Hi, I can help. Yes, paraffin wax is the appropriate wax to use. You can also use bees wax (mind you, paraffin is much more original and authentic when applying protective coats to venetian decorative finishes).

Very cool looking . Finishes like this are a bitch to repair and maintain. Even the most well care maintained house needs touch up on a regular basis as they ALL get damaged.

Why so many steps? There are other techniques which can achieve the same look with much less manual labor
