Defining American Culture

America is one of the most diverse countries in the world, making defining American culture a difficult task to undertake. Considering the many traditions Americans from all walks of life adhere to, pass down, recognize and celebrate, one would be hard pressed to capture all that she encompasses and constitutes. Nevertheless, these Americans shared their views on their cultural identity and heritage.

Madun what other culture do we imitate? We Americans lead the auto industry, lead the gun industry, and are basically the only region in the world who plays football and baseball. And yes we are a melting pot, but our culture was built by American patriots who over threw the British and kicked them out for their own freedom. Individualism, freedom, acceptance, greed, guns, football, baseball, checks and balance, cars, patriotism, hard working.

America has a very distinct culture. Very friendly but independent, work driven, opportunistic, innovative, wealthy, direct and confrontational, extroverted in public, loud and attention seeking, stubborn and hardheaded, extortionist(bad&good) yet also generous, judgmental based on appearance and “class” (not intentional). I get treated differently when I dress like a boss 👍

Yeah you kinda have to look from the Outside in to see it and that it's been in this country from day 1 with the Natives to the all the way until today with the Recently Nationalized Americans or really anyone claiming residence. And it's all in how we puff out our chests, and cry out "We are Warriors." It's in how we preform our civic duty depending on our career. It's how we describe the land itself. It's our unsatisfactory reactions to government and things not always going our way because well it's still a very young nation. It's in our insecurities not just on a physical level but mental, It's in our push for Aethunticity, in how we express ourselves through our interests Pow Wow Regalia, is no different than a painted beer belly or a Cosplay, or even a Drag Queen during pride we all follow our own drum and river, and it's also in the way we get distracted by comfort food. But that's what makes us American I guess and right now during this Quarantine the trick is finding it again not just in subgroups but as a nation as a whole. Which will be hard for those who can't really see it. Right now it's just a broken melting pot waiting for the future.

The core of American culture is wilderness, adventure, exploration, danger, something new, something wild, the unknown. I do think people in the East, and big cities are losing that sense of culture and that is why they are more polarized then ever before. That being said, American culture is also diverse, music, movies, art, and always trying to be your best.

American culture is broken down in 4 cultures. First, there is the national culture. We all speak english, dress western, watch similar current events, celebrate the major holidays, and obey the laws. Second, there are the foreign cultures. We have immigrants from every continent that live here and they enhance the national culture. Third, there are numerous sub cultures. Each ethnic group has it's own sub culture: Native americans, whites, blacks, latinos, asian americans, etc. America has numerous sub cultures including food, sports, music, entertainment, business, radio, etc. Last, there are several regional differences too. Each state is different from one another. There are regional differences in the same state too. Just my opinion, lol

I wouldn't necessarily say that diversity and culture are mutually exclussive. Within America, there's still a common culture within the melting pot. America, as an overall culture, tends to be highly individualistic. Football is a big deal. There's a lot of school pride most places. 90% of the world's trials by jury are in America. Americans believe in opportunism and social mobility. Americans tend to view politics as a spectrum of left and right. Americans tend to start driving at much younger ages than most the rest of the world. At the very least, all Americans share a certain history and heritage; for example, Americans have a cultural identity as the nation of people who put people on the moon, and the nation that endured September 11 together. There's a lot more, but you could definitely make a list of over a hundred things that make American culture unique. When you look at it from afar, you'll definitely notice how the culture is quantifiably different from other nations.

I recently Googled the definition of culture. While I did not know the full definition until now, I have taken a specific stance on this for most of my adult life, and would like to share this thought which i believe in so strongly. Culture is separate from race, religion, etc. While these other categorical words are meant to distinguish one group of humans from another, and by default end up 'separating' these groups, culture has a way of binding people together. Traditions and customs, like walking around your house with shoes on in America, or the food of the area are what make culture. While some of these cultural traits may be products of belief systems and values, they are not one of the same. Stop purposefully segregating yourselves based on stupid things like color and history, and get on with some unification already, peeps.

There is no such thing as American Culture, there are Sub-Cultures in Different American Cities that Derive from other Large Cultures. For Example,Boston:Irish Culture,New York:Italian/Jewish Culture,Miami:Cuban Culture, and Los Angeles:Mexican Culture. Each City or Surrounding Areas have many Different Cultures that Derive from many Different Ethnicities, and usally having a Majority culture Reign Supreme among other Cultures in Relavance in that Area. For Example, a city like L.A.,which has many different cultures, but if you asked anyone what the culture of Los Angeles is,most would say primarily say Mexican,or Mexican-American Culture.American Culture simply just refers to Political and Economic Ideology such as Free-Market Capitalism,Freedom of Speech,Freedom of Religion,Right to Bear Arms,The Bill of Rights,etc..... .In terms of Ideas and Values,I consider myself American, but Culturally I would consider myself a New Yorker, that is of Italian Descent and Embraces Italian-American Culture Widely found and Recogonized throughout the Philadelphia,New York, and New England Regions. While I do Recgonize that there Certain American Staples like Highways,Certain Fast Food Resturants and Grocery Stores Exclusive to America, but the way of Life is just Different depending on where you live. For Example,if you live in New York or Washington D.C.,the Transportation is so Superb and Convienant to a point where there is no need for a Car if you there, but if you live in a city like L.A. or Dallas, the Transportation is AWFUL and you'll need a Car for everything.American Culture simply means we all have the Culture of the Major Ethnicites or Cultures in our Citys, but we all share the same values of Liberty,Equality, and Freedom. And that's what makes Us Real Americans.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I would argue that America is its own culture thanks to the fusion of many other cultures coming together to build a country. Although, African slaves are solely responsible for the wealth, might and foundation of this country that became America as we know it today. I believe that there is an American culture. One that is unique because of what it is, and who we are as a People. Also, the definition of culture includes values, heritage and principles.

Culture is a way of life with set values shared. Diversity in America is subjective and now based on political correctness and agenda. We’re lead to believe to embrace others with acceptance and tolerance of their backgrounds and then when you do, you accused of cultural appropriation and being racist ? There is a “culture” in Western society that thrives on looking to be offended now at every turn. The reason we have movements is because we either lost our values or never had them. How can we respect others when we don’t respect ourselves ?

American culture is ingrained in our nation and was largely designed by the Founding Fathers, obvisouly the ideas of freedom but American ideology is a two part funtioning machiane, freedom of choice is our god given right regonized by government, but the second part of the social machine is the deep ingrained religious morality to ensure that America can remain free but without devolving into pure anarchy or pure tyranny. Every single one of the founders believed that the constitution and was created for a Religious people. this is a very basic idea of american founding ideology that goes much deeper, now as a result of this founding ideology Americans developed a very strong community, which is again paramount to the success of the american experiment. The faceless government should not be the one to lift you out of your debts and ills, but rather your neighbors whom care for you like a brother or a sister, community is by far one of the most important qualites of the American Culture. The reason it is becoming harder to define our culture is because many have been trying to undermine the foundation of our culture, to the point we are at today where government is so large the founders would be rolling in their graves, chilrend are brought up in public schools that teach them nothing of value and defintly dont even hint on founding ideology, with power hungry leaders who again have no clue of founding ideology or simply dont care for it if they do understand it. our cultural foundation is cracked and if it is not restored soon the damage may become permant.

The TRADITIONAL American culture is self-reliance, a belief in small government, private charity, hard work, private organizations for making society better (i.e. Rotary Club), a type of Christianity that does NOT guilt people for being wealthy and a rejection of the idea of "royalty". BUT. The truth is that America TODAY has mostly rejected/lost our traditional values. They have been replaced by socialism, a love of big government, the idea of "let the other guy do it", a rejection of religion and a belief in "moral equivalency" (i.e. you have no right to judge the Arab world).

American culture was originally supposed to be freedom. But because you offer people freedom, immigrants don’t have to integrate if they choose not to. So what you end up with is everyone painting “American Culture” whatever color they want based on what they see. Keeping culture (not race) pure is a beautiful thing. It’s what lead to Japan, China, and many other beautiful cultures being so refined. But whenever there is a community of Caucasian’s, for some reason everyone says “this is too white, this is evil.” So Americans sacrificed their culture for diversity. We will never know what American culture was supposed to be, because it’s already been drowned out. And if you say “our culture is diversity” Is diversity of culture, not race, but culture really such a good thing?

Jazz, Rock music, hip-hop, baseball, basketball, hot dogs and hamburgers (I think these foods are American?). Of course jazz and hip hop were heavily oppressed initially and hip hop is still not respected. So I think it’s like the young lady at the end said as well, oppression is part of American culture and the culture won’t be defined until equality is reached.

I thinks it’s hard for people to define Americas culture other than “diverse, melting pot, independent, hard working,” blah blah, because we don’t really have any traditions. No special foods, clothes, dances, etc. that has been passed down for generations. There’s nothing that truly unifies all the citizens of the US. It’s because we are still a new country that was only formed about, 400 years ago? Created by all these immigrants, not by one specific type of group of people. Yeah, we have history for sure but not culture per say. As an American, I think that majority of us also look at other countries and envy them, like we could pick out things that define a country so much better than the US.

We cannot directly say that american culture is black culture, asian culture, europian culture, because that would be unoriginal and plagiarized. If we say that culture is freedom. It's not right because culture make us bound to such as belief, races, language, material traits, etc. It is a shared interest, a value of which can be define clearly with a glimpse of observation. In spite of that, I could think of the great western culture, the cowboy culture in the 1700s which can be proudly portray america in the value of culture
