I'm pretty sure he's just a wolf, you can even see him while Puss runs across the rooftops in the fight against the giant (the question being: "If he COULD change form, why wouldn't he do it in that moment? a moment where Puss has a small chance of seeing him.") plus, each time Puss explains his deaths, when the black screen with the red number you can see a small artwork of the wolf in each corner

I feel like he may have gotten a little confused death didn't leave puss because he stopped being afraid he left because after mocking him for so long he showed him the respect he was due as well as showed that he finally learn to value his life after wasting eight of them. At the very end even after disarming death he admitted that he would never be able to defeat him but that he would also never stop fighting for his life. He stopped running from death he stopped trying to find easy way out like the wish but he still admitted that death was the one oponint he couldn't be at

This movie teaches so many things from appreciation of life to the value of family, it even questions if a life of been praised as a legend it’s truly a fulfilling life at the end, “was it the legend bigger than the truth?” . This movie man, best one in a long time.

The Grim Reaper is one of many personifications of Death.

Am I the only one who loved when Death whisteled? That whistle was so scary and good

But have you noticed that in the whistle scene in wich he points to puss he is wearing golden coins im his eyes? This is a greek mithology reference and river Styx's crossing. He is pointing to puss in order to indicate that he is next.

I think he uses the form as a wolf to blend in with the fairy tale animals and he knows that the wolf is portrayed as " Big,Bad" and gives fear and is a trickster like to little red riding hood and the little pigs.

It's not just some generic villain with a sad past, this is a villain who's actually right and has the better moral position compared to the protagonist. And he doesn't give a shi about convincing the mc that he's right or anything like that. Cool af.

Makes sense to why he’s a wolf out of every other animal, it’s because puss is most likely afraid of that animal the most out of all animals.

Here in Venezuela we have "El Silbón" , in English it would be like the whisperer , it's an old legend of a man who kill is father and ate his guts , but his grandfather cursed it and kill it (what a wonderful family) After that the death guy (pretty tall and skinny like some kind of Slenderman) wake up and walks for the Venezuela's villages and mountains searching for almost, anyone's whispering his song and well... Killing people (his whispering sounds pretty similar to death one's) When you heard him close , he is far , when you hear him far he is close so you would never know exactly where he is until it's too late I like to thing that they got at least a little bit inspired in this legend , and I hope that you would at least enjoy this resume HBO make a little short animated version of the history
