Decorating an 1820s Christmas Tree |No Talking Real Historic Recipes|

Being half German I decided to take part in this trend quickly growing popularity in the Americas - indoor Christmas trees. These are decorated with fruits and cookies, hence why they were often once called Sugar Trees. If you had children they would have also been decorated with toys which the children couldn't play with till Christmas day. These trees were usually put up only a few days before Christmas to preserve the quality of the sweets. On Christmas day the family was allowed to pick off the sweet fruits and cookies from the tree. Other common decorations were small candles, ribbons, and small paper envelopes filled with dried fruit.

PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING. The story 'Twas the Night Before Christmas was published in New York in 1823 and is the first mention of a Santa Clause with 8 reindeer. No, Queen Victoria was not the first royal to embrace Christmas trees. Queen Charlotte was. She famously threw a party for children in the year 1800 that included a massive indoor Christmas tree covered in toys and sweets. It is said that Christmas [starting in the early 1800s onwards] caught on faster in the United States than it did in England where it eventually became even more popularized by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. In the early 1800s who put up Christmas trees in the U.S. ? Christmas trees mainly existed in areas heavy with German, Dutch and French immigrants. In Pennsylvania especially some very unique Christmas traditions arose such as hanging trees upside-down from the ceiling to keep children and mice away from the sweets on the tree. I'm half German (from my dad's side) so that's my excuse! The history of Christmas is fascinating! Please do not just quickly google when the first Christmas tree came to the U.S. as it will say the 1830s. That is inaccurate and as you know true historical research goes much deeper than the first link. The 2nd link says a different date entirely so how can you know what is reliable? There are several mentions of indoor Christmas trees in Pennsylvania and New York that pre date 1825, some of which I have included at the end of this video. This includes an early image of a Christmas tree painted in Pennsylvania by a German immigrant family. While many did not put up Christmas trees at this time others did and it is them that we can thank for pushing the tradition forward into what we have today. Watch us talk about the history of Christmas in America here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4FtzcRrXamums4.html

Actually originating from pagans.. as part of the solstice celebrations, they decorated their homes with greens in anticipation of the spring to come. Evergreen trees remained green during the coldest and darkest days, so they were thought to hold special powers.

When I was in Germany, we didn't have any decorations for our tree. So I got a Christmas coloring book, colored the pictures, cut them out and hung those on the tree. We also strung popcorn and the old pop tops into a chain and used both for garland. Turned out really nice.

That is very interesting actually. I used to have family traditions, now I'm 2000 miles away from family and struggle to have my own. As a kid I was so excited about Christmas that I got in trouble every year when we decorated the tree, and I was sent to my room. Even when my mom got permission from my dad to let me out a couple hours later (after the tree was done and everyone had their hot chocolate), I would stay in the room by myself. I wish I had an opportunity to experience your Christmas festivities!

I grew up in Maine in a small town. It was very common in New England to still keep up with some of these old ways. Decorating a Christmas tree with fruit garlands or even popcorn. Candles in every window. We even had a red twig star to put on top. It's cool to see that some traditions that started hundreds of years ago are still going strong. 🙂

It is very pleasant to perceive, that quiet, domestic, cozy holidays are not alien to rude big men! And they also take part in the making of holiday decorations for the home.🤗🤗🤗🙃😄👍👍✊

Such a beautiful depiction of sweeter and gentler times, taking care of home and hearth, and loving each other. Cant wait to try stringing whole cranberries together or making gingersnaps! Thanks again for reminding us of how to find some peace and calm among all the chaos. Its all about family and home and hearth. Its not about having money and "things /toys" that make life special. Doing a fun task together is so bonding. No internet, no play station, no computers. Just love.

Thank you Justine and Ron. What a perfect tree!!!! I love the cookie cutters too . I watched you and Kandye on her channel so it is so cool to see the cutters being used in a traditional historic receipt! The tree decorating was truly heartwarming. I love the simplicity and whimsy of natural ornaments.

She is a very precious kitty. I remember when I was a kid, we would use pop corn and thread to make a garland to put around the tree.

I have a curious question for any big history buffs out there, are these the type of tree decorations and gingerbread recipes that would have been used still by the time Laura Ingalls Wilder was alive a few decades later? I love the Little House books and show, so I’m just imagining if this is the type of Christmas the Ingalls family still had 😊

I live in Williamsburg Virginia and worked for Colonial Williamsburg so we use to decorate a special tree just for the birds and animals. It was similar to this tree. We also added pine cones smeared with peanut butter and seeds. We placed it out side our kitchen window to enjoy. Thank you for keeping the old ways alive. 🎄🌲
