for a while, never subbed. Shame on me! You’re awesome Chris! Keep it going!
Thank you for this 🙏🏻🤟🏻
Thank you for this video learned a lot
Chris I'm adoring all these vocal breakdowns and have followed yours to work on my own covers (for Dragula/ Given Up/ Be Quiet and Drive!), they're extremely helpful! I'd love it if you'd ever consider doing one for a band called The Midnight, they're a really popular 80s style synth group, and I bet there are other vocalists trying to mimic them too. * Check out Days of Thunder and Shadows for some examples!
YES CHRIS!! MORE DEFTONES PLEASE
OMG! I've heard this song at least a thousand times, but never like this, now I feel I can truly appreciate all it's subtleties!
Snare ring done perfectly I find helps a snare decay longer (giving the impression of hugeness) without sounding sploshy or muddy. Extending/delaying the sound of the crack or the spank too long can take up too much space.. So a ring decaying longer than the rest of the snare makes it feel longer.
So cool dude, pls more Chino Moreno and Jeff Buckley vocal stuff, always love your analysis! :)
11:40 to 11:49 best 9 seconds of this vid. Thanks Chris. I almost always share the same reaction everytime i hear this masterpiece.
Very Very cool , great job man
Your improving at the end reminded me of Jimmy Gnecco from Ours. Nice!
Always good when my man Chris is dropping knowledge from that intelligent mind of his love it Chris 🙏 Ps was wondering if you could do a video on lajon Witherspoon of sevendust great vocalist but I haven't seen any vids on him some good songs to draw from would be black, dying to live, and waffle

Oh lord LJ is incredible! Such an amazing human being to meet too.
Dude your singing is awesome.
Great synopsis of a great song by great band. I hear the same thing with the bass and guitar players oftentimes forget that heavy distorted tones they chase after are almost always 2 or 3 multitracks mixed into one to get that super heavy, but TIGHT, driven yet clean tone.
Can you please do a video on The Mars Volta?! It would be interesting for me especially because I am a HIGH tenor and I believe there might be struggles to avoid that are unique to a voice like that. P.S. Great video btw!

Hello, Chris Liepe! For a couple of months I've been watching your singing tutorial videos and they're by far the most effective way to unlock my singing potential so thank you so much for that. I know that you mainly sing, listen, and analyse english speaking/language songs/singer, but could you analyse an Indonesian rock vocalist Tria from The Changcuters? I watched him live a couple of times and I'm always fascinated that he didn't seem to get tired after an hour of screaming and belting. So if you will, please make a video about him. Thank you so much

Thanks so much for watching the channel and interacting too! The kind of analysis you're asking for is typically something I'd do for a private student. I have to be careful about the videos I do here on KZread because they need to cast a wide net or broaden my reach as a coach. I don't make hardly any money here on KZread... I actually support myself as a vocal coach helping singing students. Making videos about artists that have recognizable names to my core audience is a great way to let people know about what I do!
