    That's not quite correct. When a man was sentenced to death he had to spend a minimum of 3 Sundays in the condemned cell before execution, presumably for him or her to make peace with God. So at best 21 days before execution. The process was swift and the execution took a maximum of around 15 seconds from the condemned being pinioned to he was dropped through the trap

    The death penalty should only be carried out for 100% accuracy of the guilt of the accused. Trials by jury who have to deliberate innocence or guilty because of evidence, should receive life without parole. There have been too many innocent people executed in the past because of errors in the system. A good example would be Richard Speck who murdered eight nurses but was witnessed by one nurse who survived, yet he never got the death penalty.

    @@orestes1984 The death penalty was not rationally conceived as a real deterrent. No potential murderer ever once thought or said "I better not kill because I might be executed." The anti death penalty argument that it doesn't serve as a deterrent is misleading and shows a blind prejudice. It's a smoke screen and a diversion. It's like saying that traffic fines levied to drivers don't prevent traffic scofflaw drivers from violating traffic laws.

  • @orestes1984

    @orestes1984

    @@douglas-hughes what I am saying is that this argument only works if you're thinking about a single individual. The dead can't kill, but it'll never stop the next person coming along to do it. They're not thinking they're going to get caught otherwise they wouldn't do it. Your argument is that it stops one person from ever committing a crime again which is sure, but, it doesn't work as a whole because there's nothing stopping the next person coming along to do the same thing, which means the whole concept is a failure. The same cycle is gonna repeat itself, so it's no longer a success...

  • @orestes1984

    @@douglas-hughes It's not an anti-death penalty argument that its a deterrent , the deterrent factor comes from the pro-death penalty side. Even if you accept that it stops recidivism, that's a weak argument, because you still haven't answered the point that it does not stop the next person coming along to fill their place. And also.... If you want my real position death is far too easy. You know, if you'd actually investigated what the conditions are like in a place like the Polunsky Unit then you would see that what leads up to the death is a far worse punishment.... Albeit, that doesn't answer for the Eighth Amendment violation either.... Playing devil's advocate LWOP is a worse punishment than death. If you ask a person in the position of being on death row they see it as a release.... It's called death row syndrome, death is a better release than the position they find themselves in. Sp in actuality the longer they stay on death row the more the inmate wants to die, so you're not punishing them there either. The only good answer for your views is what is called vengeance and retribution, to which I say, you're living in the stone ages if you want vengeance and that the death penalty makes murderers out of us all.

  • @douglas-hughes

    @douglas-hughes

    28 күн бұрын

    @@orestes1984 No criminal or civil penalty prevents the "next person" from committing the same crime, so your argument is illogical. Only the death penalty prevents recidivism. As for LWOP being a "worse punishment than death," you need to read the literature concerning the very large percentage of inmates who are totally at home in the "system" and cannot adapt to even very short periods of relative freedom on the "outside" without willingly reoffending. As for the "makes murderers of us all" argument, I would suggest that you may be a murderer too if you are a citizen of a country that has or is actively or by proxy supporting war or guerrilla (extrajudicial) activities.

    Capital punishment is a necessary evil. But, it is administered improperly in America, there are too many errors. The question then we must ask is who? By which criterion? What have they done? The most logical answer I can come up with is someone that proves themselves dangerous to the general public despite being incarcerated.

  • @tylerdurden3813

    @tylerdurden3813

    Capital punishment is far from necessary. The point of incarceration is to separate a harmful person from society, preventing them from continuing to harm society. Even if someone is sentenced to death in the US they often die of natural causes before their execution. So someone so dangerous, they continue to pose a threat even while incarcerated isn’t something that could be solved by capital punishment.
