Deciding What Needs To Go! Yarn Decluttering

This video asks the questions to help you decide what yarn needs to go from your yarn stash. I love having a well stocked yarn stash but it's also important to do some occasional decluttering!

I need to declutter my house not my huge yarn stash. Yarn brings me joy. Even ugly yarn sometimes works up pretty. I also donate most of my items to a nursing home for residents or staff. Out of the hundreds of people, someone will like color, item and fit. So no I am not decluttering my yarn. Organizing would be a good idea but I just keep crocheting. Love all of your videos even though I don't comment often.

Thank you so my Grace! I appreciate you watching and commenting, but I totally get it, I’m not always in the mood to talk when I’m watching videos! Yarn brings me so much joy too! I’m not really finding that many in my stash that I don’t like so that’s a good thing 😃 Hope you have a great night and happy crocheting!

Hi Shannon! One thing about decluttering that I think you touched on is something I learned from Minimalist Mom - that you have to give yourself permission to let go of something sentimental if it doesn't serve you or give you joy. Obviously not keepsakes, but like you said about yarns that you just can't see yourself using but someone else might enjoy. I think your video is smart because like someone else here said - there's so much "enabling" here on YT that I think many of us are buying more than we need. Have a great one!

Thank you for adding that Sarah, I think you’re 💯 correct. There is a lot of that and it seems normal since we see it all the time. We just can’t and don’t need to keep everything. Anyway, thank you again for adding your voice to this convo ❤️

Many great points. I try to declutter every few months. I get to the point of being overwhelmed with yarns I know I’m not going to use so they go bye bye. If I could have a stash of nothing but solid or gradient yarns, I would be in Heaven!! Think that’s what I am going to do when get back home. Declutter my Stash. Thank you Shannon!

Hi Shannon, l have given away yarn before and it gave me pleasure to give it to other people who could use it. Something can be a blessing to others who maybe can't buy any yarn. I had a group of ladies who crochet at the library. I took a lot of yarn (4boxes) to help them with their projects. I don't go to the library anymore because I don't drive. I hated to give up driving but I had to because I have seizures when I am stressed.😊

Hi Shannon, Made it to the end! Most of my yarns are ones I love. There are some yarns I use for donations. I have donated the yarns to the organization I crochet for. That way I know either I will be making projects for them or someone else will use the yarn and make some items. Win, win! Thanks for your videos!

I’ve been crocheting steadily for 10 years. Buying made me feel good and whether I like the color or not I loved how the yarn felt. Going to my first ever hl clearance I purchased over 300 skeins. With no where to put it or any orders at the time. Now I give myself a monthly yarn budget. I keep an inventory log. And I shop in my stash. Great video.

Newbie here, you popped up on my feed. I have not decluttered, but need to. I'm having a garage sale in March, so some may get put out there just to get it out of the house. I love yarn but I am so slow at crocheting, that I have way more than I'll ever use. I have made a promise to myself to shop my stash only this year and I'm keeping to that. You are correct, as our skill and knowledge grows, we learn what we like and what doesn't serve us well, hence the overstock. Thanks for sharing and I'll check out some of your other videos as time permits. Have a great day!🩵

Good evening, you brought up a few very key points in my yarn celler thought process. I tend to hold on to items I really like that may or may not be available when I actually find the matching pattern. In order to keep my collection at a manageable amount, I designed a cabinet and when it gets a little full... its time to research patterns for what I have. Thank you for the excellent conversation ~take care 🧶

It sounds like you’ve got a great plan to hold yourself accountable! But it easy to hold onto things…..I think it would be harder for me to let go if I didn’t have my friend’s granddaughters to give them too. It makes it much easier since I’m so happy they are learning crochet. 😃 Thanks again for commenting, I think it’s helpful to get more suggestions in the comments because we all have different systems. I appreciate you adding yours! I’m writing this at 725AM Cental, I hope your shift is over and you get a great “night” sleep!

I inherited my mom's stash when she decided she couldn't see well enough to knit anymore. A lot of her yarn was really nice, but there is some cheaper stuff in there. I need to go through and get rid of some, because I'm finding it's easier to go the hour to the yarn store than it is to dig through all that yarn to find the right thing. I also need to figure out a better way to organize and catalog it.

I know exactly what you’re talking about.I need things easy to access in order for me to use them. I have problems in my pantry with that! It’s cool you got all your mom’s yarn but yeah. It sounds like you definitely need to get rid of the stuff you won’t ever use, so you can access the ones you want!

I live in a tiny house, and decluttering is a MUST. It gets claustrophobic in here in a hurry. I still find it difficult to part ways with some items, especially anything with sentimental value or anything with a possible future utility. I've given myself permission to keep things with sentimental value, but that means i don't have space for everything with possible future utility. So, personally, every couple months or so, I get the claustrophobic feeling in here and i make it a point to just toss anything in the trash that i haven't used in 1 year. If it hasn't been used in 1 year, it was not necessary for either summer or winter, and it wasn't otherwise useful enough to be needed and can be borrowed from a relative or neighbor or something the one time in 5 years i could possibly need that item. Same goes for yarn. After 1 year, it's gone. Sanity is worth more than money. And I don't even crack the poverty line in income, so there is a level of stress involved with throwing things away that I've purchased. Self-rules about decluttering are definitely necessary. I hope that small self-rule helps someone else out. Different people will prioritize different items, but there's only so much space.

My house isn’t super small but it’s an old 1900’s farmhouse without much for closets or storage so my house gets cluttered fast too. I think you’ve made an excellent point about the time frame of not using the item. The longer it is, I think the less chance of actually using it. For me anyway! Thank you so much for sharing!! I’m sure this will help others 😊

  • @ShannonTalksYarn

    @ShannonTalksYarn

    4 ай бұрын

Hi Jennifer! That is a great question and the answer will be different for everyone. What I would encourage you to do is focus on the yarn weight and fiber you prefer the most. Next I would suggest exploring a color palette that really speaks to you. Once you have a good handle on what you’re looking for, I’d explore some yarn websites to see what fits the bill and what normals prices are for the ones you’re interested in. Then when sales on those yarn happen, you can be ready to shop. I would also suggest setting a certain amount of money aside every month so you will be prepared. I hope this helps! Remember it should be fun so don’t let it get you stressed 😊
