I took my first deer in Pennsylvania with this same rifle. So did my father and my grandfather. We used to reload our own ammo for it since it was either hard to find or really expensive if you could find it. Sadly, I lost it in a house fire along with several other sentimental guns... I was hoping my children would all take their first deer with the same rifle. Thanks for making these videos!

If there’s anything to be learned here, it’s the importance of tracking. Let us not focus too much on antler and let us focus more on the responsibility of ending a life and following it through, even if it means contacting the neighbor.

Another thing is practice during the off season to perfect your shot and get you scopes zeroed in so you can have faith in your shot and not have to guess where your going to hit the deer.

usually contacting the neighbor means they will look for the deer for you, if it has a large set of antlers they definitely won't find it. in south central pa most people won't allow you to track an animal because they're afraid to run a buck off of their property for someone else to harvest.

gfg 826 my grandfather told me it’s better to swallow your pride and tell the neighbor rather than to let whatever you’re hunting suffer. It works out well since he gets along well with the surrounding property owners and they usually share whatever they get 😁

My hat is off to you. First and foremost you set the bar for outdoor KZread channels in my opinion. Secondly I’ve watched all your videos since you’ve been making them. Throughout the years I’ve seen you pass on so many different bucks a lot of people would shoot because of how dedicated you are to deer management and producing big bucks. But the fact you were able to keep your head up and keep hunting after not 1 but 2 horrible discoveries and be able to self film a kill from the ground with no scope shows you are on a level of your own. Hands down this video was the most emotionally involved I’ve ever been while watching anything on KZread because as an archery hunter for 20 years I could only imagine how upset those 2 bucks going to waste mad you. I’d tell you to stay positive but I know you will... side note Ron from Pittsburgh was my music teacher all throughout elementary. I love your videos man. Congrats on the doe.

I love watching these videos because they remind me of hunting with my uncles and cousins at the cabin in Brookville, PA. The cabin has been sold and most of them have either passed on or are too old to hunt. Even though I live in Oregon now and hunt elk and blacktail there is something about hunting the PA woods that is irreplaceable. We always listened to the Big Moose on Sundays before opening day. Thanks for the videos.

My local gun shop has an 1894 in .32-40 I'm looking at, I already have a pair of 1894 Winchesters in .38-55, recently found an 1899 Savage carbine in .30-30 that's one of the nicest shooting guns I've ever owned. Last deer I shot was with a 120 year old Sporterized Swedish Mauser rifle, nice doe at about 100 yards, the deer never took a step. To me there are too many nice old guns out there to hunt with that you don't need a newer gun. I have a Marlin 410 lever action from around 1929 or so, already took that squirrel hunting this year, bagged a nice one, was successful last year too with it along with an old Husqvarna 12 gauge side by side.

John, Love this video and showing your true passion and feelings on management. I've had the same issue in the past with does being killed and dogs running deer. I'm only working a 100 acre plot, but the doe numbers are back up, I just have to stop the dogs from running deer. Have several nice buck on trail cam and the same dogs chasing the rutting bucks. this creates the hardest object of keeping the deer on the property. I only shoot a buck each year and pass on the does. We are only allowed to shoot a doe in archery or last 2 days of Muzz. Last night was the last day and I watched 10 does feed 50 yards from my stand before getting down. 4-5 of those does were mature enough to breed and I passed to keep populating the area. demonetize or not your videos are the best and keep me coming back to PA for flintlock season.

32-40 is a great old round. It’s mostly a handloaders caliber at this point. I don’t mind having to hand load some of the old school rounds like 32-40, etc. I have a savage model 1899 made in 1909 chambered in 303 savage. I must reload all of my ammo as there is little decent factory ammo available for it. But I don’t mind having to do that. Great video and your truly a great hunter and sportsman.

It’s more of a target cartridge although with right loads it’s not bad for deer at woods ranges. Id stick with heavy for caliber cast bullets made from clip on wheel weights.

A dear friend of mine back home in his native (North Western) South Carolina inherited several "obsolete" caliber rifles and carbines, both Winchesters and Marlins, ranging from .25-20 up to .45-110 from his Grandfather, his Dad, and several uncles since the 1970s. He has taken any number of "eatin' size" and very nice "trophy" bucks and does with those smoke poles. As My Lovely Bride and I are on the verge of moving back home, in just a few days from now, I am looking forward to next deer season in our home state and, if he likes me at all, hunting with either his .32-40, .38-40, or .44-40....Or better yet, his .45-110!!! If you haven't noticed, I really, really enjoy the videos you produce where the above mentioned "obsolete" caliber rifles are featured! Take care and keep the great videos coming!!!! I must, sadly, say that the majority of deer, regardless of sex, age, or size/weight that I have stumbled up on in my life were (back tracking was the method I used) wounded with either arrows or shotguns. The "hunters" apparently felt that the deer they shot at were "clean misses" or the "hunters" were too damn, stinkin' lazy or uneducated, to make the effort to track their deer down. That's my experience and my opinion and I'm stickin' top 'em.

Nice video! That’s cool you used a vintage family heirloom rifle to shoot one! My dad shot his first deer, an 8 point that he has mounted like they used to do with a neck mount with a mirror and the 4 legs for a gun holder with a 32-20 that was borrowed from his dads friend in 1967. He was in a treestand over a creek on his grandfathers property that was really good deer hunting near the battlefield in Gettysburg. I still love hearing that story. I never got to hunt there as the farm got sold a long time ago. We have a lot of hunting heritage; in my distant family is S. Stanley Hawbaker who was an animal lure maker and huge trapper back then. Every chance I can get out hunting is a great day! Love your videos!

I reload for it and killed a nice 8 point a couple of years ago, my other favorite is a marlin M375 chambered in 375win, they only made 16,000 of em, so it's a keeper, also reload for it. Keep up the good work, and I feel your pain.

Those dead bucks indeed were likely poorly shot, but is there a road nearby, where perhaps the 2nd buck was struck by a vehicle? There was no blood on the animal or the ground, and clearly his death throes weren't super fast. His kicking legs removed all the leaves. Also, regarding dead deer being found near water, it's not so much that they are running downhill - although certainly that can be a factor. Rather, mortally wounded deer instinctively go to water, because the blood loss makes them very thirsty. It's a GREAT recovery tip. If a recovery turns into a massive tracking job, and/or the shot was poor or marginal, one of the best strategies is to back out and return much later or at next light and search the water sources. Oh, and I'm not sure people appreciate what a fantastic shot that was on the doe. You were standing, shooting off-hand, bent and the knees, AND working the camera so you would get the shot! That is CRAZY concentration and execution! Just incredible footage. GREAT, GREAT job!

Thanks Jake! As for the second buck. yes there was a road maybe 150 yards away. but it is down a somewhat steep hillside. so I just wouldnt think it would run uphill that steep and far and then just collapse. it didnt appear to have any scuffed up hair or broken bones so its hard to say.

@@Leatherwoodoutdoors Certainly good points, and of course there's no way to know. However, I have seen deer killed by vehicles that showed no obvious damage. I don't think you turned that buck over, so it's possible there was an entry wound on the other side and no exit would. Not real common, but happens often enough. I feel bad for how much buck wasting goes on up there, and certainly that's an ugly, infuriating situation, but otherwise John it looks like you hunt a deer paradise! The deer are healthy, and there is a poop-load of them!! I hunt in MS, one of the most deer-populated states, but I NEVER see that many deer still hunting/stalking, and you were seeing all that action moving at a decent clip and FILMING IT!! That just amazes me. And - MAN - you spotting that buck bedded down on that ridge face behind that evergreen was *impressive*. Seriously, I hunt exactly like that - been doing it for 35 years - so I know what a challenge stalking is without having to worry about camera angles and getting the shot. I just shake my head at what you do!

I've had this happen to me too, such a shame that people don't go looking hard enough for a buck they've shot . It pisses me off real badly, so I feel sorry that you ran into 2 extremely nice bucks like that.

Great video John!! Always enjoy your take on hunting. I feel the same frustrations you do and have had similar incidents on my property. With that in mind, watching the previous Leatherwood video with Boozer, it seems he does exactly what you complain about. There were two shots fired at a nice buck while he was running. At a far distance as well. That is what leads to wounded deer.

i passed up a nice 10 point this year because i couldn’t get a good shot. there was a tree in front of the front shoulder, all i could see was his stomach down and his neck and head. i passed it up and chose a nice doe where i could get a nice clean double lung shot.

Thanks for the great video. Love to see you sneak thru the woods and find these deer. My guess is that when some people see antlers, they blaze away hoping to "get lead into it" without waiting for a good shot. Most deer gut shot will not be found. They can go a long ways. Thanks again for you excellent videos.

I'll take my .32 Special over a 30-30 any day of the week! Nothing wrong with 30-30 but theres just something nostalgic about a .32 Win Special lever gun. We have a model 94 made in I believe 1902 or 1903. Also my main deer rifle is my Marlin 336 .32 special passed on to me by my grandfather. Love you videos! Keep it up

Your videos with this and 25-20 are great demonstrations of shot placement & ranges appropriate for certain cartridges that many people would say "you can't hunt deer with that". What comes to my mind: 9mm and 40 S&W carbine ballistics. The 9mm from a 16" barrel starts where heavy 25-20 or 32-20 end in terms of muzzle velocity and grain weight, and the .40 out of a 16" barrel comes just shy of 32-40 ballistics with 155-165gr bullets. Just food for thought, great video and hope the people hunting your area have learned when to not take a shot and you've found fewer lost bucks on your property in recent years😢🤞

Finally got a chance to watch this video! Well done man, I really enjoy these videos with the old rifles! It was definitely hard to watch you find those bucks like that, it has to be depressing for you to find them Year after year when your trying so hard to manage your property... I don’t have anything against guys shooting bucks of that caliber, it just sucks that they made bad shots and the deer went to waste.

If I'm not mistaken, you can see the actual bullet hit where the hair stands out just before she takes off. My Grandpa had one of those full size rifles exactly like that. My uncle inherited it and passed it on to my cousin. I inherited a much older gun, a .40 cal. scheutzen made in Wisconsin-but I digress, sorry! Enjoy your channel and admire your ethical approach to hunting.
