Deep Purple's Ian Paice & Ian Gillan discussing a possible Perfect Strangers video in 1984
Following the release of Perfect Strangers in late 1984, Deep Purple found themselves in New York City on the promotional trail.
This interview is with Ian Paice & Ian Gillan who are quite adamant that the band wouldn't be making a rock video. It is interesting to look back at that period and how serious musicians viewed the advent of videos. The elusive documentary which was never made is still very much in their thinking.

Hahaha wouldn’t be the first time. In the late 60s Gillan and Glover were so poor they had turned wearing certain clothes 😎
84' was the year I discovered Deep Purple. I heard Highway Star and that was it. Still my favorite band. I've been into all sorts of jazz fusion stuff like Return to Forever. Nothing does it like DP. Raw Talent!

The first tape I ever bought was "Perfect Strangers," for $8.98 at Record Town at a mall in suburban Boston. Why did I buy it? Watching their MTV videos!
OK, I am listening to the interview, but my real focus is totally on Ian and how beautiful he is. I just see him and those eyes always closed/squinting when he is belting out the most amazing sounds I’ve ever heard! That voice!

Ian is SO Intelligent and well spoken. No cursing or fill in words. I really admire him both as a drummer and as a person.

All of these interviews coming up on the channel are great! Does the full length documentary footage still exist? Please release or upload it in some form! Apparently a whole documentary was finished which is where the timecoded footage on the Under The Gun promo comes from which was supposed to be aired on MTV along with a complete show filmed in Providence. In the end only Space Truckin was aired and Nobody's Home was released as a promo from that show.

@@rijir1654 That was complete guesswork on my behalf to be fair. I just know there's a clip of the band talking about the song afterwards which allegedly was part of some versions of the promo. I think it's on KZread. And I assumed it must be part of the documentary. I could be wrong.

Ian paice really never knew How to dress his hair. To this day his haircuts are horrible
Deep Purple with Ritchie “is”Deep Purple ! Without Ritchie (and Jon) is nothing more than imitation of the best years, and not quite getting it ! Gillan’s voice has gone elsewhere ! All he can do is squeeze out notes instead of singing them !
