That’s a brutal spot to open the video. You think villain ever goes nuts and jams AA for value or something? Or maybe turns 99 into a bluff with the blocker to 98s? Probably not but still a sick laydown

i think its a horrible play. Think about how many other hands he will be value betting there, he will take that same line with all jacks. if he folds trips, he is folding all jacks, then ur not calling often enough

Im not close to his level, but I think he should have called as well, this guy is utg, so he doesn’t have any 8 expect 1 combination of 8/9s and depending on him maybe 8,7 suited. However he would still value bet AA,KK,QQ, AJo/s,QJs,KJs. Any how many T9 does he have. Only suited one so 4. He also could have perhaps pocket 7 or 2. So you win against a bunch of hands. But I am sure Matt had a read, he is a very good player, and mathematically speaking there is still times you should fold this hand. Unfortunately I don’t have piosolver so i cannot provide exact numbers.

I would call, but I think it's legitimately a close spot. If a straight was the only better hand Matt's opponent could have, it would be an easy call from a game theory perspective. However, like Matt said, his opponent can have trip 8s with a better kicker. Matt's own range also contains trip 8s with a better kicker, so he may be "allowed" to fold some weaker 8x hands like 86 (again, from a game theory perspective).
