Only 15 minutes in and I'm loving this. These are things we've lost.

I would not have ever expected to see David Brooks at an A4H event, but he is brilliant here. Also loved his book The Road to Character, which highlights parts of Lonely Man of Faith (1963) and the difference between "resume values" and "eulogy values." What Brooks is talking about is not just nice to have, but critical to the future of democracy.

Thank you, Mr Brooks! Coming back to our emotions - all of them - and real vulnerability helps us to feel truly human. I have been in my head all my life, but being able to now cry and feel pain has opened up my world, and I now long to make greater connections with those I meet everyday. Thank you for your inspiration!

As I listen now to you talking about depression, there ARE things we can do to help ourselves and those we love, to understand this condition. This is another form of going deeper, but society taught us to hide our tears and ‘difficult’ emotions. Please listen to Dr Gabor Maté explain WHY depression, addiction of all kinds, and many diseases develop. Depression can be helped, but it takes a lot of understanding and what Dr Maté calls “Compassionate Inquiry”, into the origins of our depression. His book, “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts” is super helpful in explaining depression and addiction. His wisdom has helped me turn my life around, and I am now helping others. ❤

As a person with severe hearing loss, I find these conversations completely aggravating. I like listening to Mr. Brooks but his talks are ALWAYS given in venues that have the absolute worst acoustics and the microphones or recording devices are turned down so low that even at the highest volume on my computer, I have to rewind and rewind constantly to listen to a statement 2-5 times to decipher what was said. Turn the recording volume up!!! I can always turn the sound down but I can only turn it up so much.
