Deer Hair Hackle Dry Fly - Special dry fly tying technique

Спорт

Wanna tie a super floating dry fly, without spending big bucks on top quality dry fly hackle? This Hair Hackle Dry Fly is a 2 minute tie, will float for hours, and is fat and juicy enough to make a large trout or a smallmouth bass rise to the surface and engulf it. And it is hardy enough to take a beating, without freaking out;0)
Can be tied with hair wings as well to better imitate specific insects like caddis flies, mayflies, stone flies or any kind of terrestrial. This version is allround useful for most situations and might even be taken for a hatching insect with a trailing shuck. Just vary the colour of the body, to match your needs.
If you think wool isn't suited for dry flies, think again. It suck up fly floatant just as eager as water. There is a good reason why wool is the material of choice for the New Zealand style strike indicators.
Tie a bunch of these. You can fill your box in no time, and be ready for the first warm days of spring.
Thanks for watching :0)

Thanks Graeme. You are right, there's a minor imperfection in the hook point. I just grabbed a brand new hook straight out of the package, and didn't notice. Actually when I inspect the finished fly I can't see it, but on the macrofotage in the film it is noticeable. I think it is the first time I find a faulty hook from this brand, but that might say more about my eyesight than the quality of the hooks ;0) Thanks for your feedback. Cheers, Michael :0)

Nice one Michael! I like deer hair flies and tie a lot of poppers. My "secret" to keep them floating high is to soak the popper in Thompson's Original Water Seal (a sealer for wood, concrete and brick - about $20 Canadian for 3.79 liters) for a couple of hours, blot off the extra sealant and let them dry air for a day or two. Works great. Cheers!

Thanks Brian. Right now we are at midwinter, and the lakes are frozen. If this weather keeps up, soon the slower rivers will be locked as well. So it's gonna be a while before I can drop that dry fly in front of a rising trout. Sure looking forward to that. Nope... no parcel yet. I will give you a notice as soon as it shows up, mate. Nice & buggy, I love it! :o) Reminds me of Fran Betters patterns, my favorite bugs. Check out Art Scheck's spun dun. It's similar but the hair butts become the thorax and the bottom half of hair hackle is trimmed off. Dave Whitlock had a skating type Spider dry fly, you know with the hackle tied at least 2 sizes larger than normal, but he used two spun deer hair hackles - one tips facing forward, the next tips facing back, then pushed them together so they supported each other. I don't remember if he tied the tail/body first or after. Yes, that's a cool way to save on expensive hackle. In fact, I tied and fished Comparaduns then Haystacks and Usuals for years before I finally bought a #2 Grizzly cape. Thanks Michael, that was a great tie and tutorial. Cheers :o)

Thanks Joe. Yes we are standing on the shoulders of giants. I've learned a lot from Scheck and even more from Dave Whitlock. You just reminded me, that I have to check up on Fran Betters. Will do that. Cheers, Michael :0)

@@MichaelJensensAngling Yeah, Betters is a homegrown hero of mine. Simple, natural material patterns that catch fish. We went to his shop in the late 80's into the 90's and fished the W. Branch Ausable R. and other Adirondack waters. Quite a learning experience for me. I bought two books and some materials from him. Best advice he gave me on how to tie his patterns was "just make 'em look buggy" :o)

@@MichaelJensensAngling Yup, it's well worth the investment. Lots of flies use snowshoe hind feet for flies besides the Usual, a variant I tie of Rosenbauer's SS Emerger on an Eagle Claw L042 with grizzly hackle instead of cdc works great. A technique I like with the Usual is to pull it under the surface 1/2 or 3/4 the way through a drift, like Betters tells in his book. I've had trout charge it from under a dead fall in a fairly swift current doing that. Check out Fran Betters on my playlist. There's 2 of Betters tying the Ausable Wulff. For the Usual there's D. McPhail, Eivind Berulfsen, Darren from Piscator Flies, and Bait Shop Brothers ( from my local bait shop Micky's :o) Also there's one video of the West Branch Ausable at Whiteface Mt. during heavy spring runoff. That's near where we stayed when we went there, thank goodness the river wasn't raging like that! However the wading can be tough in certain areas. Yeah Betters was an awesome guy. I have some flies tied by him, which I'll never use, very buggy and look rough and thrown together but balanced. I also have a salmon fly, a Green Highlander I think, tied by him. Good times, great memories. Cheers buddy :o)
