THE BEST HARD ROCK LIVE ALBUM EVER!!! From the masters of hard rock, the best band ever, DEEP PURPLE are by far, the most wonderful live act in the world. I'm talking about music and musicians, not pyrotechnics or circus acts, this is real music played by excellent musicians, every one a talented and master of his instrument. Great guitar, outstanding keyboards, wonderful bass, extraordinary voice and spectacular drums, but also great compositions and improvication skills. This five men combo is the best of the best.

It's such a shame that Blackmore and Gillan couldn't get along with each other in the 70's.. then Blackmore couldn't get along with anyone. Quits and forms Rainbow... If Mark II could have stayed together thru the 70's.. who knows what we could have gotten.. Not to disparage Coverdale and Burn ... Burn is a GREAT album.. Stormbringer.. you could tell Blackmore wasn't interested anymore.. I was 12 and had just discovered Deep Purple when the news broke that they got back together. Perfect Strangers was a GREAT album. IMHO every song on it is a great Deep Purple song... unfortunately, after that it was all hit and miss, and Blackmore & Gillan couldn't get along with each other.. then Blackmore couldn't get along with anyone... quits and reforms Rainbow.. then quits rock music to play medevial folk songs with his wife. Deep Purple is still going tho.. Gillan, Glover, Paice, Don Airey on keyboards (Lord retired in the early 2000's.. then passed away about a decade ago).. and Steve Morse played guitar for them for almost 30 years up until recently.

This album set the course for all my future explorations in music. To this day I think classic rock from the 70's is the greatest music of all time.

So much energy and talent in Deep Purple it's unbelievable.

The call and response is improvised and it was different in every live performance. I’ve always wanted to see a vocal coach react to that song because I’m pretty sure Ian Gillan is pitch perfect in matching Ritchie’s guitar notes.

Jon Lord plays a Hammond B3 organ and the final two tracks, Lazy & Space Truckin’ show him at his improvisational best. He even throws in a bit of Oscar Peterson in Lazy.

Let's not forget the solid Roger Glover. HE is an amazing bassist.

Yes, definitely!!! Every member of DP Mark II is in a class of their own. The most epic super group ever. Live performances are the ultimate experience to behold!!!

So good. My favourite band, my favourite album. Dream Theatre loved it so much they played live doing it note for note, as well as they could.

Yep. A Hammond through a Marshall speaker. Better known as "The Beast. With a ring modulator. And the crashing sound you hear is Jon getting the front up in the air and releasing it to "smash" against the floor.

The quiet section in Space Truckin’ where it sounds like Ritchie is using a violin bow… he isn’t, he just uses the volume knob.

The "silly " part is Ritchie actually playing a small bit from the famous Swedish composer, Hugo Alfven. And that made Jon Lord very happy.

Epic reaction to an epic album! At last, we get a reaction to "Strange Kind Of Woman" off MIJ which, to me, is one of the best ever live tracks - can't think of any other band that could match it! You almost have to listen to Space Truckin' twice - once to take the track in and then again just listening to Paicey's performance all the way through it!

Hopefully, it’s okay to mention that Jon Lord and Keith Emerson were considered the top two keyboardists of the time. Emerson had a band, “The Nice”, before ELP. Their take on Bernstein’s “America” from West Side Story demonstrates much of the Hammond B3’s sound range as used later by Lord. Ring modulators and spring reverb crashes galore. All the innovations displayed on this DP album were in circulation by other top drawer acts earlier. The secret was to apply them. The music scene was incredible back in the day.

Still one of the very best live performances of all time! "Space Truckin'" just refuses to get old among my favorites!

Great reaction to this epic live album! I’ve seen Deep Purple 8-9 times, and the first three times were in the ‘80s with this same Mark II lineup. They are always amazing live, and to this day there are still three of these five members performing. Ian Gillan, Roger Glover and Ian Paice. In fact, just last Saturday I saw Glenn Hughes who was Deep Purple’s bassist for three albums in the ‘70s. He performed all Deep Purple songs, mostly from his time with the band. He still has an amazing range with his voice, even at 72! You should give a look into Glenn’s discography.

unbelievable improvisations ability never ending , 100 % creativity by those genius musicians deep- purple are the masters of rock and improvisations ,no band could do it better , i am saluting to their abilities and talents ,love your reaction , joseph Israel a fan of dp since the 70th .

Talent, skill and bit of madness... sums up Deep Purple pretty good for what they did in the 70s 🙂👍

When I was a kid in the 80's we listened to this album for the first time and were amazed. It became our favourite for a while. Funny fact... At the end of the last song :Space truckin' " there is silence after the keyboads lowers out... and then you can hear the first audience member clap... and then the rest of the crowd. They were totally hypnotized by what they just seen and heard!!! Ha ha that's what we were thinking. We always busted out laughing. Anyway...it's just a detail but it shown the impact of that great concert. Edti: The sound of that album is amazing!

My Mom used to dance to "Strange Kind Of Woman"... thankfully, she didn't realize what the lyrics were about!!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂

Gillan: Considering it's live, the quality is phenomenal. The tapes are completely undoctored ... It's disappointing to put something out on which you're ashamed of your own performance, but you have to think of what's best for the whole band. Glover: A live album should be an occasion and Made in Japan was an occasion. There's no overdubs. Everyone makes live albums and then goes in the studios and repairs the vocals and the solos and the bass and so on...but that wasn't. That was absolutely live, and I think that's the way they should be. That's what gives bootlegs their value ... they're not a studio rehashed live recording. Lord: A band on fire, I would say. It's a beautiful snapshot of the band in all its glory playing live, firing off each other, listening to each other, working it out live on stage, on the night ... A band absolutely at the top of its game. That's why I love that album. Paice: Of its ilk it’s still probably the best live rock’n’roll album ever made ... a tour de force of innovation and living on the edge and great playing with a fantastic sound.

Four straight months of touring and having begun recording Who Do We Think We Are the month before was taking its toll. According to Gillan, they were "on a treadmill" and he was "knackered." His voice is in noticeably better shape for the March 1972 concert recorded by the BBC.

@@TTTT-oc4eb he has said in interviews that his throat was sore and that he didn't sing his best on these recordings. That's why he says he's ashamed but at the same time he knew how good the recordings were as a whole and that it would benefit the band to release it.

When you said sounds like lawnmower, it was Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and most of the sound from that moment was Ritchie.

Heard this album when I was about 10. It was my uncle's album. Ian Pace inspired me to play the drums. He's an amazing drummer. The whole band is absolutely on fire. One of the greatest live albums of all time.

My favorite live album. So much cool improvisational stellar musicianship. If a musician needs to learn how to "jam" they need to listen to this album to this album!

so the people clapping after Space Truckin was to call them out again, which they did for encore three tunes they did for this 3 day stay. 1. Speed King 2. Black Night 3. Lucille the Three CD disc for all 3 concerts released in mid 90s.. a Must have! Deep Purple had been doing most of the back end of S.T. since 69 which was from Mandrake Root and Ritchie's volume control cello sound was from 71 Track Fools, a Banger Strange kinda Woman was originally called Prostitute. lol Ian Gillan also on Congas, Maracas and harmonica. John hope you get to Deep Purple In Rock album. Wowzers

Look at the front cover - no synths at this stage in Jon Lord's keyboard setup, just an overdriven Hammond Organ with a ring modulator for those gloopy, spacey sounds, and occasional well-judged rocking and crashing the organ on the floor with the reverb turned up full. For visual evidence of this see the intro to You Fool No One on the California Jam 1974 video - though by then he also had a couple of Moog synthesisers.

Saw them on the Perfect Strangers album tour. This was when they came back together with original lineup in 84. The songs Perfect Stranger and Knockin at Your Backdoor were hits. Cool reaction! This brings me back to when I learned some of these Deep Purple songs on guitar. 🤘

I heard this album for the first time in '73 (yes I'm that old LOL), & have heard it hundreds of times since. It is simply amazing, & an inspiration to all rock musicians ever since. As I know it intimately, I really enjoyed your reaction. My jaw was on the floor in '73 too. I was lucky enough to see this line up of Deep Purple live in '84, & they were just as astonishing. This version of Space Truckin is it - the best false ending and follow up!

I always liked how the japanese audience would sit there quietly and politely listen to the music... then applaud when the song is done. HUGE difference from audiences in the US and Europe!!! I mentioned in a comment on Part 1 about the deluxe edition where you get all 3 complete concerts.. there are songs that did not make it to the release.. Black Night, Speed King, Fireball, and a cover of Lucille

The "lawn mower" you referred to was actually the beginning of Ritchie Blackmores segment of Space Truckin'. the "Lawn Mower" gave way to Ritchie emulating the sound of a cello. Then there was the pause, then FULL SCALE HOLY COW HOW CAN THEY DO THAT!!!!

Deep Purple has always been a stage band, with great live performances. It's that kind of band that's better live than in the studio. And this album is a masterpiece because its sound, even recorded in 1972, is sensacional. This Mark II was the better.

Lazy - my absolute favourite Deep Purple track. The bemused look on the 'ELP' explosive opening trying to figure at the 'Louis, Louis' (da-da-da da-da da-da-da da-da) was fun as it took me an age to figure that out. The little Blackmore bit is (i think) 'Swedish Rhapsody' (Hugo Alfven). A real molding of jazz-blues-rock.

Essentially this performance is what I saw in 1972 in Detroit ! We were front row balcony and that was the first time I saw all of the technical side of rock (speakers, effects devices, monitors, etc). I went on to create a career making that equipment (mixing consoles, effects devices, speakers at JBL, TC Electronics, Soundcraft, Steinberg).. Deep Purple holds a very special spot in my heart... just an amazing bunch of musicians !

Jon used a Hammond. He also had a ring modulator unit on top of the Hammond that he worked to get the sound effects he utilized during Lazy and Space Trucking. Jon added some ARP Odyssey synths in 1973 that he would use during Space Trucking. Overall, Jon was primarily a Hammond player and the best at it.

The rock singers original triple threat of greatness. The scream. Nobody did it like these guys. Robert Plant. Ian Gillan. Roger Daltrey. That was refreshing! I haven't heard this in years. Great stuff.👍

I remember when I first heard the improvisation part in Space Trucking for the first time. My jaw literally dropped the floor. Out of this world musicianship and improvisation skills.

Yes, Jon always played a Hammond. Mentioned a couple members last video, Gillan was with DP from 70-73 (4) and 85 -89 and 91 until now.

Just happened across this. I bought this album when it came out, and I know it like the back off my hand. Was really good to see your reaction to this. As far as Spacetruckin', i always regarded it as a raging river till it goes over the cliffs. Glad you enjoyed it. I have the 3 cd version of this of every one of the 3 nights in Japan as well, this album is a compilation of the 3 nights. As for your questions, Gillan went solo for a while, did some time with Black Sabbath, and is till now with Deep Purple since the mid 80's. Blackmore formed Rainbow which you need to check out if you haven't (your channel is new to me) He came back to DP in mid 80's too as part of the MK2 reunion, and left again to become a minstrel more or less. Anyways, DP is the shit, have fun with them

Deep Purple wrote their songs about real events that were happening to them like Smoke on the Water really all the songs on Machine Head have a story behind them and Lazy is no exception. Ian Gillan got sick and was in the hospital and the manager came to see him because the band wouldn't perform with out him and he wasn't making any money so he went and saw Gillan and told him he was just being Lazy so that was the motivation behind the lyrics I think that's why Gillan waits tell about 4 minutes into the song to start singing...he was being lazy. Fantastic song I love the introduction...organ...drums...bass....guitar and just some rocking out music gets real bluesy and than the vocals just really well done piece of music.

Deep purple at their best,heard it 50 years ago and it still sounds great!

I've been listening and growing to this album for 50 years and it STILL blows my mind how insanely good they ALL are. The aliens have to listen to this for sure.

Absolute madness combined with the ultimate talent ever. Greatest live album ever - greatest album ever in fact.

You need to know that in the finally during all that chaos Blackmorenis throwing his guitar around playing it against the speakers, with his feet and rubbing it on his ass. Lord is lifting the organ and slamming it down to the floor. It’s pure madness and he opus at the same time.

Did my fair share of 'space trucking' in the 70's.

Also to note, the crescendos on the organ is Jon masterly working the swell pedal on the Hammond. Also, the passage to close up Jon's solo and at the end are Ritchie and Jon matching each other note for note (just like at the end of Ritchie's solo in Child In Time, the Lazy riff). Strange Kind of Woman was the song that got me hooked on Purple and Blackmore. The guitar-vocal duet is improvised. Space Trucking was about a 4 minute song on the album (Machine Head). This was all improvised. Ritchie is working the volume knob to get that cello effect. Purple and ELP are my 2 favorite bands. Keith and Jon the very best. (I'm a keyboardist). Also, during Space Trucking Jon throws in a bit from Holst's The Planets as does Ritchie.

You said that Ian Gillian was not with the band very long. But he came back and there's still playing. They're in there 21st studio album and just release the 50th anniversary of machinehead parrot, so they're still performing mostly in Europe. They've got a lot of other tracks you can listen to.

Rolled many a joint on that album back in the day 😂

Swedish Rhapsody No. 1, Op. 19 "Midsummer Vigil" The end section to Space Truckin' is loosely based on the solos in Mandrake Root from Deep Purple's first album and the volume swell guitar solo in Fools on Fireball Jon Lord: 1 Hammond, either through standard Lesley or ("The Beast") directly wired out the back into a Marshall stack for extra grunt.

I bought my first copy in june or july of 73 after hearing it at a friends. It was what we called heavy metal.

This is the second best live I’ve heard to date….no one can beat Frampton’s Come Alive live performance in 1975….especially his final track….Do You Feel Like I Do…..it’s incomparable….

I’ve been listening to this album since I was 14 year (1973). Space Truckin is my all time favourit. You raste your eyebrows on Lazy when Blackmore did some ”humptydumpty”. Its from Swedish Rapsody by Hugo Alfven (1872-1960) - swedish composer.

Thank you for doing this one. For 1972 this was way out there and when it first came out I was blown away and never looked back. It was never meant to be released, but they were between albums and the record company wanted something while the band was pretty much burned out. Ritchie went on to form Rainbow, another amazing success and now in later life he's doing Blackmore's Knight which is way different and acoustic, but awesome none the less.

Space Truckin…nothing to do with freight conveyance. Truckin was a term in the early 70s for just moving along…taking a walk. Ian Gillan said in an interview that the lyrics were just nonsense

With as much energy put into Space Truckin', you would that that was the end of the night. NOPE!!! After the required pause backstage listening to applause, the band reappeared and did three more songs as the encore. "Black Night" "Speed King" "Lucille" All were played with the same energy as the main show.

Strange kind of woman from the made in Japan is my favorite Deep Purple track!!

A lot of credit has to go to Ian Paice for his steady tempo and rhythm and keeping the beat going forward during the improv sections. Especially on Space Truckin'.

Ha, ha, "Lazy" from this album is the best Deep Purple ever did. It is interesting to follow how this version developed. The version on album (Machine Head, December '71) isn't something, at least not for me. Then you have it recorded live in Denmark, March '72 (you can find the video on KZread). Now they are half way there. And finally, this version (August '72). They made it just perfect, :) .

He's used Jingle Bells Running Bear little wing and Greensleeves but the original in the studio is the Most perfect
