Decanting YOUNG Red Wine : WHY + HOW

YOUNG REDS: In this video I talk you through some of the reasons behind WHY we decant and give you some options RE what to decant in, if you haven't got a decanter yet (hint: decanters are a lovely, refined and efficient way of doing the same job that a jug will do; so a jug is an appropriate starting point).
If you've got any thoughts, suggestions or questions please share them with me - this is one of the most asked about topics and there is a myriad of answers. This is the first in a string of videos aimed at decanting wine - I will be covering white wine (yes), old wine and even Champagne. In the meantime, happy drinking!
-
The decanters I use here are:
Riedel 'O' Magnum (the biggest one)
Riedel Apple NY (the shortest, roundest one, single bottle)
Riedel Decanter (this is an older one, flat base, no longer avail?)
-
The wine I open here is:
2018 G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso, Piemonte IT

Any review you see on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel and my website (www.erinlarkin.com.au) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I.

Thanks very much! I try hard to do them in one take... it's closer to a real life conversation (where we don't get the chance to edit!). Life isn't meant to be perfect!

Great topic. One that doesn’t get talked about enough. Especially how long to decant for different vintages and wines. Looking forward to the follow ups.

Hi Erin, love all your video's. I have just been stood down due to Covid from Pipers Brooke Vineyard in Tassie. I was the Cellar Door manager. I have a small Chardonnay Vineyard that my husband and I play around in. Which as you can guess is our most favorite wine. It would be fantastic for you guys to showcase Chardonnay that is under $50. Which would you guys choose. Keep up the amazing videos 💕💕💕💕💕

Great Chardonnay under $50 is an exciting topic in Australia because there is so much available. Good idea for the video! Sorry to hear about the cellar door situation 🙈 small business and covid made for some unique challenges. Hope you’re on your feet again now!

Handy video Erin and cool set up there now . Was wondering if you were going to keep doing videos due to the imminent halliday gig . Funny enough I always thought you had to be a bit more delicate decanting but that makes more sense for older sediment bottles. I always thought funky wines like dr mayer or mollydooker carnival needed a big shake and sploshy decant but wasn't so sure about a nice well made cabernet for some reason I always slowly decant them turning the bottle and running it down the glass of the decanter for more surface area on impact . I think I'm over thinking it ?. Am guessing you'd never decant a structured young pinot (or grenache ) if you had to open it or merely just open it an hour earlier ? . Great to see some new content , well done !

It’s never a bad thing to take care of your wine, and certainly it can bruise/become shaken up. This wine is young and juicy and was fine. Old wines are a completely different beast - you must treat them with extreme care!

Decant all the things - red wine, white wine, champagne - who needs bubbles to have a good time. Good to see you're still doing these, keep on killing it.

Great video. If I double decant super young tight 2018-2019 cabernets or big tannic 2018-2019 shiraz's, will that soften, make more approachable? Or will only 3-4 bottle age have this effect? I have many 2018 which I find too young, for example the 2018 Dune Blewitt Springs Shiraz - which had success at a major wine show (I cannot recall details). Will extra decanting and vigorous airing help soften these young 'uns? Thanks in advance, regs Heath

Hi Heath, decanting them will certainly help to soften the tannins and open them up aromatically and texturally. Nothing can replace 3-4 year bottle age, but exposing them to oxygen will aid them in being more expressive, earlier. I'd be inclined to go back and forth a number of times and leave them to sit for an hour or so prior to consuming. It is absolutely preference based, but if that floats your boat, then it's the right thing to do. Let me know how you go!
