Deciding to Become a Writer | Shane Everitt | TEDxYouth@Conejo

After watching a J. D. Salinger film one day in her English class, a young girl's dream of writing was born.
Shane Everitt is a junior at Newbury Park High School. She has multiple hobbies that include equestrian and journalism. She is an active member in the IB program at her school and is a participant in Associated Student Government. This year her TED x Talk, AHA
Moment is inspired by her Teen Lifestyle Blog, BLINKLY.com. She is a person who is striving for a education in broadcast journalism. Overall she is an outgoing and bubbly person. She would like to thank her Mom and Dad, for always standing by her side no matter what. Her english teachers who have exposed her to beautifully written material, Alana Bond and Vanessa Denchfield. And her sister Kylie for always being someone to look up to and inspire her. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I have always wanted to be a writer. Yet I grew up with the idea that I couldn’t, a writing degree is only reliable if you’re a teacher or a lawyer. So that’s what I did (or tried), then I became a mother, and I just focused on making money. I am now just deeply regretting never following my passion.

Darling start now, every word you write down is precious no matter how many people see it. Write beacuse it makes you feel alive, maybe write down your story, for your children and for the rest of us. That will be a start wont it?🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Shania, write! don't kill your passion. I thought it's too late for me to, but what really really helped me was reading Elizabeth Gilbert's book "The Big Magic: Creative living beyond fear" it opened my creativity and encouraged me to write, I haven't been so happy in a very long time! she also has a podcast where she talks to people in similar situations like yours, who love writing, but lost their way, or who think it's too late, or don't have time. It might be very helpful!!!

Last night I prayed to God that he would allow me to walk into my purpose. I prayed for guidance. I asked him what is he want’s me to do in life. And then that same night, I had a dream that I was a writer who just got promoted to broadcasting for a popular radio station. I have never thought about being a writer before. But I know now that my journey will start with the writing. I pray that everyone who is reading this becomes motivated to write. ❤️

I aspire to be a psychologist, emcee and freelance copywriter so...yeah. This video has made me see an eclectic idea of bringing those 3 things together: I write about my intentions, focus on psychology to show interest and insight, while preparing for the stage to assist in education with my existing degree in Marketing. I relate to this a lot. I have never known what I want to do, though I’m 16 and in my junior year of high school. I know I want to get a college degree and I always have but finishing the novel I wrote at age 11 is making me reconsider. It’s frustrating because I doubt it will ever go anywhere but I’m 152k words in and nearly done. It feels as though I need to complete it.

Hey! I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I'm also 16, a junior in high school, and have been writing since I was 10. But I wasn't writing novels, just fanfictions. Most of my novels got to nowhere, and some were only 9,000 words long when I finished, filled with so many spelling and grammar mistakes, and an incoherent story. But I loved writing, bringing worlds to life. Now, I've come to see that being a writer in this world isn't as easy as I thought it would be. So, I've been stuck in a dump since the beginning of my sophomore year. Especially since nowadays, I find it hard to update my stories due to a lack of motivation. I wanted to be an author back then, but now I'm not so sure. Anyways, I'm still searching for a lead, and I hope that you can find yours too. From a junior in HS who's a writer to another, I say finish your novel. Even if no one gets to read it, it'll be your first complete one, right? I think that's what matters the most. And who knows, maybe in a couple of years, you can edit it enough to be ready for the world to see. Good luck to you!

I'm not sure I quite understood your comment: Do you feel like you have to decide between being a writer and going to college? If so I highly advise you to go to college either way! Writing lives off experiences and exchange, which is a huge part of college. Finish you novel, leave it be a bit, revisit your work every once in a while and most importantly talk with others about your novel, let friends read it and take their comments into consideration. Let your novel grow with you. This is only your first draft and you are only starting out, so it won't be perfect YET.

Somewhat relatable; I grew up with classmates and friends where everyone thought that going to (such and such) University to become an Accountant or Family Doctor was the "most socially acceptable" thing to do. If you said become a Writer or Author, everyone would look at you like you were the craziest person in the world or near it. I've been writing ✍🏼 since my middle school days and am now in my mid/late 30s and still feel the joy of creating worlds on the page using my words. The 2 things that almost everyone mentions to improve writing: #1 Read a lot and #2 write or practice writing… I want to ask that even if i read then I usually find myself being limited to only those words that have been used in books and only sentence formation! The thing is that it's hard to think beyond those words. And even if we practice daily then how are we improving when we are just limited to only those familiar words? I get blank thinking how do I pen this situation down same as I want the reader should be able to understand the intent....

You don't need to know every single word there is it's enough if that particular word nicely captures it's meaning and adds to ur character, nobody knows everysingle word there is, but u can add more and more and write more and improve through it, don't get too fixated on trying to get the best details and narration focus on the core stuff if ur plot is 😑 but ur composition and vocabulary is epic still nobody will care, but if ur plots 😨 but ur writing 😑, the laters far better, about writing, read as much stuff on that topic and steal those epic ways they dealt with the situation, don't get too stuked on writing the most original stuff nothings original most artist get inspired by someone else and thye implement it on their book, so don't think too much about the details just get writing, as they say the ink will flood if u put it on the same place for a while just write!

I can relate to this a lot. I have literally created a whole universe in my head and have scribbled down ideas and written a few short stories within this universe. I have read about how creating a blog would ‘enhance’ I guess you could say my career as a writer. I have read countless blog posts about the steps you should take to become a writer. And a lot of it doesn’t attract me too much but I am so dead set on becoming a writer that I’m willing to do it. I think that if you really want to become a writer, you don’t HAVE to listen to the steps people tell you you should take. As simple as it sounds, if you want to be a writer, just write. Start with little poems and short stories. Then work your way up to a novella and then a novel. You have to take baby steps first and that’s all apart of the process. Becoming a writer is definitely going to be hard but it’s never ever impossible. The first thing you need to have and this doesn’t just apply to becoming a writer but just to success altogether, is you have to first believe in yourself. Don’t give up. Do you want to be a writer? Do you have stories to tell and ideas to share? Then act on them. Put them out there. Start somewhere. It’s better to do something about it rather than to hide them and dream. Hope this helped. Trust me, I’m struggling too lol.

I feel like nothing was said. So she wrote a blog post and her friends liked it and she liked the attention? Big deal.

Kind of a messy Talk tbh. She could've wrapped it up in first 3 minutes + her blog story wasn't that much of inspiration or revelation to me...

Just write and go back to it later. Thinking you need to organize your thoughts Is creating a writers block that doesn’t exist. Don’t aim for perfection just do it to express yourself.

Last Attempt! A teacher shouldn’t insult you wth! If a teacher disrespected me I would tell them what is wrong so they know what NOT to say damn.. But helping with your writing work (which can be offensive work some people) is very thoughtful of them. So if you’re talking ab that than you should be grateful and do something with it. Bc criticism is one of the most helpful things

Writing have always been my Passion but i can't come up with a brilliant ideas for something to write just like how every Successful Novelist do but I'm afraid and hesitated from the fact that I wouldn't be able to come up with an original story for me to write one day but it's my passion but it feels difficult for me to follow my passion due to lack of creativity and story ideas are my problems that prevents me to follow my passion as an aspiring writer but i have always desired to become a Novelist because it's the way how i could make myself feel Happy. Reading are my interest. I have always made a story or fairy tales and simple drawings that are made by me in order to make myself feel happy. I feel free whenever i do the things i love but sometimes i doubted if i would be able to be a successful writer just like my Favorite Writer "JKR". Jkr have always been my inspiration so that's why i wanted to become a writer because i felt my passion summons me but sometimes i felt something is about to prevent me from following my passion cause Everytime i would write a story on Wattpad, i would feel hopeless, lack self-worth started to emerged through my veins so that's why i would often stopped writing and i would often delete the story that i had written because no one would read my story so that is why i felt hopeless about my passion sometimes.

Girl don't feel down, I know it might take so long to be recognized as a novelist but the thing is keep on dreaming about your goals and just get on the path , go for it , do read a lot so that you can get a idea and model of other writers as well JUST never lose the one thing called hope, if you really wanted to do so GIRL GET UP START DOING IT!
