Decluttering Results - A Year Of Decluttering - Minimalism Family of 4

BEFORE & AFTER! We have been decluttering our lives for an entire year! I can't believe how much stuff we have donated and cleared out of our home. It wasn’t until 10 months into decluttering that we actually started to FEEL MINIMAL. ▶Let me help you declutter! Declutter Ebook: shannontorrens.com/declutter-...

I really struggle with others giving me things. I have even asked that people donate to one of my favorite charities instead of giving me "stuff" and they can't seem to do it. I have switched to giving them a list of things that I need to replace that I would buy for myself.

The summer of 2013 found me sitting in the garage of my too big, too expensive to maintain home that I sold the minute my child left to go off to college. I was packing up our stuff as fast as I could, and it was a nightmare. What I could not fit into my tiny rental, I paid to store. The first step I took was to call a local church, they put me in touch with someone who lost their belongings in a fire and I was able to donate so much to help out. A year later I bought a very small home for myself, no garage and only 3 tiny closets to store anything. That was 3 yrs. ago, and I am still getting rid of stuff. I am organized and I can find everything I need in an instant. Once you get hooked on decluttering your life, you will happily never be the same. I have since found neighbors who I have helped to declutter their homes as well, they had way more stuff than I ever had and they had no idea until we were halfway thru the process. Until you actually remove your items and place them in visible piles out in the open do you understand how much you store and forget about. To anyone out there struggling to start, just empty out a closet at a time, place everything on the floor and separate into like items. When you separate into like items, you can see exactly how many of an item you have. That is when you realize what you have too much of, separate piles into Keep, Donate, Sell and Throw Away.

Shari, summer of 2014 found me in a similar position, renting my house out to stay with my ex to bail him out financially (we'd been together 5 years by then so I should have known this was a Big Mistake, more fool me). Everything I owned fitted in ~70 packing boxes, that was after getting rid of 25% of my things. I left most furniture for my tenants. 64 of these boxes had to be stored in his garage for the 2 years I was there because his house was so rammed it couldn't absorb any more. They were stacked 4 x 4 x 4 high, so I know exactly how many there were, and I did need things from those so it was an angry-making struggle to get to them amongst all his other clutter in the garage, and not a way I've ever lived. It was even a struggle to do laundry and a miracle I made it to work clean and presentable every day. When my tenants gave me notice 2 years on I knew I had to move back home for the sake of my sanity (unsurprisingly, there were other issues too). As I unpacked I disposed of even more things, wondering why I'd even packed them. Some things got destroyed by mice so that was an easy, if irritating, bin decision. I'm now decluttering further as the plan is to sell my home and move in with my first ever fiancé - Mr Right finally came along, yay! We are moving things I currently don't have time to use so we can integrate them into his not-rammed space in a controlled fashion, and keep the best between any duplicates. Fwiw 70 boxes sounds like a LOT, but I was far from being a hoarder and it's really not that much compared to how much most people don't realize they have.

Last spring, I read the Life Changing Magic of Tidying and the day I finished it, I did massive purge of my closet and then continued on into the garage and cleared out a car load of stuff for donation. But after that, I kinda lost my steam until this summer. I started watching KZread videos on minimalism and decluttering and it inspired me to start again. Just since May/June, I've cleared out so much stuff from our house that I can't even believe it. I even donated that SAME play kitchen that you had in your video...my stepdaughters are teenagers now...I have NO idea why my husband and I were holding on to so many of their old toys. I can definitely tell that over the last year or so, my spending habits have definitely changed...I'm MUCH more picky than I used to be about what comes into our house. Loved seeing your journey. What a transformation!

We were able to downsize from 2000+ sqft to 1400sqft and we just bought a home with 1000sqft that i believe we will fit comfortably in. Today my 6yr old said, "our house is messy". I said ok, let's put 10min on the clock and see how much we can get done. We cleaned all the main areas in 8min! Lol. With 3 kids that are 6 or under, minimalism has helped a ton. I hope we never go back. I have been doing this for about 2 years now, so it's probably safe to say that we won't return to the maximalist lifestyle.

You have inspired me to clear out stuff that I've been keeping because of emotional connections to it. I have grandma's and great grandma's stuff. Stuff I never use or look at but I feel like I've been appointed the "keeper" of the past. I'm slowly giving it away a little at a time. I think it's something that was told to us older people, that you have to keep things and pass them down. When my parents and grand parents were going through their lives, nice things were hard to come by and they meant a lot when there were able to buy a beautiful vase, a set of silver flatware, or have a hand embroidered tablecloth and matching napkins. So I have been saying good-bye to all of that, because it won't be used by me or by you or your cousins. Someone looking for those things will find them in the local thrift store and will love to have them. It's only taken me 30+ years to accept this. It's going to take me a while to get through it all and I will do it, slowly. Keep on inspiring people. Love you, MOM

I am so happy to hear this. It isn't easy to give those things up that you have been taking care of for so long, but I think once you let them go you might feel released from being the keeper of history. I was pressured for years to be a keeper of things. I learned to put my foot down. I moved a year ago and got rid of one final item belonging to my late, great aunt who died 40 years ago. Unfortunately, when my mom and sister came for a few days, the first thing my sister said was where's auntie Mary's brass log box. I'd to explain to my mother I'd no room for it. I'd downsized. I'd given it away. I was annoyed because they didn't even want it 40 years ago. I don't want to live in the past. It doesn't exist.

We donate a lot of our books to my son's school. They have a free little library there. You could probably look up local little libraries in your area and drop off the books there. Someone had left me a comment that they donate the books to the public library. I personally tried this before and they didn't want them at my library. If all else fails I will give them to the good will because I know they will raise money with the books and I know I like to find a lot of good books at the good will or local donation store. If you know anyone with kids you could always see if they want them and they could share them with friends 😀 . I hope you are having a great day!

I've became somewhat of a minimalist almost two years ago and it really has transformed my life. I try to keep a certain number of things, like clothes, shoes, bags and even kitchen stuff. When I buy something, I ask myself do I need it or want it and when and how often will I use it. If I get new clothes, I make sure to get rid of an equivalent amount. Since I've become a minimalist I got a job in one of the biggest malls in the country and I can go into every store if I wanted to and not be tempted to buy anything since I have everything I want/need. Its pretty great feeling and my bank account thanks me. :)

love the 60 items in 60 minutes challenge. Great idea. As a mom of two and now 69 years old, IMHO children can never have too many books. Some of our most precious memories are of reading together and I am convinced my kids could read upon entering kindergarten because we read. A LOT. We also had library cards and took out a paper shopping bag of kid books every three weeks year round. My kids are in their late 30s and I still have one bookshelf in one of their bedrooms (guest room) of kids' books; some from when I was little and when they were little. We did save our absolute faves, plus about 20 Christmas books we still get out seasonally to page through and dream of the old days. Now and then I give away a few children's books to new babies or whomever. I adore children's books, esp. the classics and those by Jan Brett and Tomie de Paola. Illustrations count. When you know you aren't going to have any more kids it frees you to get rid of most of their toys as they outgrow them except for a very few precious ones like a fave Lego set or cherished doll. Those go with them after they get through college and into their own apartments. And you can get rid of all those clothes. Whew!! When kids have too many toys, 1) the toys take up more storage space, 2) kids learn not to treat their toys with care since they get strewn everywhere and get stepped on, 3) kids learn not to repair, condition, or clean up toys like bikes or baseball gloves, 3) they cannot settle down to play b/c there are too many toys to choose from and that results in frustration or flitting from one toy to another without deeper imaginative play. So about 20 basic toys that change as they grow developmentally is all they need. You can also rotate toys if they have many to keep them fresher for the kids. I also keep decluttering. Gonna go through a utility closet perhaps tomorrow. I used to use a dish drainer. But when we sold our previous house I put it away so it would be easier to keep the counters clean and empty. Now in our new home ten years later and I still don't use one. I wash up dishes after the evening meal, dry them and put everything away so the kitchen is spotless and ready for use in the morning. This works super well. Kids can be taught to do this too -- wash, dry, put away. And it means our cats do not lick dirty dishes or step on them and spread grease or stuff around the house. It keeps things more sanitary too with COVID germs around....

This is wonderful! I am moving in a week and have so much stuff everywhere... I live in an 800 sq ft, 1 bedroom apartment with my 5-year-old and am moving to a 600 sq ft apartment. When I was married with no kids, we got rid of everything except what fit inside a Hyundai Elantra to move cross-country, then settled down, had a child, bought a 3 bedroom house and filled it with stuff, got divorced, and I've been scaling back down for 3 years. What we fit into an 800 sq ft place is still jaw-dropping and makes me feel frazzled! The hardest part is letting go of self-judgmental thoughts, because I've done this before but didn't permanently change my habits. Time to do a major overhaul this week and establish habits to keep it this way!

Thank you for sharing your story! I know exactly what you mean by the habits have to change because it is really hard to stay on top of the decluttering. No matter how hard we try there are things that come into our house. I do feel like the decluttering process never really stops. I wish you luck.

This is amazing! I am in the decluttering stage as well, it is amazing how much I got rid of in one year and still have a lot. Practising minimalism definitely changed my buying habit and I am much much more conscious about how I use things as well even in cooking or baking. And it is absolutely true that the more you have the more time consuming and challenging it is to clean. It is also VERY NICE to have a clean tidy space. All that feeling of space after a decluttering session is amazing.

Awesome! I love that you shared this as a long term process. I started my journey two years and several van loads ago. Each time I get the bug. Things that I just couldn't get rid of before are zero attachment later. And I have to admit I have repurchased one or two items. I have become more mindful of everything in my life due to this lifestyle change. I am so glad I jumped on board for this one trend. My house still has many things in it that extreme minimal folks would raise eyebrows at but this, like every thing in life, is a personal journey. I figured this out early in the process due to people like you who share their journey and inspire. Thank you.

I loved this video! Thank you for sharing the progress of your home declutter! Gives me hope that all doesn't have to be done in a day, or in a week. It can get overwhelming to think that it has to be gone quickly. I work a lot and i don't have too much time to declutter, it feels as if I'm never going to get it done soon enough. My days are spent working and by the time I get home, I'm tired, and I don't feel like decluttering again. But I'm trying to every day. Seeing this video, shows me that it's ok and that progress is being made little by little, and that it does make a difference what you've done to declutter so far, and that even after you declutter, and you think you're done, you can still change things even more!😀👍👍❤️ So glad I found this video!!

Thank you for such a nice comment! Yes I too thought I was going to declutter my whole house in one day Ha Ha. The first weeks I started decluttering I didn't even document, that is when I got rid of a lot of extra stuff. After a month is when I read the KonMari book and in the book she says it could take a year! I read that and thought nope not me I will have this house done in a week, wrong again. It definitely takes a lot of time! I actually think its a good thing to take your time, by taking my time it really made me think about what I brought into my house from that point on. I hope you are having a great day!😀

Fantastic video! It is so interesting how we declutter, and then go back and do it again and realize there is even MORE that can go. It is like peeling an onion, getting down to the deepest layers. I have just begun going thru my house, again, peeling off another layer. It always amazes me how much I missed the first time. I contacted the Girl Scouts and donated yards of fleece to make blankets for kids, homeless, also material to make dog and cat blankets for animal shelters/ organisation. Senior centers can also use some items. I had heard about a suggestion that look at finding a new home for your items and having them put to good use. As far as clothes are concerned, if they are in good condition you can donate to some schools in the area, homeless shelters, domestic abuse shelters, thrift stores that benefit causes that you support.still working on it and giving myself a year due to health reasons. Biggest change for us was impulsive and unnecessary purchases. We are still working on decluttering, we started about 6 months ago and we still have way too much, but watching your video let's me know that it's a work in progress and will not happen over night. I have kids that are at all different phases (9,6,14 months) so it seems like some items I'm going to be holding on to for forever 😱

Your house looks so much better now! I am in the process of decluttering myself. Currently doing my bedroom as I want to paint and change things but decided that I wouldn't do that until everything was sorted out and decluttered. I have a spinal disability so can only do a small amount at a time but I already feel so much better knowing that behind the closet doors and drawers there is so much less stuff and what there is organised. I still have one third of my closet to down size and my dressing table, which has seven completely full drawers! My local charity shop loves me lol x

Thank you for sharing your story! Its always good to know there are others on the same journey. After a year in a half of decluttering its only now that I am starting to paint and change the decor around. I have found it much easier now that everything is decluttered. I hope you are having a great day. 😀

Thank you for showing what a long term project this is. I’m amazed at how there is always something to get rid of, and my children are grown and out of the house 🤗

It was a long project and it still is! We don't have as much to get rid of now, but I find things here and there to donate. Most homes I see have a lot of stuff that isn't necessarily junk, but its just stuff that is never used. I hope you are having a great day!

I am not a minimalist, but have spent the last year purging items we don't really enjoy or use I think of this as simplifying and my life is much easier with less household inventory to manage and clean.

Loved this video!❤Such a dramatic transformation- very inspiring!👍For me, the biggest difference since paring down is how much easier it is to keep things clean. We have hardwood floors throughout our home and we decided to remove all the area rugs. Now we have no need for a vacuum cleaner. It is much easier to sweep and mop floors, so they are getting cleaned more often.

This was GREAT to watch!! Thanks for sharing before and after footage and your commentary was great too! For me, my whole mindset has changed. I have become so mindful of what we bring in and keep and I also donate or return unwanted gifts STRAIGHT AWAY. No more keeping things out of obligation or feeling guilty or letting the children have things for ‘a little while’ if they aren’t interested. I have nine children so for us we have very little but by the time I am not having any more babies (maybe 1 more) ALL of the baby stuff will go!!!

Thank you for such a nice comment! I like what you said about returning gifts right away if you don't want them, I have struggled with that in the past. I feel bad when I say no gifts please, like I am a grinch LOL, but we just don't need anymore toys. Thank you for sharing your story. 💛

Shannon Torrens I will tell you...there is still that part of me that worries about the gifter being upset. I can almost guarantee that the gifter will be upset but she doesn’t have to live with the clutter, argument causing gifts. My children get along well and I’m not going to set them up for arguing over large, clutter causing things. This family member already doesn’t like me so I spose I just learnt to give myself a break and now bite the bullet and just return. I used to say no gifts. No one listened so now basically nothing is kept that our family doesn’t play a key role in choosing

Kafo that is always a fear of mine, I don’t want to offend Family and friends. A lot of what was decluttered wasn’t even filmed because I don’t want to hurt people the gave us certain things”in case” they saw my video😊
