Debunking McLaren Value Myths - Depreciation and Buying guide

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

McLaren values have been a hot topic since the introduction of the most recent line cars. Cars depreciated extremely fast and a lot of content about Mclaren prices has been created. Yet, used car prices soared during the last years and this might have evaporated some of the Mclaren value myths. In this depreciation and buying guide we will figure out how 12C, 570S, 650S, 720S, and 675LT values developed during the pandemic.

Used sports- and supercar prices have been increasing during the last period. McLaren values, however, are notorious for their high depreciation rate. But what happened during the last few years? Did values rise with the market trend, drop, or stayed flat?
It turns out that the it depends on the model you are looking at. When compared to cars like the 911 GT3, Audi R8 V10, and Ferrari 488, McLaren values increased in line with the rest of the market. Yet, this only applies to the used cars. New Mclarens still depreciated during the last few years. Albeit it with a lower rate than before. A new 720S, for example, only lost around 10%.

Very well done. I would add one other bit of concern about McLaren's in general is the lack of a strong aftermarket supporting McLaren cars. There is virtually no aftermarket support for McLaren so if something does goes wrong, the factory/dealer is the only source for spares, etc. There really is no other source for spares, other than wrecked cars being parted out. Porsche, Ferrari, and many others have a healthy aftermarket supporting those brands. Maybe a look at that data in a future video???

Thank you for putting this together. The reliability, while real, I think is somewhat overblown. Sure, there are issues (I’ve had my own), and most are fixable under warranty. For me, the driving pleasure of these cars is unreal. I’ve been a Porsche GT fanboy/owner for years and the McLaren’s offer an incredible driving experience. Mechanically most are sound and reliable. Sure, electronic gremlins appear, and the community is readily available to help you mitigate and move on. They’re a good bunch of owners. I’ll step down off my soapbox. My point is, I think drivers are missing a diamond in the rough due to high depreciation and ‘reliability’ in the McLarens. Enjoy your ride!

I agree with you 100%. I just bought a 2016 650S and absolutely love it! Came from a Porsche 991.1 S and bo comparison. The bang for the buck is insane and in my opinion, a steal when compared to cars in its category, such as the Lamborghini Huracán and Ferrari 458.

so you're telling me the cylinderhead's valve's that crack after so many thunderings are nothing I need to worry about, or the cast connecting rods and pistons that break at low oil levels and higher mileage or a engine tune forcing greater heat and stress never meant to be there are all things I need not worry about. And the myriad of failing sensors and poor quality built connectors originally built are nothing to worry about either. Well , sir, you are just an inspiration of confident self reliability regarding all things McLaren. Wow .

The reality is the common folks who can’t afford them and and any supercars will bash them. Then there’re those who can barely afford a Porsche and think they have the best ride in the world and just being sour about those who own supercars. McLaren are like any other bespoke supercars and they do tend to have problems now and then but not serious ones. Those who have owned 911s and other brands like Ferrari etc. knows McLaren makes great supercars and enjoy them. Their engines are super reliable and there are however idiots who remap or retune their engines which causes problems.

The cars are very hit or miss. A local guy got a 765lt at launch and sold it a few weeks later due to repeated electrical issues with the car. There is also several early 720s owners who have sold their cars due to various issues. It seems like some later 12c and 2018+ 720s are mostly reliable. 650s also seems very hit or miss depending on the year and 570s have been overall solid

Low mileage is a misnomer that potential buyers of McLarens need to be careful of. A McLaren that has been used will have had most of its problems sorted and is a much better bet for reliable supercar. I've had my 720s for 2.5 years, it had 4500miles when I bought it, and it now has almost 15,000 miles, the longer I keep it and the more miles I drive it the less issues I appear to have. I would like a 675LT and out of preference I would most likely buy the highest mileage one I can find. One day perhaps, but I'm enjoying my 720 too much for now.
