Deep-dive in a 1-GW scale green-hydrogen plant

Ғылым және технология

To develop a viable hydrogen economy, we must cooperate now to make innovations ready for the market. Recently we published the design and corresponding investment costs of a one-gigawatt green-hydrogen plant that can be operational in 2030. This design is an important step in the development of the hydrogen economy.
Related to the publications of this report, we have received a lot of sharp questions and valuable remarks. Therefore on the 16th of March from 14:30-17:00 discussed these matters with you during a webinar on the 1-GW scale green hydrogen plant. #hydrogen

Impressive! It was really helpful to understand GW scale of water electrolyzer system and how to achieve cost reduction.

The whole concept of Green Hydrogen is interesting as it has to be made by renewable power sources such as solar and wind and Hydro. So whoever builds the industrial solar panels and wind turbines and builds the thermal power plants with molten salt storage are still big winners. Traditional Nuclear power can also be used to make Green Hydrogen and is also zero emissions but the waste adds another level of cost and complexity to any project. So the kinds of Power Generation that can be used to make Green Hydrogen is very extensive with the common theme obviously zero emissions power sources. I think Green Hydrogen has a big future as long as people are realistic about what uses Green Hydrogen is suitable for. Being able to keep the cost of Green Hydrogen competitive with other comparable fuel sources so the uptake of the fuel is justified is obviously extremely important. 😎🇦🇺

Notice how the audio is handled in this presentation. It's quite loud, but it's OK, because it doesn't blast. For its purpose, it actually works well. Nice to not have to turn it way up, as in some event recordings. So when I go somewhere else it doesn't torture my ears, or my neighbors.

What an excellent presentation by a fantastic team of experts that has not held back on very informative data and learnings. I am working on a very large scale H2 plant (GW+) design (inc liquefaction) and have found this presentation absorbing and have watched it from one end to the other several times. The "pressure cooker" analogy is very applicable. To me the stack is by far the highest "new" risk component in the whole plant design, being novel but a package that is very high energy, pressurized, at temperature, full of highly explosive gas and corrosive caustic electrolyte etc. The Hazop's for these along need to be extremely thorough.

It emits greenhouse gasses, and lots of them. We're doomed.

An excellent tutorial and deep dive in the plant design. Learned a lot. It would be nice to have a debate on the design philosophy: do we foresee more centralized gree-hydrogen plants at gigawatt levels? Or de-centralized plants localized at turbine level, pv plant level, etc..rated for MWs levels should be preferred? Or maybe a combination of both, depending on application and target LCOH.

830/KW cost includes power generation cost from Renewable energy ( 31%) as per pie chart ? If Solar power is available can capital cost be reduced to 600/KW?

Hello Yogesh, the answer is no. Renewable energy generation is OPEX. Our main focus of the report was on capital costs. Hopefully this will answer your questions. Kind regards, ISPT

Why not start distributing the MW scale technology to acquire the funds to create the 3rd gen technology? For example, Starlink of SpaceX is a cashcow for SpaceX for its bigger projects. So maybe if the EU includes stakeholders like the US or Canada or even countries in the Indo Pacific, the technology can progress a lot faster.
