I just started causally playing magic two weeks ago and this really helps me out with getting a clearer idea on what I should be doing when I start to build decks myself. Keep doing things like this!

5 years later and someone finally talks about that set those cards came in, I get asked all the time where I got those lands

the only thing I have a hard time with is finding the right amount of lands so I don't have too many or too few

Lucas Dianna this is probably an old comment but, best way I find to do it. Go through all the cards you want in a deck and add up the total cost of all your cards and then divide by 4. That's usually how much mana you will need. I had a buddy he made a black deck where every card only costs 1B and he ended up with only 14 land in his deck

Lucas DiManna my friends told me to do 10 of each color with about 2 evolving wilds type cards. this has worked well for me I tried to add 2 more swamps to my red black and I got mana flooded but it may just have been a bad shuffle.

Lucas DiManna I use 20 land cards...it has never given me a problem either. I usually draw the same everytime. it's a good balance. and then I have 40 of the rest of whatever. but i usually choose 10 of one color and 10 of the other and it about evens itself out. But but i also use a lot of low cost mana cards so I can build from the beginning. but i kinda had to figure out what worked for me. I used to use about 30 land cards and then I was stuck drawing just land.

Huzzah for Tarnished Citadel! (Actual fact: When I was entering in all of the PT Osaka decklists in 2002 into Excel behind the scenes, so that you could see them on the website, I saw the deck by Ken Ho with Tarnished Citadel and ran up to the coverage table, telling them that Ho had figured out the secret to winning the format, by getting better mana. And lo and behold, in the elimination rounds, Tarnished Citadel did indeed determine who the winner was.) Some formats really needed flexible mana, and the cost was worth it.

+Play4Fun Don't know if you already got your answer or not, but yes, you can use all 5 colors in a deck and play with it, but you need to manage your mana well enough to work. Usually in game modes like EDH (where you use 100 cards in a deck instead of +/- 60) you can use all 5 colors, since those games usually last longer and give you the opportunity to play more mana during a game. However, in a standard 60 card deck it is usually extremely difficult to play all 5 colors. If you have trouble picking a color, go to the store and pick-up an intro pack. Just choose whichever one looks most badass to you and start with that deck and it's colors.

My question is where do i go if i run into a scenario in a game and don't know how to interpret it. Is there a resource that can be used because I enjoy the game very much but I hate not playing it correctly. I'd like to be able to streamline my knowledge and understanding.

+Dillon Flatt The best way to practice with your deck is to find your local game store! It can be a little difficult at first, and a bit scary, but introduce yourself to people who seem nice, and tell them that you'd like to watch. It may be overwhelming, but see if you can join. You may not win your first time, or your second, but that's okay! Maybe these people will keep playing with you, or maybe they'll suggest how to improve your deck! Work with your deck until you're comfortable, and maybe you'll improve your deck, or maybe you'll build a new one. But you'll have a group of new friends to play with, which is much more enticing and welcoming than just theory testing by yourself. The other option is Magic Online, which means that you won't be able to use the deck you have, as you'll have to buy a deck in the online game, but you don't have to leave your house, like if you just want to burn an hour or two and don't want to drive down to the store, and you don't have to go searching for a new card you want. There's a little bit for everyone!

Dillon you can also get a second deck and play a solitaire with both hands or order one deck as your opponent and play the other deck normally and shuffled to try and beat the opponent you made

This should be renewed every few years just to keep it spicy

numberphile has an interesting video on paper rock scissors strategy...basically when you lose , play what wasn't played last...your opponent tends to play what won last round...

You've probably figured it out by now, but it just means that most or all of the creatures in the deck are one type and most of the non-creature spells synergize with that creature type. I play a demon tribal in Commander with Liliana's Contract and about 25 demons.

I like this video because I am just looking for the idea/direction I want to take with deck concept. It makes me think what kind of wizard am I and my library is my arsenal of spells so how would I combat? I want to be like Dumbledore haha. What mtg colors would he be if had to choose 2?

I will just add that I love how this game makes me feel like an actual wizard. Now I just have to think and explore how I can apply the colors to my GOAT Wizard - Merlin!

LOL I bought an intro deck at the beginning of the school year, played with it for four months, then hand-picked a fuck-ton of dragons and dragon-related spells, built myself a 115 card Modern dragon deck. Right now I'm 23-11 a few weeks into using it.

Veronica Fernandez Yeah I found that out REAL quick when I went to my first FNM. Now it's a 60 card Red/Green/Blue Dragon/Minotaur deck. Works a hell of a lot better than before^.^

Rules say that there is no max deck size assuming you can handle the cards easily. Could Shaq have a 200 card deck? His hands are huge.

The question is...what do you do with commons and uncommons? You're basically spending $100+ for few cards when you buy booster boxes. Not to count the useless mythics

It's funny how they recommend 40% lands and get I've heard that around a third will do. I'm building a white knight deck right now in which the highest converted mana cost is 4 so should 22 lands plus four "gift of estates" work?

2018-19 reboot? Tons of new game mechanics and plenty of new sets added since august of 2015, and one of these would be really helpful now. Anyone else agree?

I know it's an old comment but you can go to the magic: the gathering official site and imput your location. It will automatically search for close card store, which may host some gameplay events called Friday Night Magic where players can play each other.

Astral Cornupopia and Volt Charge work well. Staff of the Flame Magus will net a bit of life gain. Crucible of the spirit dragon is good for mana and synergises with volt charge. Crucible of flame gives dragons +3/+3. Chandra the firebrand's second ability copies a spell for -2 loyalty counters. Use it on volt charge and it's free, since you proliferate twice.

I recommend Flameblast Dragon, Moonveil Dragon, and Balefire Dragon, in addition to a few of the cheaper dragons such as dragon hatchling, dragon egg, and slumbering dragon. (slumbering dragon is another that benefits from volt charge's presence in your deck) Keep in mind that dragons tend to be expensive if you're buying them individually. If you don't have a decent number to start with already, this could be a $100+ deck to assemble, minimum, just for the actual dragon cards.

Are there MTG computer games that let me building a deck from a library of cards and test it against AI? Kinda like ygopro for yugioh but for MTG?

It's a separate "deck" that holds 15 cards in it. This "deck" contains certain outs to cards that your Main Deck/Library does not play regularly. For example: Let's say that you play regularly the card "Horribly Awry", a card that counters a creature spell with converted mana cost 4 or less; your sideboard has "Negate", a card that counters any noncreature spell, and you are playing against an opponent that plays a lot of big creatures (high cost) but plays a lot of noncreature spells to bring out said creatures. After your first duel, you "side-out" the Horribly Awrys to "side-in" the Negates, letting your deck have answers to your opponent's plays. Another example would be, if you are playing against something like a zombie deck that brings a LOT of creatures to the battlefield, you side-out the Horribly Awrys and side-in "Wrath of God", a "nuke" card that destroys all creatures in the battlefield.

Huh. I'm seeing a lot of negativity towards the intro packs in the comments and i have idea why lol. The Phytotitan Intro deck, whichever one that was, is really good, and the old Odric MAster Tactician into deck is the single most dominant deck I've faced, and besides my old Golgari deck, one of the most dominant I've used. I personally think Intro Packs are great for deckbuilding, at least they are for me. In a 60 card deck, I normally use 10 of each color land and 5 to 10 non basic lands normally. Creature/Spell %es depend on the deck imo. My blue decks normally have 10- creatures and my Red and/or Green decks have 10-15ish creatures color balance? Not an issue to me. one color with another color as support, two colors etc. plan? Never have one. I just throw together 60 cards i like and go. I just built a mono red aggro-ish deck with Fleecemane Lion, Staff of the Flame MAgus, Profane Momento, Collosus of Akros and such. soooo Toolkit? I bought one. The amount of land i got from this was amazing lol. Never used or had a Sideboard tbh, never saw a point in it. I play with what i have. so THATS what Standard is. Never knew lol. Luckily the deck i just built was all Magic 2015 lol XD. Couldn't afford any Tarkir at all lol so THATS what Limited is. I guess that's cool, never going to a tourney soooo.

I built a deck with nicol bolas double sided and I just got into a few days ago then the day after I went to fnm and everyone there was so nice they gave a ton of free cards during draft I got a nicol bolas but I didn't win a single round I focused entirely on nicol bolas and didn't cast any other creatures

Can I get sample decks at, say, Walmart. Or just at comic book stores?

There's usually whole isle for magic and Pokemon and Yugioh and stuff. It's near the check-out. But you can also go to like Game-x-Change and buy them by the card instead of in packs. I dunno if Walmart has Sample Decks, but they have pre-built decks. Hope that helped a little.

the question isn't really asking anything ...its like asking of a racecar: what should be the largest gas tank to put in the car? I think you're asking, "what's the most expensive spell you should have in a deck?"(depends on your land ratio) or maybe..."what's the highest total mana cost of an entire deck?" (irrelevant question...depends on build...which is based on necessity )

Just make a bomb ass commander deck. Commander is genuinely the best format. And a great learning tool for a beginner to start off of and build upon.

I think that the 40% of your deck being creatures is not a good rule to follow, it is the ratio that you should pick for midrange, not for controll(you need to replace most with non-creature removal and card-draw) and not for beatdown(you need to run almost entirely creatures then)

yup, control for me is 24 lands 18 creatures and 18 other. Ideally, it should be 24-24-12 but control must have fewer creatures

This is gonna be a huge mistake saying this on this channel, I ask kindly not to flame me. But I was disappointed in Magic Duels just like I was in the other games. I continue to enjoy the idea of a more casual game as opposed to MTGO, but there just isn't enough cards in those games, and most of the cards they do have are just mediocre.

+IV Production I mean it should be subtitled into the other languages in which Magic is sold? Because this is elementary information especially for new players. Wouldn't they get more new players internationally if these had subtitles (in other languages)?

I don't get why Wizards try so hard to push Intro decks as a way to enter FNM. Where I'm from, even an Armed & Dangerous Clash Pack combined deck wouldn't win any games unless by sheer luck. Needless to say an Intro Pack wouldn't even have a 10% of getting 1 win for a 3 round swiss game. Intro packs would only be good for getting new players to play with other new players, definitely not FNM's level. Even the Deckbuilder's toolkit can only make a deck that equals an Intro Pack deck.

If your local game store is too spikey, try a different play group. There's so many different ways to play. And I was telling the truth about playing with pre-constructed decks for over a year -- but my play group was full of very nice people.

+Dave Marsee I wouldn't disagree that players were extremely nice, many offering advice and cards to improve the intro pack I had. But it doesn't change the fact that the level of play is just far too different and not many LGS offer beginner's FNM (Out of 5 I've visited, only 1 had a specific FNM for beginners). After using a slightly improved Intro Pack for about 2 weeks, I jumped right into purchasing singles and Trail & Error to form a whole new deck.

In battle for zendikar draft eldrazi, specifically molten nursery, nettle drone, and kozilek's sentinel. Do this when running red black devoid.
