No this is not the reason. The men marching are dressed as "sappers". The beards are an old tradition dating back to the Napoleonic Wars. From wikipedia: "In the French Army, since the 18th century, every grenadier battalion had a small unit of sappers. The danger of such missions and their short life expectancies, allowed them certain privileges, such as the authorization to wear beards. In addition to their beards and axes, they traditionally wear leather aprons and gloves."

@MrCagivaman in the 11th century (the discovery age) many expeditions were colaborated between france and britain, the language was french because that is the languge both of them spoke. once there was war between the two, britain focused more on english to spererate themselves from the french. look it up

Best fighting troops in Europe, creme de la creme, we in UK are just as proud of our Guards regiments and the Royal Marines. Mention that the 'Legion' is on its way, and most rogue African states run the other way.

It is amazing how a tough regiment like the Legion can march to a tune about a sausage

MrCagivaman, that reference to the New Orleans blood sausage was a nickname for their tightly rolled bedrolls. Also, the line about there being none for the Belgians because they were lazy shirkers was because the King of Belgium had banned his people from joining the Legion and fighting for France.

@dvolkor No The FFL is never a Special Force and none of its elements are considered Special Forces Some companies, like the ones your mentionned, are highly trained and can be deployed with SF (part of task force) The SF in France are part of the COS

You know when you really think about it, it mush be very embarrassing to that their elite force, and the force we always see namely the foreign Legion are exactly that FOREIGNERS. What's more the French have the nerve to call it the French Foreign Legion. What is wrong with these people, why can't they use their own Frenchmen in this elite force. I think I already know the answer to that question do0n't you. Anyway the foreign men of the legion always display brilliantly.

@LittleFrenchy72 Crap !!!!!! The English area tribes spoke their own dialect which is closest to Saxon = Germanic. Never, never have the Brits spoken French. If you believe it, Prove it !!!!

MrCagivaman, after the Norman Conquest in 1066 AD the mostly French upper crust Brits spoke French. What passed for English back then was considered a peasant language fit only for the unwashed masses. By the time England and France went to war again, ages later, English had replaced those pesky suffixes that drove me nuts in high school Latin, and later were still no fun when I learned Russian for the NSA. Nonnative speakers studying English as a foreign language may disagree, but I like it better this way
