    Thank you so much for making this! I try telling people that waders, especially neoprene, will float but no one listens. You have to worry more about getting warm fast rather than sinking.

    I wear waders in my kayak a lot in the spring and fall. Now wouldn’t be able to kick mine off because they are stocking feet with wading boots… interesting video.. when it warms up here up North I might try something similar.

    When you have moving water like in a river or in the surf or a strong current the waiders act like a parachute and catch the water as well as pulls you the direction of the current. There are plenty of documented cases of people drowning because of their waders getting filled.

    Would love to see this tried with loose-fitting PVC waders. How difficult would it be to swim with those full of air? How difficult with them full of water? Same principle, but the volumes are just 2x larger.

    Good Video Sean. Water temps/air temps and the rule of 120 would be more of a concern for me in my area as far as waders go. A good set of waders with a dry jacket over your upper body, a waist belt and I would guess you wouldn't get a drop of water inside your waders.

    Moving water is a huge factor wether it be waves or current. Regardless, wear the belt. I will still rock my Cabela’s neoprene waders when temperatures drop but I don’t get out when it’s frigid. One day I’ll purchase a dry suit.

  • @TheLawlessTide

    I’m actually amazed people think you’ll drown from wearing boots. I suppose if you can barely swim, the boots would make that harder but I’d say that’s just because you’re a bad swimmer. Boots should come off pretty easily though.

    Mr Lawless, That poodle is definitely your friend. He was fretting a bit. I like your direct approach to answering the questions of waders and boots in water. I grew up on western rivers in Utah. Wader belts are a must in the river environments, just due to the current. Waders will act like a parachute in that brand of current. The ocean is waaaaay different from a western river, to be sure. It was fascinating to see you put yourself through a variety of scenarios. You answered a few questions that I had been ruminating on. I am starting to learn how the Gulf and the bayous and such have their own unique challenges. Solve for the answer. Thank you for all of your content!

  • @alexanderren1097

    @alexanderren1097

    Yes and no. A wet suit primarily keeps you warm by being wet and trapping that water against your body for your body temperature to keep it warm. I’ve worn a wetsuit while kayak fishing in winter and wasn’t as warm as I’d like to have been. If you’re getting wet for sure, i.e. doing surf entry/exit at the beach then a wetsuit may be a good choice. But for most other situations it doesn’t necessarily give you an advantage

    I’m not sure if wader design has changed over the years or not, but many years ago, in the 90’s, if memory serves, we actually had a friend of our extended family die in front of his two young boys while they were out duck hunting not far from their house. He stepped out into the water to get the duck and didn’t realize there was a drop off. His sons could see him below the surface but couldn’t do anything to help him and one of the boys ran home to try to get help but was too late getting back. It was a heartbreaking situation. One boy was nine and the other was six.

    Very sad but their could have been numerous factors at work. Panic and hypothermia or two of the biggest factors in drowning, the waiters could've contributed to, no way to know.

  • @CameronMcKee

    Interesting video! It doesn’t really account for how much harder it is to swim in deep open water though especially with a current and falling way further underwater. Not saying you’re wrong or right, just that the conditions aren’t really the same

  • @TheLawlessTide

    @TheLawlessTide

    There are numerous factors that matter more than waders like swift current, hypothermia, exhaustion etc etc. I was only proving waders and boots don't make you sink. Nothing can replace a life jacket or good swimming skills.

    super irresponsible video. Your results would be much different out under three mile in heavy current with panic setting in and separation from your kayak, not to mention the possibility of hypothermia setting in quickly in the cold months. You are giving the novice non-swimmer a false sense of safety. Go ahead and hate on this post if you please, but this is a piss poor example of what will actually happen out in the real world. Stay safe, have fun

  • @TheLawlessTide

    @TheLawlessTide

    Not irresponsible it was exactly what i said it was. If you are a nonswimmer you shouldnt be on the water especially without a life preserver. This simply proved a point that waders don't make you sink. And I live in Florida, where there's a very low risk of hypothermia except during a very very short time span in the winter. You're making all sorts of leaps and inferences which I never alluded to. I thought it was gonna be a Karen that was gonna make this comment. And I said multiple times this is just a demonstration. You have to determine what safe for yourself. I suggest if you want a better video than this one make it and I will repost it.
