Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie Robert Marcellus 3 Performances 1969

Ойын-сауық

OK, this is a huge treat for Robert Marcellus fans. Here we have 3 separate performances. Marcellus sounds incredible and the Cleveland Orchestra gives us an electrifying performance under the baton of Pierre Boulez.
Other than the dates, I don't have a lot of info on the locations of these concerts. On my files, the location of Toledo is listed in the second performance. On the third performance I don't have anything but a date and the words "from Lani Spahr" which Google tells me is an oboist.... not sure what that's all about. I have a lot of files with "from Lani Spahr" on them so if anyone knows what that is, then let me know in the comments.
Enjoy!

don't know why but it always sounds to me like Marcellus is ready to squeek all the time but he never does...I don't know but I think those dang Moree reeds have a certain quality, at least on solos like this that seem a bit edgy and unpleasant ...I mean, I actually played in his master class back in the eighties after he went blind and at that time he was having to use vandoren reeds cuz the moree were no longer made and i thought he sounded better even though he didn't like them very much

I think you actually hit on the philosophy of Marcellus' sound. Controlled edginess which he was a master at. It's interesting that other clarinet players that cannot achieve the same smoothness going between registers that he can. That's what attracted me to his sound in the first place. Other players have a distinct signature sound in each register. Also that "edginess" allows he and Ted Johnson (2nd principal and my private teacher for 2 years) to literally cut through the entire orchestra without being obtrusive or out of balance. That quality also came across when "needle-dropping" an orchestral recording you weren't familiar with. Back then when there were much fewer recordings you could identify orchestras just by the sound of the clarinet section. Cleveland, NY Philharmonic, Philadelphia, Boston Symphony, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Vienna, Berlin etc. All had a signature sound coming from the clarinet sections. Now, not so much.

Do you know of any chamber music Marcellus recordings? His recording output seems slim compared with. for example, Wright, Drucker. Brymer, and countless others.

This piece does not flatter the clarinet tone very well. Better on cello or something.
