1970. Imagine being there, as history unfolds right before your very eyes. Child In Time is a pivotal song in music history. The divide between pop-rock and Hard Rock. Right then and there. Nothing has sounded like that before, and nothing ever did afterwards. Blackmore changed all that in one guitar solo, Ian Gillan changed all that with a few screams. Now you've witnessed it. Glory be.

That's Ian Paice on the drums, one of the best (there has never been a 'best') time keepers and improvisers of them all. If you feel like reacting to more Deep Purple, try something no one else has, like 'Boodsucker' or 'Speed King'.

Deep Purple in concert 1968, 1970, 1972 I've seen. Blew eardrums out. 1972 concert had Uriah Heep open show. Uriah had people running into walls, seating trying to escape, one's on LSD had no chance. Buddy Miles was the second act mellowed the crowd. Deep Purple closed Fantastic show. San Bernardino, CA. The song fits our time, we who served overseas during "Nam. Back in the 1960s middle era. A new generation was started to separate the robot era from the 1950s. "Why" generation started said "normal"! What is normal? Why be normal. Racism, men beating women NO problem, how you look, think is the problem. Didn't like normal, sided with "FREE WILL" thinkers, Freedom fighters, doers. Here we are today.

Drum beats aren't always the same as there are many different drummers with different styles of drumming. But what many Rock drummers do follow is what is known as a 2 and 4 Rock beat. This was the definition of Rock back in the 1950s and 1960s; Music based on a straight 2 and 4 drum beat and often featuring electric guitars, bass, and vocals. Since then, the boundaries have been pushed so far that everything is open to innovation but those key components still exist throughout as that is what makes it Rock. People will tell you that Rock is defined by the guitars, it's not. It's the drums and always has been.

So get the IN ROCK album and listen from beginning until end. And remember this was 1970 when released. Then think about the fact that Roger Glover on bass and Ian Gillan on vocals had just joined the Deep Purple line up. 1st album together and the balls to have their faces on Mt Rockmore nuff said. The album shows their diversity and outright HARD ROCK GODS STATUS instantly. Although they never did get the recognition here in states. They toured relentlessly from 70-75 and were and still looked upon as true innovators of stadium rock for their monster performances and walls of Marshall amps

Apt comparison between Ian Gillan and Robert Plant. There are definitely some similarities there. Unfortunately, Robert Plant had lost the ability to hit those really high notes by 1973. The most well-known Led Zeppelin concert was filmed for the Song Remains the Same. But that was from ‘73, and if you listen to that concert you can hear Robert Plant substituting all of the super-high notes with lower ones, because he’d permanently lost the highest part of his range already. If you go back and listen to concerts from ‘71 or earlier on the other hand, you’ll hear Plant hitting all of the high notes, and sometimes even going higher live than he had in the studio versions. His tone was different then too-clearer and with a lot more power.

Picked up late on your reaction, Ritchie Blackmore was a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter. Burn was another great Deep Purple live act (different vocalist) and then there was Rainbow! Blackmore & Dio combined for some great songs... Stargazer, Gates Of Babylon, Tarot Woman, Light In The Black. I ran out of ink, or i could go on, lol

Back in the 1960's-early, mid 70's a lot of bands used organs and synthesizes. Drums were still amazing depending on who played them lol but drums from then till now at least to me are a whole different instrument. A lot more going on. Even in the mid 70's with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody drummers had a whole lot more drums to play. Bohemian Rhapsody is an AMAZING song LIVE if you haven't viewed it yet. Absolutely a MUST SEE!!!!!
