Decluttering Kids' Stuff - Consolidating is Key - One Hour Better

It's time for another One Hour Better video. I'm with Jenny, working on her daughter's closet. We worked through my five step decluttering process, but spent most of our time on the first part of Step Five, which is consolidating. We put like stuff together, and this naturally reveals multiples and extras and makes it so much easier to let things go. And we did it all without making a bigger mess, so at the end of the hour, we were able to stop and be done!

When my husband and I had time to work on our messy garage, I kept repeating to myself your “one hour better” rules. And I kept me from becoming overwhelmed. I also didn’t pull everything out. Just chipped away at it and it made a huge difference. After one day we had three large bags of trash! It didn’t appear that we had any trash when we started, so that was surprising. Thank you.

How did your husband do? I'm pretty nervous about getting him involved. He will fight these amazing rules. Take it there now, he'll think I'm wasting so much time. Wiring that out I realize I can show him the rest of the house I've successfully decluttered with this system. Anyway, was your husband open to this straight away?

@@Beepbopboop19 in our case, he had a bunch of his own work stuff to go through and organize onto the new shelves he ordered, discarding things no longer needed. But with our stuff he was more than happy for me declutter things, stuff we had been saving for someday, it’s not actually going to come. So basically he worked on his stuff and I worked on our stuff. But the trash pile grew and the garage looks much better. Still needs work, but noticeably better.

My husband and I were decluttering the garage and he began on the tool cabinet which was overflowing. I looked about 20min later and it was so clean….and shockingly empty. He had tossed out anything he didn’t recognize the purpose it had. LOL! I was digging through the trash for the next 40min pulling out needed items.

Oh man, those bin shelves were lifesavers for the kids’ playroom. The idea of throwing things in a sterilite bin to sift through every time they want to play gives me hives. It just puts the kids in a state of chaos every time they dump it out.

The “sneak attack” can be traumatizing. As a youngster and teen, that’s what my mom did - and it seemed cool to come home and find my room clean. However, now I’m seventy-five years old and have fought clutter all my life - with varying amounts of success and/or motivation. Part of my pain at this age is that I don’t feel like I even learned how to clean - not just clutter! How should I mop the floor? How do I vacuum? Etc. etc. etc. You are teaching me so much and maybe I will be able to believe in myself!

My son is 17 and we recently decluttered all his school paper/mementos. I started doing it by myself but then got him involved. I was surprised by both the stuff he let go of and the stuff he kept. He definitely let go of more than I would have. And now he has kept only the stuff that is meaningful to him.

Three things that help with my young kids: First, they always love the idea of their old things going to children that need and will love their donations. Secondly, if we sell their items, they get to keep some of that money. Third, they like making space for potentially new items to fit. I do take photos of some things, and they are allowed to keep the most sentimental items (though it has to fit in a small space). These things help our family. ❤

I know it's tempting to just dump all the toys into bins, but this declutter revealed that you don't NEED two large sterilite bins, they fit fine in your current system! And I'm gonna tell you right now: putting all her toys into stacked lidded bins will be the end of her playing with them often, and the end of her cleaning them up herself. Children like visual, easy organization like the current one. Your 2 lidded bins will mean you are the one cleaning up the toys from now on.

Nice video. Jenny brought up something that is a constant struggle for me when you asked her "Where would you look for this first?" for the one bigger item. She said "Probably whatever bin I could fit it in." and that is absolutely the problem when you you have a tiny space. Consolidating is great but sometimes you have that one item that would belong in a category that doesn't fit in the space you can put all the other stuff into. It's the main reason the "Where would you look for it first" question gives me problems because where I would look changes daily depending on different factors.

A few years ago, shortly before I came across Dana's books, I was trying to figure out how to organize some things that didn't fit in our space. A comment on a blog post totally shifted my mindset. It said, if it doesn't fit, get rid of it, even if it's something you use. It gave me courage to get rid of some things that we used regularly, but could live without. And getting rid of things--even things we liked--made it so we had room for the necessities. That change of perspective has made a huge difference for us.

I remember I went on a week-long trip to Colorado and my mom redid my room when I was a teenager (probably 14 or so) I remember walking into my bedroom, which was decluttered and rearranged, sitting on the bed, and crying because I hated it. 😬

Better: the most freeing word in the English language. I have come to realize that I would probably have OCD except that I am too ADHD to be that organized. In First Grade I used to start crying if I didn’t do something perfectly. Yet most times my focus would just drift off. It was so bad that my teacher even suggested to my mom that I see a psychiatrist. (My therapist loves this story. My mother was offended. ☺️) So, here I am YEARS later finding myself muttering “Better. That’s better” and feeling so much better! I might not even need that therapist anymore. (My therapist is not going to like that story.) 😂 Dana, thanks for what you do.

My kids still at home are now 13 and 15 and I find a mix of surprise attack and working together worked best when they were young. I solely used the surprise attack method for things I KNEW they wouldn't miss but would cling to the moment I mentioned maybe moving it along. ("That barbie stuffed under my bed for the last 6 months that I forgot I had and barely played with before the cat batted her under there? SHE MUST STAY UNTIL I GRADUATE COLLEGE!!!" No. Just...no.) My 13 yo girl declutters regularly and easily on her own, she LOVES reorganizing and refreshing (a mixup at the hospital- clearly). My 15 yo boy acts like I am asking the WORLD of him when I pull out 2 sweatshirts that probably don't fit anymore and haven't been worn in a year and ask him if they should stay or go. PURE TORTURE for him. So at this point, I barely have to guide my daughter and I pretty much have to make ALL the calls for my son, who couldn't care less. Or I could accept overflowing drawers filled with mostly outgrown or worn out stuff, but I find it's better for my blood pressure if I just do a sweep now and again to clear out anything that should go. Better than a big mess, better than pulling teeth trying to get him to engage with it. I hope he'll get less annoyed by the whole thing as he ages.

The idea is you take as much as you can carry when it goes somewhere else. Sometimes that means taking a whole basket of stuff, but with this method you would put it all away right away, which saves you time from having to do it later. This method works for scatterbrains like me. I find it really discouraging to turn around from a decluttering project only to find that no, I am not done, there are piles of stuff to still put away. Usually I have to leave at that point and the piles sit in some room and I walk past them for weeks, looking for things that are in those piles.

When Your kids are very good behaviour all the time and always taking good care of their things, keeping their rooms very clean, loving their favorite things and want to make nice childhood collections of their things: books, clothes, toys, video games, clothes, DVDs and etc, then donataing is very wrong thing to do. If You have few space then storage boxes and shelves will help You out and Your kids will be very happy and thankful then, if they can keep their favourite things. What I do with sets that have lots of little pieces is keep them out of reach, so my kids have to ask for the one they want to play with. After they’re finished, they must clean it up completely and return it to me (before they can move on to any other activity - another set, watching tv, playing outside, etc.). I have found that some training time doing this (I’m talking several months to a year, depending on the age) helps them learn how to manage their things for play. It also has the added benefit of helping you (and to some extent, them, depending on their degree of awareness) understand what they actually play with versus what they don’t, so you can make mental notes for decluttering. I think you're going to really want to keep your open bins storage instead of Sterilite containers.

While I agree to get old, unwanted, too small things out of the closet because kids always need larger and larger clothes and updated toys for their age, my mom kept a few big bins for both me and my brother of toys we had as kids including a little tikes doll house and little tikes tea set with server and my daughter who is 3 now LOVES playing with them. It’s kept us from buying a lot of toys because they were made very well back then and they enjoy playing with them, and I enjoy seeing my kids play with toys I enjoyed playing with. I’m conscious of toys my kids love and intend on keeping them for their kids just as my mom did for me. There’s obvious toys like broken, chewed, not loved etc I will get rid of or sell. I don’t want the saved toys to be a burden to us or the kids in the future, and if they get to the point they have kids and don’t want them, that’s theirs to get rid of or I can save for my house for grandkids.

Ahhhhhh please NO more throwing away Lego brand bricks . Are such sought after in valuable toys people actually pay for replacement bricks that are missing from their sets they could be donated or even sold on eBay , I know you don’t agree with that concept but Lego brand toys are just so valuable and you need every piece for the set. There’s so many kids and collectors that really would appreciate those pieces that are just being thrown away right now
