Deep Snow, XCD Skis, Thinking About Ski Width

Breaking trail in deep snow is a chore no matter which skis you own. This is part one of two videos that ponders the merits of XCD ski width.

Tom that is some spectacular scenery and a pure white blanket of fun in the sun towards the end. I see Julie may be breaking trail again (-: All that snow in the beginning is making my skis twitch. If you have too much I will send you a shipping label for USPS expedited. They will be dropping by with a Piggy back freezer trailer. Thunderstorms and rain here now in Ontario, CA. Last year we were XC on April fools day.

I hope you get some good snow out of this latest weather system. Our forecast could go either way depending on temp and elevation. I appreciate your humor, and Julie enjoys reading the comments as well. Take care and thanks for tuning in.

Hi Tom, Last year I tried vintage wood touring skis (w pine tar), and I had the same voile 3 pin bindings and Fisher boots - like yours! The vintage skis work great even in deep snow. I'm looking forward to this winter!

Julie's skied a set of Trysil Knut wooden skis for nearly 30 years and they were her favorite skis. Needless to say, it was my job to pine tar and keep them waxed. You can see them proudly standing next to all the plastic skis in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJpr0JJwmcefl6w.html They ski great, but breakage can be a concern. As I've said many times, old school is ultra cool. Thanks for tuning in and I hope we have a great winter.

Gorgeous scenery. Living in the mountains must be fun. We used to get snow like that but seem less now..

Great workout it looks like on the skinnier skis. Such beautiful country! My widest backcountry skis are 78mm under foot, but are 185cm. I definitely experience some of this sinking "fun" even in the heavier powder. Will some day obtain something around 100mm underfoot for these kind of days

Thanks for the positive feedback. My Traverse 78's are 78-61-69 @ 179 and my Voile Objectives are 117-84-102 @ 178.

I’m thinking of getting the objectives same size you have. How do you like using a soft boot to turn in powder and crust? How do they kick and glide? I have alico doubles but I’ve been eyeing the objectives? I appreciate the response thank you!

The Objectives are primarily a "tour for turns" ski. They are very easy to turn in soft snow with a leather boot. I've skied them with the Rossignol BCX-12 and Alfa Greenland 75 mm soft boots and the Scarpa T2 plastic boots. The skis have a very soft camber and lack a center groove, so they won't ski the flats like a cross country ski. They are very light, and that helps some for kicking along, but if your friends are skiing XC skis, you will have to work a lot harder to keep up. Check out this playlist for my thoughts on skiing the Objectives. kzread.info/head/PLSbEbRoGC_hohHa7wmv_4IYbFNC1UpHlH

Tom…what do you think of the new Alpina discovery 102…would there be much glide on flat ground?

I haven't seen one in the flesh. The only photos I've seen are from the top. I wish they also had photos of the bottom, and side profile, so we could see if it has a center groove, what percentage of the bottom is devoted to the traction pattern, its camber, tip and tail rocker. The Discovery 80 has very good glide, but I don't know how close the two skis are in design. The price is sure nice.
