AnnaIsABanana This song has made me almost want to study physics more, even though I don’t understand it half the time. We tend to think of scientists as just stuck in labs doing experiments, but I actually know a couple of them who are quite talented in music. Even my dad can sing pretty well. He is a scientist, and he has a good singing voice, though he only sings to be goofy.

  • @williambarnes5023

@@NewKZreadisstupid Mass is attracted to other mass, just like charge is attracted to opposite charge. When you scuff across the carpet to go to touch a doorknob and get shocked, you don't think of the lightning bolt jumping from your fingertip to the doorknob as going down. You shouldn't think of gravity the same way either. The world is round. Gravity pulls us towards the center of the planet, but it also pulls the center of the planet towards your feet. We're orbiting the Sun because of gravity. Flip it around, upside down, it's still just masses attracting each other mutually. The Earth is being pulled towards the Moon by gravity. The Sun is being pulled towards the Earth. In deep space or when riding along in an orbital path, you go into zero-g. There's no such thing as down.

I have only one complaint: 1:06. Newton didn't have the notion of a "limit of a function" in the 1600s. He knew that the "h" in the difference quotient cancels out, but he wasn't really concerned with why it canceled out. The modern concept of limits come from Karl Weierstrass in the first half of the 1800s. That's about a 150 year difference from the publication of the "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy" to the rigorous formulation of limits. PS: I really do love the video. It's on repeat and is my main study music for April.

Newton also didn't know what Riemann sums were, so I'd say we can take the lyrics with a grain of historic salt. But I agree that this is an awesome parody!

Newton didn't have a formal concept of limit with epsilons and deltas, but he did talk about quantities approaching zero. He also had the completely rigorous concept of limit that goes back Eudoxus, Euclid, and Archimedes now called the method of exhaustion.

As a fan of the Leibniz form of writing calculus, I truly appreciate that reference, it always makes me smile when the true creator of calculus gets mentioned.

THANK YOU for mentioning Liebniz! Most folks yell NEWTON NEWTON NEWTON when it comes to the invention of calculus. I’m not saying Newton wasn’t brilliant; just that modern evaluation says they both arrived at said discipline independently. Newton just gets the lion’s share of the credit because he the far more well known of the two.

one technical correction: newton did not invent limits. neither did leibniz. the limit wasn't formally invented until 200 years after their deaths. they both were still using infinitessimals.
