Halycon Digest is one of my favorite albums of all time. I could listen to it over and over again and never get sick of it. The way the songs fade together, the way the mood changes throughout the album... it's pure bliss. It's genius. It expresses a deep feeling I have that I cannot put into words

Eloquently put doll. This song, much like running arms spread in a circle on a hilltop, only dizzy with wonder.

This song represents everything that is good about young kids picking up guitars and doing whatever they want. From 3:07 on "Desire Lines" is simply absolute joy. Completely, utterly wonderful. Long live Deerhunter.

what makes this song so hypnotic and amazing is that the second half instrumental section has a 5 measure bass line mixed in with patterns of 4, and 4 measure intervals - the clashing of those rhythmic elements makes it more interesting

that's definitely the best part of the song. But I'd argue it's also the repetition of those simple licks and the increasing intensity of the instrumental piece (drums, distortion, effects and changing licks) that makes it reach towards a climax.

They're not really underrated, they're quite a critically acclaimed band actually.

So sad to hear the news. Never got to see them live, but I’ve always loved the Pitchfork clip of the 11-minute jam of “Nothing Ever Happened”; Josh just kept hammering the bass. So young at 39. So sorry. 😥

I remember these dudes finished up their show in my hometown by just walking off stage with all the amps cranked and the all the guitars and mics sitting right next to them blasting feedback. The house soundguy was NOT in on the joke.

The shoegazer band Lush also had a song called "Desire Lines" that was equally hypnotic.

I listened to this song for the first time like a week ago and I instantly fell in love!

Great listening to this immediately after ‘Helicopter/he would have laughed’ live. All cranked up to 11, and just getting lost in the intricacies combined with such searing repetitive distortion. Love it. And thank you Josh.

There's definitely some shoegazing going on here

So it happened to you too, huh? It just autoplayed The Rat from The Walkmen, and then right this afterwards. I immediately fell in love, but forgot the name of the second song. I didn't know how to display your history of songs, and after finding out, I was so happy I could listen to Desire Lines again. It's been like a month now or something, and it's part of all my playlists.

I like how they are teaching experimental/ambient/shoegaze fans to appreciate pop writing, and how they're teaching everyone else to listen to more complicated music. It's great when bands have fans divided into tribes for each album, just cause each one is so great but so unique too.

I listen to this EVERYDAY :D the best of the best....

Yeah, but, c'mon...the singing is positively, undeniably God-awful. The musicianship is really good, good guitars, everything else is fab. But the singing? Krikey! That's always been my biggest beef with so many alternative bands...slack singing.

There was so much great music exploding from these pockets all over the map ( mainly here in the states) Small tribes of artist , film makers , musicians, poets and drug addicts were coming together and building indie scenes and their towns. This was right before the "Hipster" era with the long beards and skinny jeans... So many great indie bands were popping up everywhere with damn good material.... Damn I wish I could go back to 2002....

Great hypnotic song. The reverse bass-guitar in the middle cut this song in 2, just like a Lynch movie. Thank you also for having taken the best of Brian Eno needles in the camel's eye ... That makes avery very good song.

Fantastic song. The beginning always reminds me of one of Arcade Fire's first singles, Rebellion.

I got to see them open for NIN circa ~2007, and they made such an impression on me. When Halcyon Digest came out, they truly became one of my faves. Beautiful music, I can't get enough.
