Everywhere I've read, including the Andrew Sandoval "bible" it states that Peter played bass on this version of this song.

It's great to hear the isolated tracks! Just one problem - you picture Chip Douglas as the bassist, but it was Peter.

This was played on AM radio when HEADQUARTERS was released, but unfortunately, it was not a single. What a shame since it could have established the Monkees, as the musical force that they were at that time (Summer 1967). It's all history now, how Mike, Peter, Micky and David fought the powers that be to be allowed to create their own music on HEADQUARTERS and the following albums. They won that battle to create great music such as this, proving that they should be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!

Thank you for continuing the deconstructions of the Monkees songs. I am enjoying each and every one of them. Looking forward to more in the future

On Mike’s isolated vocals, there’s something that I find to be very cool happening, in an organic and real way…if you listen very closely, you can just barely hear the backing track, which is caused by the “bleed” from Mike’s headphones being picked up by the mic that he’s singing into. The same thing can be heard on some of The Beach Boy’s isolated vocal tracks from the Pet Sounds album; and quite noticeable on “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, in the pause just before the bridge. Cool stuff. Thanks for posting this video! 🙏

This is one of my favorites songs by the Monkees. Always wanted to learn how to play it on the drums, and now I can. Thanks very much ! You are doing good work!! Any chance you could do a deconstruction of their song "You Told Me", especially the drums parts ? Thats another of their songs that I would love to learn. Thanks again, and keep up the good work !! 👍👍👍

My understanding is that Mickey Dolenz at one time scored the drum cadence for Los Gatos High's marching band.

Dolenz, like many beginner drummers, has a heavy right hand. This is part of what gives garage bands their reckless, grungy sound, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. But over time as a drummer gsts more experienced, he evens out use between the right and left, and the sound becomes cleaner and tighter.

In the booklet that came with the recent Headquarters boxed set, Andrew Sandoval has Peter credited as playing bass BUT also lists "Chip Douglas overdubbed bass." So both?

If I recall correctly Peter played the Dobro bass riff only on the TV version. On the Monkees deluxe box set you can hear Mike telling Pete where to slide. This HQ version seems to be just the electric bass minus the Dobro. So, I bet yes, Pete played the bass and Chip overdubbed bass fills throughout for continuity.
