Deep Cranking for BASS (Is it the hardest technique to learn?)

Спорт

I'm making this video because I get more comments, questions, and requests about deep diving crankbaits. I'm hoping this video will help you better understand the mindset and the struggles of deep diving crankbaits. Hopefully after watching this you can have the confidence to go out there and catch that mega bag on a crankbait.

Big deep diving crank baits are one of the best big fish baits ever! I grew up spending the summer with my grandparents on a lake in central Michigan from the time I was 9-16 (1968-1976). There was a big fish contest on the lake and I won it every year with a Rebel Deep R. I don’t know how many tournaments and lunkers I’ve won since. I caught some of my winning catch at the 2005 Federation National Championship on a Poe’s 300 and won the last Tuesday night fruit jar I fished a couple weeks ago on an 6XD. Big fish bait! Great on tidal water too! If you have a school of fish shallow enough to fish with a crank bait and caught a bunch on a finesse technique never leave without taking a couple casts with a crank bait, you will be surprised how often you catch a monster out of a school you think you fished out!

The best deep cranking bites I’ve been on have been summer nights. It’s fun chucking and winding and then feeling them wack it.

U totally agree. In my Central Florida lakes ie.toho Kissimmee headwaters butler chain. If the rains been dumping and we actually get water movement the fish will definitely stack up in the canal entrances and exits. But as the rains slow so dies rhe crank bite. Ive seen also if alot of guys are offshore the fish will actually move away from my crankbaits. Like theyve been seeing it so often the gigs up. Winter its great because its where the fish are. Deep. Not to many techniques actually effectively work the deep effectively. Use it when its right and its unbelievable. Somedays they wont buy it

Another good one and spot on! We have a lot of non current man made lakes up here and you’re lucky if you get 2-3 good schooled up and easy deep cranking days a year, next day your lucky to find more than 2 fish together anywhere.

This is what us Texas guys need. Bite sized portions of the gigantic pie that is cranking. I fish Conroe. This time of the year it’s tough to catch a cold on Conroe much less a crank bait. Looking forward to this series Todd.

I just got back from fishing Toledobend Housen area laying on sofa resting my back after deep cranking 4 bass this morning. This is not typical for me similiar to what you said usually 1 on crank rest on a worm. All what you say i can relate to about deep cranking. My setup is a 5:1 reel with an 8 ft glass rod.

I have not bass fished out side of NE and deep cranks have been the most inconstant bait I have thrown. however some of my biggest bass and bags have been on them. in 25+ years of bass fishing I'v never had a deep crank bite last more than the day.

I use deep cranks in shallow water and along banks. Sometimes I will flip them or sidearm cast them to a target and crank them down quickly and then sweep the rod left then right then pull it upwards. It's still a crankbait, use it differently than others do and you would be shocked. My personal best came on a 6 XD in 3 feet of water. NO one was using a 6XD the way I was and it paid off. Warning, this can be extremely hard on your elbows due to water resistance.

Man, Todd, you hit this one square on the head. So many times I've tried deep cranking and catch one or maybe two, then end up going to a big worm to 'finish them off'. Then there's the odd day whera it seems they're just waiting on a deep crank. There's just nothing like it when they're slamming a deep crank. Or actually catching two on a single cast. But yep, all in all, it's just hit or miss from day to day. Sure like fighting a big one on a good crank rod though. Thanks for sharing this.

Man I watched some of your older vids and went out last weekend with one goal . Flip grass with a jig. I caught fish and some decent ones. One rod challenge really works. I learned so much. Hard to crank my local lakes with so much grass . When they are out deep they are suspending in 50ft of water in about 30ft. Cranking is by far the hardest technique to learn. Having the right equipment is also very key. Love the content and sorry for the book I wrote. Hope all is well.

Also fishing against you in the Costa's, I've always had a hard time figuring out color combos that work on different lakes and would like to get another anglers thought process on color selection for a new body of water like what favorite color do you go with to start out catching fish and how to fine tune your color selection to catch larger fish...
