Beef tallow for the win! Such a great taste(especially eggs)and a lot healthier. I use olive oil once in awhile still but the vast majority of things cooked on our stove top are with the beef tallow or unsalted butter.

Cody, mountain cedar is about peak. It starts in Central Texas in late December, then goes on thru January and almost all of February. Pat (wife) was sensitive to it and we would head out to Tuscon, AZ in January to get away from it. As you may remember, we now live in Hot Springs Village and no more cedar fever here. Unfortunately, there is not a lot that can be done for it. Hope you are feeling better by now. Say hello to Kelly for us. Remember, you have an open invite to come stay with us.

a message for the both of you, essentical oils mixed with a non scented lotion cheap stuff, to ward off the nats and mosquitos the best is cedarwood, but it an cause burns on the skin so test it before using it, the next ones are peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender etc, i mix these 4 together, in the lotion for the comfort away from nats and mosquitos. in your camper if you so chose, like me , when camping i have 2 small plants of cedarwood , the trick is place one in front of the truck and one in the rear, water a large cup of water to get the smell out and live in peace. when hiking place a lavender dryer sheet in your hat and put on the lotion and live in peace,

Best cast iron skillet I had was Korean made. Looked like the CNC Type marks were made while the pan was still not hard. The marks seem to hold onto thin coating of oil as for an omelet cooking. Always perfect. Cleaned up like Teflon. Someone looted my campsite in Northern California along with two years collection of camping gear, clothes, cook gear. Really set me back. The name of the game with cast iron is even heat distribution and heat retention when half a dozen eggs are dumped onto it.

The first year I had cedar fever so bad you feel like you have the flu. Next time find a health food store and ask for the drops for cedar fever. Use it the times a day. It does work. I have 2 old fashioned skillets. 1 is 45 years old and the other is at least 75 years old (it was my mother’s) my daughter gave me one of the ceramic one for our RV. I’ve only used it to cook shrimp. I still use my regular pan for bacon and eggs and just about everything else. I just won’t cook any liquids in it. The seasoning is so old now I never have problems with sticking.

I know the frustration with mosquitoes. Had the same thing happen to me and my camping partner at Santee Coastal Reserve primitive drive-up sites off Highway 17 near the ocean here in South Carolina. I braved it twice. They were so bad that I had to get up in the middle of the night and with my windows rolled down, drive on the dirt road at a speed where it would blow them out of my car then I rolled up the windows, returned to camp, stayed in my SUV until I left the next day. Clouds of them. Lots of standing water at that location due to high tides and storms filling low areas. Probably like that area y'all stayed in. Good fishing though. Stay safe!

Kellie add salt to cast iron before u cook if it sticks add oil then salt...u can also throw them in the campfire take it out let it cool, oil it then fry a piece of fat in it. I also noticed on a previous post u store it dry. U gotta lightly oil it. N of course im sure u know to never use soap on cast iron. These are my mommas tips, she was from north texas.. she used cast iron skillets all her life. When u clean it use steel wool, especially if its got meat residue in it. When this happens, u heat it after it's clean and lightly oil it...let it cool and i always store mine in the oven, its a good spot to let it cool as well. Hope it helps.

You can also take a $10 lodge cast iron pan and grind then sand it down to a smooth surface like that. That's what I did.

Ugh. Mosquitos and sick. No fun. I hope you feel better soon. If not, get into the doctor. There are several nasty bugs going around now.

Agree on the cedar fever; its a hill country thing with all the cedar trees. Next to oak tree pollen, not sure which is worst. Need to start medicating a month before w/Zyrtec or similar and Flonase. Allows you to live here (we live in San Antonio) without the annual woes of cedar or oak.

I could have warned you about the mosquitoes at Sea Rim State Park. I couldn’t even get out of my truck without being swarmed. They seem partial to white vehicles. Hope Cody is feeling better.

I’ve never gone back. Isn’t worth it when you can’t enjoy the campsite you’re paying for.

I thought you'd be having a good time in Fredericksburg. So sorry you're experiencing unfortunate happenings. Would you go back to Terlingua? You seemed to love it there and hated to leave.

Thanks for the introduction to Fredericksburg cast iron Co. I will be looking at there merchandise to review on my channel. Just had similar symptoms think it was the fluctuations in temperature. It lasted about 3 days and I started to feel better. If you all are ever near Lake Charles La. Would love to meet you both. Keep up the good work and stay well.

After cooking bacon, drain grease and put some water in the pan. Bring to a rolling boil for several minutes. May have to do it a few times but it SHOULD remove that sticky layer from the bacon grease

I understand Baja is nice! ❤ I think I've mentioned this before, but my mom had a designated cast iron egg pan. And I pitied anyone caught even thinking about using it for anything else! LOL! My momma was a soft-spoken, patient woman, I swear! Unless you messed with her cast iron! I remember when my sister in law washed them all in hot, soapy water 😮 I felt sooooo bad for both of them! I have never seen my mom have to struggle so hard to keep her cool! And my poor sister in law went from so proud of herself to a hot mess... I'll never forget it and I know Katie never will! I can laugh now and hopefully my momma can from the other side! 😂 My mom was the 3rd generation to use her cast iron set, so I only know that it takes time to get regular cast iron nonstick!
