Decoding Stoma Shapes

Hello GutSquad! Coming at you with an informative video about the various shapes of stomas, what they mean, and some of their causes. As I mention (ad nauseum) in this video, please consult your surgeon, ostomy nurse, and/or GI if you experience any of the problems I mentioned. They can become very serious if left untreated. Stomas naturally fluctuate in shape/size as you heal after your stoma operation, and even throughout the day with normal peristalsis. The examples shown in this video are usually the extremes of stoma changes and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Here is a link to a really helpful article on this topic if you would like more information:

Sending my love to you all!

I can’t find any info on the kind of stoma I have. I have no red button stoma. Mine is down a hole. My vascular blood supply was not able to let mine come to the surface. Oh I am 70 and have a fat tummy. My surgeon tells me things way over my head. Just wondering what it is called I call it an innie but have no clue. 4 weeks post op. Edit …. Retraction ok. I guess I should have waited to ask…. Add on again. I was so excited because I have not had the newest try bag fall off it is a convex. Well it lasted 2 days so took my shower n put on a different kind need to order and yes it always happens for me on weekends. Thank you so much for sharing it bring my anxiety down. I can’t even imagine what it is like for all you youngsters. I never had any idea this was an issue for you all. You are all so strong and brave n it makes me buck up and be brave too.

Hi Linda! I'm so glad my video could help answer some of your questions. I know how frustrating it can be to leave a doctor's appointment feeling more confused than when it started. Retractions are fairly common, and I'm really happy that you've started using a convex bag. They've absolutely saved my sanity by preventing blow-outs and leaks (especially at night, when my stoma tends to retract the most). As I've mentioned in other videos, I use SureSeal Rings by Active Lifestyle to reinforce my convex bags. They provide a water-tight barrier around the wafer that can give you some extra protection from leaks. Sending you best wishes for a leak-free week! Please let me know if you have any other questions 💜

Hi Cecily!! This my first comment but I really meant to write it days ago but I had no time after that video, I'm sorry that I can't recall which it It was full of great tips and various info which, as always is both knowledgeable and entertaining. So, First, of course, I just Love You to pieces! Your horror stories about what you've been through and the encouraging stories about how you're handling the ups and downs of what you're still going through really do mean a lot for those of us colostomates also having our own issues and learning to deal with them. You are so very inspiring and I know it's not just me that feels this way! Before saying god night, (yes, I'm a nigh owl) I would like to add a little tip of my own to perhaps yours be even better! The tip where you suggest lining the top of the toilet water with toiley paper so there's no splah back nor do have to clean your toilet every time you havr to empty. Awesome tip for sure! I only suggest that is anyone uses this trick, they can use the cheapest kind you can get! I can get pretty pricey if, like us, we use "the good stuff" for our sensitive parts, but there's no need to use that same tissue for our emptying process. I tried your idea right away and was thrilled for that solution, but shortly after we tried it with the cheap stuff and it works the same! I think it might help many of our ostomates who either don't have insurance or just want to pinch pennies like us, I have to sign off, Rob want's the light off (can you blame him?) May the Lord kep you, Zack and all your furr babies well and happy, and I'll be watching for another you tube video, a fan, a friend, and an Ostomate since 6/5/22 when my bowel ruptured at home, was rushed to the Hospital, passed out in the Ambulance and woke up the next day with Stoma to call my own! 🎉night. night, Susie

Great video as always. Some of this stuff I didn't know and it's great hearing from someone who either had it happened to them or knows someone that it has happen to. I have gained wait after surgery. I can eat things that I couldn't eat anymore and food that I had to stay way from. My cancer doctor did tell me to watch the weight because cancer does like fat. You just don't realize how much stuff you can't do because you do get very tired fast without having a colon. I don't know if it's the same for everyone. Can't wait for the next video. Good luck in your classes.

Hi Robert! Thanks so much for watching, and for your well-wishes. I completely understand your predicament. It's hard to avoid gaining weight after you've been put through any surgery, but especially bowel surgery. All sorts of healthy foods are suddenly restricted, you can't be as active, some medications can cause weight gain, ect. Also, I TOTALLY agree that losing one's colon can result in extreme fatigue. That's been my experience, too. I hope that with time and distance from your operation and cancer treatment the bowel begins to compensate for your energy needs. It can take years for the small bowel to adapt to take on the role of a colon, and it will never be as good at synthesizing B12 and other metabolism-specific vitamins. If you can, chat with your doctor about vitamin supplements. Daily vitamins like B12, D, and iron have helped my energy levels. At the very least, they may make getting out of bed a little easier. Other than that, all I can do is say: keep fighting! ❤️

@@CecilyLivingBeyondtheBag Thank you. I am taking iron and vitamin d3. I love that you comment and let us know how and what you do. Most people don't on here. Sometimes it's helps to hear from people that are going through the samething that you are. I love it. And thank you for all that you do for others.

Of course! You guys are the reason I love KZread. I'm really glad to hear that you're taking supplements. Unfortunately, they'll never quite match what we get from naturally digesting our food, but it's a good place to start. Please don't be too hard on yourself about weight gain...I know cancer causes immense pain and physical degradation. I hope that your best days are yet to come, and that your body is one day healed despite all the trauma it's been through.

Thank you for an interesting video. I was 92 when I had to ha e an osteomyelitis and I am greatful for your information . My ostomy was flush with my skin and difficult to handle I live in Sourg Africa and the the range of bases and bags is limited . I am grateful to Coloplast for the work they have done to make this problem as easy as possible and if I was in America it would be even easier. You have made me aware of things to watch out for. Unfortunately mine is placed where I can’t see to change myself which makes it even more of a challenge I sympathize with all but most with young people and then the babies and children. Most grateful to the wonderful people who continue to look for solutions for all the problems.

Hi Pat! This comment warms my heart...thank you. I'm sorry to hear that you've had to deal with a retracted/flush stoma--I know firsthand how frustrating it can be. I had no idea that Colopast was not available in South Africa. I guess I never considered that! Does your local supplier or even a brick-and-mortar medical supplies store in your town/city have any convex ostomy bags from other brands like Convatec? Although I personally think Colopast has better adhesives and a more comfortable design, Convatec does make decent bags. Look into it and let me know! I'm curious. Wishing you all the best ❤

Thank you for your reply. I am managing much better now and Colorplast is available in SA but in limited variety of “$tyles” . I am blessed with a healthy stoma so far and the bags available here from Coloplast are working the best for me. Thank you for making people with a stoma conscious of the normal and abnormal changes in a stoma. Valuable information thanks again.👏😄

Lol, so glad you liked it. I know it can be hard to monitor a stoma all the time, but the color, shape, and size can tell you a lot about how it's doing. Learning about all these conditions has been so important to me, so I wanted to share with the GutSquad what I wish I'd known earlier!

Please can you help me.. my Stoma is not a circular shape.. in kind of wierd odd shaped triangle .. I'm finding it just too hard to cut a smooth perfect fit shape to fit around it.. how close to the stoma does the hole in the wafer need to be.. can they be an uneven gap around the stoma or is it ment to be wrapped right close up to the stoma.. I'm wasting loads of bags.. I use one piece bags.. by cutting it wrong.. due to the wierd shape.. it causing me stress when I change My bag.. ty x

My mom has a like oval shape stoma and we use the barrier rings that way when there is a gap in the wafer from cutting it nothing touches her skin the barrier ring goes right up against her stoma.
