Death on the Nile (1978) - Movie Review

Фильм және анимация

Today I exercise my little grey cells in an effort to break down Peter Ustinov's first turn as Agatha Christie's iconic detective, Hercule Poirot.

Ustinov is phenomenal, very personal interpretation of the role full of wit and humor. The cast is perfect around him. Love this movie as much Evil under the sun also with Ustinov my absolute favourite Poirot.

Ustinov will always be my favorite Poirot also. In fact, he's my favorite actor in ANYTHING! I don't know how he did it, but he made every character he played likeable. He even played likeable villains! The world will probably never see a man like him again.

My mother and I saw this in the movie theater when it was first released and we loved it. It is still one of my all-time favorite movies for multiple reasons, but especially for the brilliant and hilarious performance of Angela Lansbury, my favorite actress. Thank you for this review. (Though I must disagree w/you about Lois Chiles. She's a beautiful woman but a dreadful actress.) For those of you who have yet to see "Death on the Nile", I strongly suggest that you watch this version and not the remake.

Thank you for your insightful comments. I agree about David Suchet. He's THE Poirot, and the Poirot in my head. I also agree about the humor in the TV series. A beloved quote regarding vegetable marrows: " She grows to a size merely conventional and then rests on her laurels" The humor on the show, with Hastings and Miss Lemon, is wonderful. ( Back to DOTN)And I hadn't thought of it before- but the stone being pushed by an unseen person is much like a death in And Then There Were None.

Since I was sick this weekend, I marathoned through all of the Ustinov Poirot films (Nile, Evil under the sun, Appointment with death, murder in three acts, thirteen for dinner and dead man’s folly). They are all great experiences filled with great actors. Last week we watched all four of the Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple films. If you get a chance, watch ! Very humorous and FUN take on marple/Poirot.

An excellent review. It is refreshing to see someone who doesn't let their admiration of Suchet's Poirot blind them to the travesty of the later series. You highlight it perfectly in praising Ustinov. Christie wrote light, escapist fair. Turning them into dark, judgmental morality plays is flat out wrong.

Thank you very much! The earlier episodes are amazing, and I've never been sure why the tonal change was made later on. But thankfully there are a lot of great episodes from the early seasons, and then there are movies like this one, where the character is depicted in way closer to what was written. I appreciate your feedback!

So enjoyable to see one of my all time favorite Christie/Poirot films covered, along w/Lumet's "Murder on The Orient Express". The Brabourne/Goodwin producing team really excelled at these all-star elegant extravaganzas. I hope you continue w/'82's "Evil Under The Sun" and even though not as highly regarded as the Poirot's, 1980's "The Mirror Crack'd" with Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple (just 4 years before becoming Jessica Fletcher on TV's Murder, She Wrote)is also quite fun, although w/o the exotic locale atmosphere of the Ustinov/Finney Poirot's. I wish Brabourne & Goodwin had done more. Maybe Branagh will 🤞.

Thank you for the review. I saw the movie when it was first released, and still remember it with fondness. I love Ustinov in just about anything and was lucky enough to see him on the stage in London in "Romanov and Juliet." I have a great fondness for "Evil Under the Sun" also, with wonderful performances from Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg. One of the joys in that movie was seeing Ustinov's Poirot bathing in the sea. If I remember aright, he wore a very old-fashioned bathing suit, gingerly stepped into the edge of the sea, and while standing up to his shins in the water made some breast stroke motions before delicately stepping onto dry land again. Sheer delight!

I've been watching these older Poirot movies after watching the more recent one. I agree the Ustinov Poirot is likeable. I haven't watched the TV series except for the episode "Murder on the Orient Express" and thought it was too humorless, so it's interesting to know about the tonal shift in the series. After I read all the Poirot books, I will watch the series from the beginning.

The series with David Suchet is good to watch, but he veers off from the character quite a bit (which is okay since he does a good job in the role). The adaptations veer off from the source material quite a bit too, often. I enjoy seeing the shows, and enjoy Suchet, but REALLY love to watch the old films with Ustinov. It's like comfort food to me.

Great review! Love Peter Ustinov as Poirot! ( David Suchet also..and Philip Jackson as Japp!) I totally agree that the earlier Suchet's were much more enjoyable than the latter ones. But it's still Ustinov for me. Angela Lansbury is fantastic in this film also and her costumes are perfect for the character and period. Mia Farrow is truly wonderful too..as is Lois Chiles. Oh Gosh..the amazing music! So perfect for the grandeur of the locations.

I don’t think Simon MacCorkindale receives enough attention for his role. His character could be a study of temporary insanity and it’s very interesting to see his dread play out after he realizes he has unleashed a homicidal maniac in his lover/accomplice. Even if the two had escaped the caper on the Karnack, there would’ve been a lot of dark skies ahead for them.

I like this review and am glad you shared it. I admire the part where you mentioned Ustinov's Poirot being "grandfatherly". This is true, and is actually in keeping with the books and stories Christie wrote. The man, Poirot, was meant to be in his SIXTIES when we first meet him in 1917 in "The Mysterious Affair at Styles". He would have been MUCH older and wiser in THIS story, which is set some 20 years later. PSSTT--it's CAPTAIN Hastings, not Colonel Hastings!

Et alia . . . All-star cast? Oh yes! As no other. My Hercule Poirot? Only one exists really -- Ustinov's. No humorless hard edginess there, just polished erudition and sophistication loudly lacking within his immediately pre- and post-ceding would-be imitators. One single thing was seemingly lacking tho > NO STEREOPHONIC SOUND Nino Rota seems to have taken credit fully for his scoring, a part of which I think he might better not have. I'll leave the matter at-that for the moment, resisting successfully the severe temptation toward specificity. In the meantime, others might puzzle this out as to my meaning? No matter really re that seeming technical omission -- all the rest comes together and proceeds-through to perfection. Most notable is that, Agatha Christie herself described investigative character Poirot in early 1930 thusly, as according here to Wikipedia . . . "By 1930, Agatha Christie found Poirot "insufferable", and by 1960 she felt that he was a "detestable, bombastic, tiresome, egocentric little creep". CHECK! Accordingly, to this Finney (one time) and Suchet (forever-on) proved as perfection itself, utterly! Much later as compliments same-source: " Christie's daughter Rosalind Hicks observed Ustinov during a rehearsal and said, ' That's not Poirot! He isn't at all like that! ' Ustinov overheard and remarked ' He is now! ' " An excellent rejoinder of Mr. Ustinov's, to which I'd have added if having been there to "And thank GOD for it!!" and shall here for underscoring of that so obvious again -- and thank GOD for it! The Finney and Suchet additions do their jobs JUST as author Christie intended and wrote-of as above but, Mr. Ustinov created a Belgian sleuth that is far the more humanly palatable for repetition, than were his two lessers. Upon investigation we find that, (apropos for instance most all of the commentary left here?) popular votes as sampled from among the non-Christie cognoscenti (i.e. those as not yet pickled postjudicially), serve as backup pro- my assertion quite nicely.

No it is not a good movie. It is enjoyable due to the star-studded cast, the stunning scenery, Peter Ustinov's interpretation of this character. Yet, I don't think very much of Agatha Christie as a writer. The plot is totally unbelievable, the dialogues stunted. Furthermore, I don't have a particular high opinion of a sleuth when he is on a ship with 10 people and can't solve a murder until 3 additional murders are committed. At that point Hercule Poirot shouts out: "It is time for al these murders to stop!" Yeah, do you think you could arrange that, mister master detective? Until now your little grey cells haven't done very much for you.🙄 Yet, I must confess, I saw the movie at least three times.
