Everything about this method looks super awkward and drawn out. I prefer the method of inverting it completely and then coming up underneath it, breaking the vacuum seal with one hand, and then quickly flipping the entire canoe up and over the water. You end up with minimal water left inside because it already drained out when it was inverted. The last step is to climb into the canoe from the ends. This provides you with maximum stability with no need to thrash around like a beached fish. It helps if you can tie a strong loop at the end of the canoe as a stirrup to aid in climbing.

Great tip! I just got back to canoeing after 30 years away from it. I'll just have to try that out on my next outing.

Very good. Also a good idea to carry a bailer and to wear a leash so your canoe won't get blown away from you in high wind.

Good video Russell. One of these days I'll get to try this out with my Old Town Pack canoe. It only has a 32" beam :-)

this is an excellent tip! the life jacket is certainly your best friend. with it on you can relax and execute the shakeout. this move appears a little difficult, but with patience it can be done. thanks for the tips!

Looks like hard work. Would be even harder without the float jacket.

Great video. I got a canoe last year and this is very valuable info as I know sooner or later I will flip it.

You are not in deep water, you are standing there.

This has not happened to me yet and I'm very thankful for that. But, having watched the process I can say this... I'm going to tie some sort of bailer to the boat. I live in Florida, and the last thing in the world that I'd want to do down here is start thrashing around in the water. #gatorbait LOL I'm going to try to be as stealthy as possible and hope I have enough time.

Great demonstration with a sizable (tripping) canoe...many other videos use only pack canoes with double floatation (not a criticism, just an observation). Thanks, Russell!!! - Jack Mosher, Registered Maine Guide

Get on the end and spin the canoe. Water is out, climb in on the stern.

the Hump n' pump is only effective on round bottom canoes(thats what she said!). you are better off doing a lift n flip from under canoe. your side entry was very well done tho!

Getting back into the canoe solo is not that easy. Most people will flip the canoe or fill it back up with water trying. It takes a lot of skill and upper body strength to do it as easily as he makes it look. I can do 25 pushups and have practiced quite a bit but find this move impossible. Many other videos show using a counterweight to get back into the boat, even that is difficult.

Now shut us the unedited video... some suscpicous cuts there. also, looks like you have your feet on the bottom, maybe an edited demonstration in real world conditons would be more informative
